As parents, we try to do right by our kids. We want them to grow up to be smart and successful but, you know, in a balanced way. We want them to be confident but not cocky. We want them to be healthy but not vain over their physical abilities or appearances. Moral but not haughty, intelligent but not a smart aleck, yada yada, you get the picture.
So we parents try our best to raise our kids, but there are some things even the best parents do that turn out to be ultimately bad for our kids. Think you’re doing everything right? Think again. Here are five things that good parents do that end up messing up their kids.
Telling Them They’re Smart. Did you know that 85 percent of American parents believe it’s important to tell their kids that they’re smart? I fully admit to being in that majority. But as it turns out, labeling your child as smart may cause them to underperform. Instead, tell them that they worked hard. Psychologist Carol Dweck says, “Emphasizing effort gives a child a variable that they can control ... they come to see themselves as in control of their success. Emphasizing natural intelligence takes it out of the child’s control, and it provides no good recipe for responding to a failure.”Keeping Them Happy. Of course we want our kids to be happy in general, but that doesn’t mean they won’t go through bouts of disappointment or get an occasional case of the sads. It’s more important to let them know that feelings are just feelings -- it’s how we respond to them that matters.Rescuing Them. How else are kids supposed to learn that there are natural consequences for their actions (or lack thereof) if we parents are always coming in and rescuing them? So if they fail a class, don’t try to cajole the teacher into letting them do some easy extra credit; let them retake it. Nothing like a little summer school to motivate kids to apply themselves during the school year.Making Excuses. Similarly, we’d do our kids a great favor by not making excuses for them. If they didn’t write a thank-you note to your aunt for their birthday gift, it isn’t because they were too busy, it’s because they didn’t do it. Now if they did do it, and you forgot to put it in the mail, then that’s your mistake to own. Not that that has ever happened around here ...Putting Them First. Your little sweeties may be your precious darlings, but really, they’re just kids that will someday be grown up people. Let’s please stop with this entitlement attitude? No, your needs do not trump everyone else’s by virtue of your existence. Take a number. Are you “guilty” of any of these parenting sins?

If 40 is the new 30, and 30 is the new 20, does that make 20-year-olds 10? Maybe, if you buy into the updated guidelines being given to child psychologists. The BBC reports that
Here on The Stir, I talk often about health and fitness. I've told you all about
1. You need to make smaller goals. If you don't, your ultimate goal will feel unobtainable. Like I mentioned, I dropped 70 pounds. That's a lot to visualize when you're still walking around carrying that weight. I made an effort to set smaller goals for myself, and reward myself when I obtained them. When I lost a chunk of my weight, I was on Weight Watchers, and I made sure that every time I hit a body weight percentage milestone, I rewarded myself with a manicure and pedicure.
You can read every article in every bridal magazine, every Q&A or checklist on wedding websites, and pick your married friends brains for MONTHS and still be unprepared for some of the "OMG" (both wonderful and cringe-worthy) moments you're bound to encounter wedding planning and finally walking down the aisle. That's why just about anyone who has ever been a bride has coulda/shoulda/woulda thoughts well after they've someone's Mrs.

There are two certainties in this life, goes the saying: Death and taxes. What if you could cheat one of them? Sure, we'd all love to put our money in our own pockets instead of the government's. But, given a choice, I'm betting most people would choose to change the second of these certainties by
Lunch is a tricky meal. Most of us eat it frantically, either over our desks or on the go throughout our day. At breakfast we can often eat at a more leisurely pace. At dinner we have time to have fun and explore different recipes to be shared with the whole family.
My wife is expecting twin boys (we've dubbed them Hans and Frans for now) and the news kind of rocked our world, given we already have two kids. We were trying for more but weren’t looking to double down, exactly. Of course we’re excited to be expanding our family, but impending multiples has forced me to admit and rethink certain pre-conceived notions I held about the multi-zygotic subset of our species. Such as:People expecting twins inspire pity. Whenever someone tells you they’re expecting twins, especially if you’re a father yourself, your first thought before congratulating them is always, “Wow. You’re screwed.”Identicals are creepy. Two (or more) people who look and act like each other makes humanity feel like something you can run off at Kinko’s.There are too many twins in the world. Twins used to seem kind of cool and unique, like iPhones. Now they seem ubiquitous and hackneyed, like iPhones. It’s us against them. When you’re expecting a single baby, it feels like you’re waiting for a special invited guest. When you’re expecting twins, it feels like you’re preparing for a rock band that’s planning on staying at your house.Everyone assumes it was IVF. Which makes some people look at you like, “Had to cheat, huh?”Rhyme-y or sound-alike twin names are annoying. Oh, it’s Jayden and Jacob? Lucy and Lacy? Brian and Brianna? Why don’t you just go ahead and name them Thing 1 and Thing 2?Dressing twins the same is cruel. Nothing quite says “If we lose one we have a spare” like matching outfits.
The other day I made an offhand remark to a friend about something my soon-to-be-ex-husband had done that I found irritating, to put it mildly. Then I realized that my kiddos were right there with me, and overheard my gah I can’t believe he did that(!) comment.
Every month, I cringe a bit when I see the funds coming out of our account that automatically go into our children's college savings funds. It's not much when you look at the soaring price of higher education, but it feels like a lot when there are so many other things to pay for in our daily lives, and things I would much rather spend money on than their college education.
Do you feed your child homemade baby food or store-bought baby food? The answer could say a lot about what kind of parent you are! Just kidding -- we're not going there today. I fed my baby homemade, but mostly out of laziness. It was just easier to mash up whatever was already on our plates (within reason) and feed that to our son. But in case you're looking for an excuse to buy that expensive Babycook, science is on your side. There are some significant reasons
Now that the
Despite the rumors running rampant the past few days, saying Lamar Odom was missing and likely on some sort of drug bender,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALEXANDER SKARSGARD! That's right: Alexander Skarsgard was born on August 25 in 1976 -- which makes him 37 years old today! If only ASkars were here right now, I'd stick a candle in a piece of apple cake from IKEA and dance around wearing clogs! (That's what they do in Sweden on people's birthdays, right? Maybe not the clogs part. Where do people wear clogs again? Holland??)
When I was a kid, my mom used to have to constantly nag me to clean my room. I was an epically lazy packrat and had a tendency to simply shove random objects under my bed instead of actually putting anything away. I suppose it's only fitting that I am now the parent of the most clutter-prone child on the planet, and I battle with him daily about his "complete pigsty" (oh look, my own mother's words coming right out of my mouth!) of a bedroom.

When you're going to a sporting event with a child, be it a professional one or that of an older sibling's, you best come prepared. In case you hadn't noticed, kids don't have the same attention spans we do, and sitting outside can get boring or uncomfortable real fast when you're a small fry.
I wasn't going to co-sleep with my baby. I thought it was weird and barbaric. But then my anthropologist friends talked me into it. (Yes, of course, it's always the anthropologists.) They went over all the reasons why it makes perfect sense, from the security it gives your infant to the way it bonds the whole family together. And then, when my son was born, I couldn't stand to be parted from him anyway. Co-sleeping just made sense to me.
The first two times I was pregnant, people were generally pretty polite and nice to me. Sure, I had the occasional tummy rub from a stranger and a couple of questioning looks when I looked more chunky than preggo in the early months, but mostly people were gracious, sweet, and congratulatory.
Right now, I only have one child, but from what I hear, there are a wide variety of emotions that come into play before baby #2 makes his or her debut. And I can only imagine. When I think about having another child, I look at my daughter and think, "Gosh, how could I possibly love someone else this much? My heart is filled to the brim!" Okay, that's a little cheesy, but that's the honest to god general sentiment. Then I think about adding the hormones from pregnancy into the mix, and oof. The whole thing seems so ... emotional. But I'd like to have another baby someday. Maybe even two. But I, like all moms, want to be sure to soak up every minute with my "big girl" before the next baby makes their grand entrance.
If you're looking to spice up your sex life, you don't need to spend lots of money on fancy sex toys or special lubes. I mean I'm all for it, of course, but if you can save your pennies and use stuff you've already got around the house, why not?
