5 Things Good Parents Do to Mess Up Their Kids

As parents, we try to do right by our kids. We want them to grow up to be smart and successful but, you know, in a balanced way. We want them to be confident but not cocky. We want them to be healthy but not vain over their physical abilities or appearances. Moral but not haughty, intelligent but not a smart aleck, yada yada, you get the picture.

So we parents try our best to raise our kids, but there are some things even the best parents do that turn out to be ultimately bad for our kids. Think you’re doing everything right? Think again. Here are five things that good parents do that end up messing up their kids.

Telling Them They’re Smart. Did you know that 85 percent of American parents believe it’s important to tell their kids that they’re smart? I fully admit to being in that majority. But as it turns out, labeling your child as smart may cause them to underperform. Instead, tell them that they worked hard. Psychologist Carol Dweck says, “Emphasizing effort gives a child a variable that they can control ... they come to see themselves as in control of their success. Emphasizing natural intelligence takes it out of the child’s control, and it provides no good recipe for responding to a failure.”Keeping Them Happy. Of course we want our kids to be happy in general, but that doesn’t mean they won’t go through bouts of disappointment or get an occasional case of the sads. It’s more important to let them know that feelings are just feelings -- it’s how we respond to them that matters.Rescuing Them. How else are kids supposed to learn that there are natural consequences for their actions (or lack thereof) if we parents are always coming in and rescuing them? So if they fail a class, don’t try to cajole the teacher into letting them do some easy extra credit; let them retake it. Nothing like a little summer school to motivate kids to apply themselves during the school year.Making Excuses. Similarly, we’d do our kids a great favor by not making excuses for them. If they didn’t write a thank-you note to your aunt for their birthday gift, it isn’t because they were too busy, it’s because they didn’t do it. Now if they did do it, and you forgot to put it in the mail, then that’s your mistake to own. Not that that has ever happened around here ...Putting Them First. Your little sweeties may be your precious darlings, but really, they’re just kids that will someday be grown up people. Let’s please stop with this entitlement attitude? No, your needs do not trump everyone else’s by virtue of your existence. Take a number.

Are you “guilty” of any of these parenting sins?

Dylan PennNow that we know who Robert Pattinson’s latest rumored girlfriend is, I think it’s time we got to know her a little. Don’t you think? Pull up a chair. Let us dish on the lovely Dylan Penn. We already know she’s the daughter of Robin Wright and Sean Penn. Lucky for her she seems to take after her mother more than her dad. But what else does she have going on? We scrape the bowels of the Internet to find out.

1. Dylan is 22 years old.

2. She’s a model. Dylan is working with DT Model Management, which also represents Paris Hilton. Google image Dylan Penn and you'll see some of her work.

3. Dylan is 5'7" and has green eyes. Rob looks tiny on film (is it just me?) but he's actually 6'1", so it looks like they're a pretty good height match. Kristen Stewart is 5'5". Alas, 5'7" is a bit short for a model, even nowadays.

4. Dylan has a brother named Hopper. He got into hot water earlier this year for lashing out at the paparazzi.

5. Here's Dylan Penn as a baby. Daww.

And that’s about all we could find so far. With parents as colorful as Dylan has, you’d think she might have a spunky personality, too. I mean, Robin seems pretty cool, but man, Sean Penn has quite the outsized personality. We hope she’s got more going on than what we know so far -- she’ll need it if she wants to keep Rob’s interest! Of course, now that we know who Dylan is, I bet we’re going to see Rob with yet another new girl. How much you want to bet it’ll be someone else next week? Oh well, sucks to be Pattinson.

Do you think Dylan will stick around, or is this just another fling for Rob?

7 Things Young Adults Shouldn't Do if Adolescence Lasts to 25

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
by Jenny Erikson 1 hour ago

If 40 is the new 30, and 30 is the new 20, does that make 20-year-olds 10? Maybe, if you buy into the updated guidelines being given to child psychologists. The BBC reports that adolescence no longer ends when people turn 18, but rather when they turn 25.

Yup, apparently there are now three stages of adolescence: Early adolescence ranges from 12 to 14 years, middle adolescence from 15 to 17 years, and 18 and over is classed as late adolescence. I’m sure we’ve all known someone in his or her 20s that refused to act like a responsible adult, but come on. Let’s not excuse immaturity on “developing brain patterns.” One would hope that our brains continue to grow and mature throughout the years, and just because a 20-year-old might not be as wise as a 40-year-old doesn’t make them a child.

But if this is really going to be a thing, and these legal “adults” want to be classified as children to avoid grown-up responsibilities, then there are some privileges they should just have to do without.

Drinking. This one is sort of self-explanatory. Adult beverages are for adults only.Driving. If a 25-year-old is still an adolescent, then a 16-year-old is practically a toddler. Hand over the keys until you’re mature enough to be trusted with heavy machinery, please.Credit Cards. It’s not free money, kids. You’re going to have to pay that all back someday. With interest.College. Do you really think children are responsible enough to choose a major and a career goal that will benefit them in the long run? Nope, let’s only let older people pursue higher education -- after they’ve learned a little about life.Voting. Children lack logical reasoning. They don’t get to pick our leaders.Tattoos. I know forever seems like the time it takes for spring break to get here when you’re 19, but tattoos are forever, and a dancing demon on your hiney isn’t going to seem like the best idea in a couple of decades.Sex. Think of how many STDs and abortions we could stop if there were a way to stop people from having sex until they were fully cognitive adults. Not to mention all the hurt feelings that could be prevented by young people getting too close too soon and getting their hearts broken.

Or you know, we can accept the fact that young adults may still be figuring out how to make a space for themselves on the planet, but they are adults and subject to all the responsibilities and privileges that come with it.

When do you think adolescence ends?

5 Things All Women Need to Know Before Going on a Diet

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
by Emily Abbate 2 hours ago

bathroom scaleHere on The Stir, I talk often about health and fitness. I've told you all about my 70-pound weight loss and got personal when I put some of the weight back on a few months back. I've dished about my running tips for newbies and have tackled some wacky workouts (stilettos, anyone?). With that said, I have a soft spot for people who ask me for workout and diet advice. Not because I'm some registered dietitian (I'm not), but because I've been there.

Yesterday I was talking with a friend who told me she's just starting a weight loss journey of her own, and it made me nostalgic. I remember feeling trapped in my own overweight body. I remember how jealous I was that so many of my friends swapped clothes while I was stuck in my size 16 jeans. I remember how HARD it was to skip over French fries (FYI: that doesn't get easier after weight loss).

With all this said, I had some advice for her. Thus I present you with the 5 things I wish someone told me before I began my weight loss journey.

Weight_Loss_Tips1. You need to make smaller goals. If you don't, your ultimate goal will feel unobtainable. Like I mentioned, I dropped 70 pounds. That's a lot to visualize when you're still walking around carrying that weight. I made an effort to set smaller goals for myself, and reward myself when I obtained them. When I lost a chunk of my weight, I was on Weight Watchers, and I made sure that every time I hit a body weight percentage milestone, I rewarded myself with a manicure and pedicure.

2. There are leggings that prevent that chaffing thing down there: How I never knew these existed until AFTER I trained for my first two half marathons astounds me. Buy yourself a pair of GREAT workout pants. Screw it, buy three pairs. If you need suggestions, you can look at our workout bottom roundup.

3. If you cut things out entirely, you'll regret it: I guess some people can do this. I could not, and that's why Weight Watchers worked so well for me. I needed to be able to have that occasional piece of chocolate, that latte on a cold winter afternoon. Those sweet indulgences every once in a while made me feel normal, they made me happy, and they didn't stop my progress.

4. Exercise doesn't have to suck: I used to go to the gym back in college and dread that 45-minute chunk of time on the elliptical. I was convinced, though, that if I didn't do it, I wouldn't lose weight. Newsflash: there are a bazillion different ways to get active. Don't waste your time doing one that makes you unhappy. My best tip? Try getting in the pool if high-intensity workouts hurt your joints to reduce tension. It's a good way to ease in to being active for someone who hasn't exactly been a star athlete.

More from The Stir: 12 Sports Bras Face Our Intense Test: Which Ones Beat the Bounce? (PHOTOS)

5. Just because you're dieting doesn't mean you have to put your social life on pause: I get it. Going out with your friends is a massive temptation, and if you're dieting, you're probably worried about overeating or drinking too much. Just because you want to lose weight doesn't mean that you have to hide tucked away in your room, though. Be easy on yourself. If you're someone who feels awkward without a drink in your hand at a bar or dinner party, grab a seltzer. Want it to look like an alcoholic drink? Throw in a splash of cranberry juice or a lime. Socialize, have fun, and don't let your weight loss stop you from living your life.

Do you have any tips for someone starting a long-term diet?

Simple Things You Can Do to Stop Aging -- For Real

There are two certainties in this life, goes the saying: Death and taxes. What if you could cheat one of them? Sure, we'd all love to put our money in our own pockets instead of the government's. But, given a choice, I'm betting most people would choose to change the second of these certainties by stopping the aging process. And I don't mean by injecting your face with fillers or sleeping in a cryotherapy chamber. I mean by doing simple things that we all can do, enjoyable things, that reportedly stop the aging process. I'm beginning to sound like an infomercial, but this is science.

The Lancet Journal, a medical journal, reports on a study it conducted with men who had prostate cancer. One group of men were allowed to continue on about their lives. The other was given a complete lifestyle overhaul: A plant-based (i.e., vegetarian) diet. Stress-reducing techniques like meditation and yoga. A moderate exercise plan. And weekly group meetings for social support.

It makes sense that the second group would probably end up healthier and looking and feeling better. But something extraordinary occurred at the molecular level.

The men actually stopped aging! Sorta.

See, the core part of aging is all about cellular turnover. Each time the cells in our body divide, something called the telomeres get shorter and shorter. Shorter telomeres mean more signs of aging: Sickness, cancers, vulnerability to infections, dementia, etc.

But with moderate exercise, stress reduction techniques, and a plant-based diet and social support, the telomeres did something incredible: They got LONGER!

No one is actually certain how this happened, but it happened. The lifestyle changes weren't meant to affect the men's prostate cancer and apparently they didn't.

But in the first group, the telomeres shortened by 3 percent; the second group saw their telomeres lengthen by 10 percent! So maybe this is why yoga fanatics like Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Rinna, Madonna, and Sting don't seem to age!

Naturally, it's too soon to tell whether these guys with the longer telomeres will live longer. But even if they don't, longer telomeres increase their chances of living much healthier.

All of this brings up the question as to whether we'd all WANT to live forever. Surely, the alternative is scary. But living forever would be kind of boring, wouldn't it?

Would you want to live forever?

6 Things Your Lunch Choices Could Be Saying About You (PHOTOS)

lunchLunch is a tricky meal. Most of us eat it frantically, either over our desks or on the go throughout our day. At breakfast we can often eat at a more leisurely pace. At dinner we have time to have fun and explore different recipes to be shared with the whole family.

But this doesn't mean our lunch has to be joyless! In fact, our lunch can provide a pretty interesting window into our personalities. Read on to find out what your lunch says about you!

Are you super-organized? Maybe you're a health-conscious luncher. I bet there's a fair number of you who don't remember to eat lunch at all! We've put together a slideshow of 5 common types of lunches. See if your next midday meal is revealing something surprising about you.

Your motto: A place for everything, and everything in its place. Not only are you more likely to prep your lunch the night before work, but you probably race to get the empty containers into the wash when you get home. Frugal, thoughtful, and meticulous -- you are organized above all else. You probably always have a stain stick, Tylenol, and Band-Aids on hand. You're a good luncher to know, my friend!

7 Things People Really Think About Twins

Penulis : Unknown on zaterdag 14 september 2013 | 18:38

by Brian Farnham 21 hours ago twinsMy wife is expecting twin boys (we've dubbed them Hans and Frans for now) and the news kind of rocked our world, given we already have two kids. We were trying for more but weren’t looking to double down, exactly.

Of course we’re excited to be expanding our family, but impending multiples has forced me to admit and rethink certain pre-conceived notions I held about the multi-zygotic subset of our species. Such as:

People expecting twins inspire pity. Whenever someone tells you they’re expecting twins, especially if you’re a father yourself, your first thought before congratulating them is always, “Wow. You’re screwed.”Identicals are creepy. Two (or more) people who look and act like each other makes humanity feel like something you can run off at Kinko’s.There are too many twins in the world. Twins used to seem kind of cool and unique, like iPhones. Now they seem ubiquitous and hackneyed, like iPhones. It’s us against them. When you’re expecting a single baby, it feels like you’re waiting for a special invited guest. When you’re expecting twins, it feels like you’re preparing for a rock band that’s planning on staying at your house.Everyone assumes it was IVF. Which makes some people look at you like, “Had to cheat, huh?”Rhyme-y or sound-alike twin names are annoying. Oh, it’s Jayden and Jacob? Lucy and Lacy? Brian and Brianna? Why don’t you just go ahead and name them Thing 1 and Thing 2?Dressing twins the same is cruel. Nothing quite says “If we lose one we have a spare” like matching outfits.

3 Things to Tell Your Kids When You're Getting Divorced

Penulis : Unknown on donderdag 12 september 2013 | 01:17

donderdag 12 september 2013

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

The other day I made an offhand remark to a friend about something my soon-to-be-ex-husband had done that I found irritating, to put it mildly. Then I realized that my kiddos were right there with me, and overheard my gah I can’t believe he did that(!) comment.

I paused my conversation and launched into my go-to speech whenever something negative comes up about their dad or anything about our impending divorce. “Girls, this divorce is not your fault ...” I didn’t have a chance to finish as both my daughters rolled their eyes and interrupted, “... and you and Daddy both love us very much.”

Divorce with kids is rough, man, and trying to decide what to tell them, how much to tell them, when to tell them, etc., is no easy decision. Everyone has an opinion, and make no mistake, you will be judged for whatever you decide to do. Because of course you didn’t stay married ‘for the kids,’ so now you’re supposed to be an extra perfect parent. You know, to make up for your inability to stay married.

Anyway. You have the people that say you should be completely transparent and reveal the gory details. Then you have the people that think kids should be left completely unaware of what went down in the marriage to protect them and also it’s none of their business.

I think the best answer is somewhere in the middle of those two extremes. I think it is their business, in part, if for no other reason than Mommy and Daddy don’t live together or do that gross kissing thing anymore. They’re going to notice. That said, they really don’t need to know about my inner turmoil or what the straw that broke my marriage’s back was.

No matter how much or how little you decide to reveal to your kids about your divorce, there are three key things that you should tell them.

"This is not your fault." All kids have a tendency to self-blame, so repeat this one over and over. Don’t just say it, live it too. If your child hears, “If only your father had made dinner once in a while,” your child will hear, “If I hadn’t needed dinner, maybe my parents would still be married.”“We both love you very, very much.” Does this one even need an explanation? Even if your co-parent doesn’t act like it, you can use the old fallback of, “He just has a hard time showing it.”“Daddy is not a bad person/jerk/asshat.” Ok, so you don’t have to state this one specifically, but do refrain from name-calling. Your kids are half you and half your ex. If you resort to personal attacks, your kids won’t hear that their dad is a douche canoe; they’ll hear that they’re a douche canoe, because they are half of him. Then they might ask what douche means or, worse, look it up on the Internet, so really it’s better to just avoid the whole thing.

When you’ve done all that, then snuggle, hug, run, play, eat cookies together, and generally show them that they are wonderful little human beings capable of great joy. The best lesson you can teach by example to your kids after your split with their dad is that their happiness is not dependent on their parents’ marital status.

How much do you think kids need to know about their parents' divorce?

4 Things I'd Rather Spend Money on Than My Kids' College Education

Penulis : Unknown on woensdag 11 september 2013 | 04:57

woensdag 11 september 2013

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

piggy bankEvery month, I cringe a bit when I see the funds coming out of our account that automatically go into our children's college savings funds. It's not much when you look at the soaring price of higher education, but it feels like a lot when there are so many other things to pay for in our daily lives, and things I would much rather spend money on than their college education.

It's not that I don't value education; in fact, there are few things I value more. However, I also loathe the attitude that college is just an expected for kids, and that their parents will pay for it. Then we see the droves who have no appreciation for the experience, who party all night, and see classes an optional activity. Most may successfully plod their way through, but I question how many truly appreciate it and embrace all the opportunities a college educations presents, especially when they don't work for it.

While I'm hopefully raising them to value education too, I know all too well how easy it is to throw that out the window at the first frat house for a beer bong. Maybe because I did just that. I wouldn't say I wasted my college education, but to say I fully applied myself would be a big stretch ... and I even paid for part of my own education. So to have it just handed to you on a silver platter ... I'm not convinced that it's going to be the best thing I can provide for my kids.

Then there are studies that say college isn't even worth the price. So I question why then am I scrimping to pay for something that may or may not pay off so well when there are other, very valuable things I could be doing for my children with that money, such as:

Sleep Away Camp

Studies have shown the lifelong benefits of sleep away camps. They offer independence, adventure, and opportunities for kids to learn to do for themselves in a safe environment. Of course, all that doesn't come without a price.

Travel

There's no better way to learn about the world than to travel and see it firsthand. When I imagine the trips we could take with the money we save for college, I have a hard time not cashing it in and booking plane tickets.

Enrichment Activities

From sports to art and music lessons to tutors and perhaps even private schools, instilling that passion for learning and the arts early is so important, but often we have to skip or eliminate opportunities because they're expensive. Do we forgo early opportunities that could be valuable because we're so focused on saving for the future?

An Advanced Degree

If they prove themselves in college, I'd much rather help them pay for an advanced degree to help keep debt down. At that point I'd be more confident they would appreciate and embrace it.

Of course, in an ideal, cash-flowing world, we'd all be able to provide all of these things for our children. For most of us, however, that's not our reality, so we have to pick and choose. Most of us choose college when it comes down to it because that's what it feels like we need to do, and we don't want our children to forego higher education because they can't pay for it.  So yes, my husband and I will keep saving for it when we can, but it won't be without reservation.

Do you save for your children's college education? What things are most important for you to provide for your children?

4 Icky Things Hiding in Store-Bought Baby Food

baby foodDo you feed your child homemade baby food or store-bought baby food? The answer could say a lot about what kind of parent you are! Just kidding -- we're not going there today. I fed my baby homemade, but mostly out of laziness. It was just easier to mash up whatever was already on our plates (within reason) and feed that to our son. But in case you're looking for an excuse to buy that expensive Babycook, science is on your side. There are some significant reasons why homemade baby food is better, and they're all in the form of icky additives found in prepared baby food. Here's what you probably don't want to feed your baby.

Sugar: A 71-gram serving of banana puree may contain up to 13 grams of sugar. Compare this with the same amount of mashed-up fresh banana, which has just 8.7 grams of sugar. Baby food manufacturers may not add sugar, but since most are made from reconstituted concentrates, you get more sugar anyway.

Sodium: Looking at the banana puree again, the bottled version may have 5 milligrams of sodium. Fresh banana has less than 1 milligram of sodium. Again, this is due to the process of making commercial baby food. By the way, that process also removes some of the helpful fiber you do want.

Fillers: While many baby food makers don't add sugar or salt, they may still add starchy fillers that make it less nutritious per volume than homemade.

Preservatives: Some baby food manufacturers "fortify" their baby food with vitamin C, but babies already get plenty of this vitamin from breast milk or formula. And it's a little suspicious that vitamin C also happens to be a preservative. Why does it need to be in there at all, really?

Just keep in mind, baby food when your baby is under a year old is less about actually feeding your baby and more about getting them used to eating solids and experiencing new flavors. So if you're interested in making your own, don't over-think it. Start small -- you know, take baby steps.

Do you make your own baby food?

10 Things to Love or Hate About Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele

dakota johnsonNow that the Fifty Shades of Grey movie's leads have actually been cast (still can't believe it -- wow!!), everything from utter elation to complete BACKLASH from fans has ensued. It was apparent for a while that those campaigning for Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer, and Alexis Bledel may suffer from disappointment once casting was announced. But the response to the film's actual, official Christian and Ana was up in the air. Now we know, it is a mixed bag. Which really means we have to see what Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson are like on screen as Christian and Ana before we can really make any official judgments. But in the meantime, we can guess why we may love -- or loathe! -- them in the coveted roles.

Here, reasons to love and to hate Dakota as Ms. Steele ...

LOVE: Judging from the two different times she played a carefree co-ed in The Social Network and The Five-Year Engagement, Dakota seems extremely comfortable doing sexy scenes that require her to wear very little clothing. May make for steamy sex scenes, doncha think?HATE: One word: Nepotism. I'm sure she would have gotten the role without any help from her famous mama and dads (biological Don Johnson and step Antonio Banderas), but still. I'm sure her famous name didn't hurt.LOVE: Judging from what we've seen so far, she seems to have a good range, being able to pull off both serious and humorous parts, which will hopefully make it easy for her to carry parts that add comic relief to the sometimes dark storyline.HATE: She's a relative unknown with untested star power. Does she really have the charisma it'll take to render us unable to tear our eyes away from the screen? Sure, Charlie's eye candy, but like producer Dana Brunetti said, the chemistry between the two needs to be spot-on ... Thankfully, producer Michael De Luca promised fans that “auditions were stunning, incredible chemistry.”LOVE: She has no problem going brunette, has gone brunette before, and will hopefully be doing it again for Ana, because fans will really lose it if she doesn't stay true to that very specific, widely known character traits.HATE: The character she's played so far aren't exactly, err, likable. Her character in Five-Year Engagement was downright obnoxious! Is that going to mean her portrayal of Ana may be, too?LOVE: It could be fun to see this help launch her career in a big way, then see her follow in her grandma's (Tippi Hendren!), mom's, and dads' famous footsteps.HATE: Dakota, who is rumored to have a boyfriend, and Charlie, who is in a long-term relationship, can't possibly have the kind of chemistry two unattached actors could have ...LOVE: At 23, she is the perfect age to portray Ana.HATE: She's not Alexis Bledel/Lucy Hale/Shailene Woodley/Emilia Clark/Felicity Jones or any of the other brunette ingenues we were sure of as the shoo-in.

How do you feel about Dakota as Ana? Love/hate/indifferent?

khloe kardashianDespite the rumors running rampant the past few days, saying Lamar Odom was missing and likely on some sort of drug bender, Khloe Kardashian apparently knows exactly where he is and is in contact with him. She wants him to get help. In fact, from the sound of things, that's all she wants right now. Mending their relationship and getting back together is reportedly the last thing on her mind.

But. If these two ever have a chance of making it, they need to get the hell off of reality TV.

Clearly, Khloe and Lamar's problems are much bigger than the media exposure they get. Lamar allegedly has a serious drug problem that started long before he and Khloe got together. By no means did Keeping Up With the Kardashians or Khloe and Lamar cause Lamar's downward spiral. But the pressure of being so scrutinized had to have exacerbated things.

My heart breaks for Khloe. She truly seemed -- and seems -- to be head over heels in love with Lamar. But before they can even think about working on their marriage, he needs to get help. And then after that, if they still want to try to make things work, I think they ought to turn the cameras off for a bit. I mean, could you imagine spending the first few years of your marriage in front of millions of people? There's no way that can be good for a relationship. Hoping everything works for this seemingly adorable couple.

What do you think of this?

eric northmanHAPPY BIRTHDAY ALEXANDER SKARSGARD! That's right:  Alexander Skarsgard was born on August 25 in 1976 -- which makes him 37 years old today! If only ASkars were here right now, I'd stick a candle in a piece of apple cake from IKEA and dance around wearing clogs! (That's what they do in Sweden on people's birthdays, right? Maybe not the clogs part. Where do people wear clogs again? Holland??)

Anyway, point is, this is a very, very special day in the history of hot vampires, and, as such, we should of course be paying tribute to the man behind Eric Northman (who is NOT dead!! Just stop talking about it!). Here are 5 things we love about Alexander Skarsgard!

5 Things I Don't Understand About My Son's Messy Bedroom

Penulis : Unknown on vrijdag 16 augustus 2013 | 12:23

AppId is over the quota

When I was a kid, my mom used to have to constantly nag me to clean my room. I was an epically lazy packrat and had a tendency to simply shove random objects under my bed instead of actually putting anything away. I suppose it's only fitting that I am now the parent of the most clutter-prone child on the planet, and I battle with him daily about his "complete pigsty" (oh look, my own mother's words coming right out of my mouth!) of a bedroom.

Kids are messy, that's just a fact on par with "kids aren't particularly tall" and "kids are generally louder than a Boeing 747." But whenever I step foot into my 7-year-old son's room, I'm amazed at just HOW messy he is. Every few days I make him neaten his room and it takes him forever because of the natural state it reverts to the instant he's done cleaning -- which inevitably includes these five signature bedroom "styles" that are never going to stop driving me crazy.

For instance:

1) Toys piled on top of the toy box.

That right there is a perfectly useful toy box, large enough to neatly store away most of the items that are typically strewn all over the floor of my son's room. But it's never actually filled with toys, because he puts them on TOP. You know, so the LID can't be opened.

2) Clothes dumped next to the laundry container.

Do laundry hampers have some sort of penis-detection feature that launches an invisible force field that prevents clothes from making it inside the container? Because my husband and my younger son do this too. I am literally the only person in my household who has the magical ability to put a soiled item of clothing somewhere other than the floor or half-draped on the side of the basket.

3) Books overflowing from drawers rather than shelves.

Above this jam-packed drawer are a number of shelves that seem to have been installed for the express purpose of displaying books. My son, however, has filled these shelves with rocks, LEGOs, and other assorted flotsam.

4) Weird things hanging from the bulletin board.

We put up bulletin boards so he could proudly display his favorite artwork. Instead, he put up ... well, what IS this? A play safety vest and a flyswatter, I guess. Because you never know when you might have to direct traffic while also killing a mosquito?

5) A bedside table that is like a HOLY SHRINE of garbage.

I tried to straighten this up for him once, and he LOST HIS DAMN MIND. "Mom, everything is there for a REASON!" You mean the broken antelope horn, the pile of LEGO pieces, the plastic shampoo container with a tiny plastic something-or-other in it, the toy gun that's missing the part that makes it shoot, the Valentine's Day card holder you made in school like seven months ago, the busted wallet, and the cup that's apparently been knocked against the wall at some point judging from the stain? "YES!!!" Oooooooookay then.

Does your kid's room have never-ending, totally unexplainable disaster zones like this?

6 Things Every Sports Mom Must Keep in Her Car

AppId is over the quota

by Nicole Fabian-Weber 3 hours ago in Big Kid

sidelinesWhen you're going to a sporting event with a child, be it a professional one or that of an older sibling's, you best come prepared. In case you hadn't noticed, kids don't have the same attention spans we do, and sitting outside can get boring or uncomfortable real fast when you're a small fry.

So, stock up. Stock up on any and all things that will keep your child entertained and fed and warm when the initial thrill of "hey, this is cool!" wears off.

Here are 6 things every sports mom needs to keep in her car at all times.

1. Snacks, snacks, and more snacks. A hungry child is a super unhappy child. And, in turn, a hungry child leads to a sad, frustrated mama. Keep non-perishables -- pretzels, trail mix, water -- in the car for when innings go extra long and you don't feel like buying your child their fourth hot dog.

2. Folding chairs. Keep a few of those collapsible nylon chairs in the trunk at all times. When they're a permanent fixture in your car, you don't run the risk of ever -- gasp -- forgetting about them. Also, you get to avoid lugging them in and out of the house.

3. Blankets. They say it's a good idea to keep a blanket or two in your car at all times for emergencies, but they're bound to come in handy when outdoor games go into overtime. Cold kids equal no bueno.

4. A tricycle. When things get real, time to bust out the tricycle. No child can resist the sight of a teeny-tiny bike just begging to be ridden.

5. A pen and paper. Try to get your little one involved by inventing a game about the game you're watching. Ask them to keep track of how many times the ball is kicked or how many time-outs there are. They'll love feeling like they're a part of things.

6. A camera (with or without film!). Ask your child to be the "photographer" for the event. They can either take pictures for real or simply make a game of it, acting like they're a member of the press!

How do you keep your little one entertained at sporting events?

10 Things Never to Say to a Co-Sleeping Parent

co-sleepingI wasn't going to co-sleep with my baby. I thought it was weird and barbaric. But then my anthropologist friends talked me into it. (Yes, of course, it's always the anthropologists.) They went over all the reasons why it makes perfect sense, from the security it gives your infant to the way it bonds the whole family together. And then, when my son was born, I couldn't stand to be parted from him anyway. Co-sleeping just made sense to me.

I get that it's not for everyone. But man, people who don't get it really don't get it. Can you please spare us your judgment? Here are 10 annoying things you should never say to a co-sleeping parent.

1. Isn't that illegal? No, actually. It's not.

2. How do you not roll over your baby? Surprisingly, I don't go to bed drunk or on drugs. Also, you actually do have a physical sense of where your baby is, even when you're asleep.

3. I know someone who knows someone who knows someone whose baby died from co-sleeping. Okay.

4. How do you have sex? 1. Don't worry, sex happens. 2. You don't need to know the details. Do I ask about your sex life?

5. You'll never get that kid out of your bed. Yes, actually, I did. It's not easy, but when the time comes, you really can get your kid to sleep in their own bed.

6. That's kind of creepy and incestuous. Oh, and leaving your baby to sleep ALONE in a separate room is so humane?

7. I don't see how you can get any sleep that way. It's extremely cozy. In fact, I slept great because I never had to get up in the middle of the night. If my baby woke, I just nursed him quietly and quickly went back to sleep.

8. You'll spoil your kids. You can't spoil a baby. How many times do we have to say it?

9. Babies need to be sleep trained. Actually, they don't. You can not sleep train your baby and they'll still grow up to be a fully functional, independent adult.

10. That's just weird. I think you're weird! Okay, sorry, that was immature. I'll put it this way -- more people co-sleep either deliberately or accidentally than you'd think. It's pretty common.

Did I miss anything?

10 Rude Things People Say to Pregnant Moms Already With Big Families

Penulis : Unknown on maandag 5 augustus 2013 | 20:03

maandag 5 augustus 2013

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

big familiesThe first two times I was pregnant, people were generally pretty polite and nice to me. Sure, I had the occasional tummy rub from a stranger and a couple of questioning looks when I looked more chunky than preggo in the early months, but mostly people were gracious, sweet, and congratulatory.

My third pregnancy, seven years AFTER my first, has been a little different. It might be because for many people I know who are educated, liberal types, having more than two children biologically is considered bad and selfish. Or maybe it's just because for a lot of people who have trouble conceiving, a third (or fourth or fifth) pregnancy just feels greedy.

Whatever the reason, I have had some stunningly rude comments about my baby bump this time, and I asked around and most of my friends with 2+ kids have heard similar things. Here are the 10 rudest things we have heard:

1.) "Do you actually know where babies come from?" This gem came to me via a friend of a friend. I so wanted to point out that that there are five years between my last and my second to last because I know VERY well where babies come from and this baby was very deliberate and planned.

2.) "Uh-oh, now you can't call yourself an environmentalist, you are going to need a big gas guzzler." This one angers me because it's usually said by some smug hippy who has no clue. We are actually never going to get an SUV. We may get a minivan down the line, but for now, we are going to fit just fine in our non-gas guzzling vehicles.

3.) "Couldn't you have adopted? The world is so overpopulated already?" Anyone who says this clearly has no idea how difficult it is to adopt. My husband and I had actually always planned to have two and then adopt a third, but when we started filling out the paperwork and looking into it, it was an incredibly daunting, potentially painful, and very expensive endeavor. I respect anyone who can go through with it so very, very much. But it wasn't for us. And it's not for anyone to assume it's easy, either.

4.) "Haven't you heard of ZPG?" Yep. Zero population growth. I've heard of it. I guess I really am just a selfish, resource sucking jerk. But hey, at least I am not totally uncouth, judgmental, and sanctimonious!

5.) Nothing at all. I have had more than one person in my life simply say nothing or ignore the pregnancy entirely. I know that some of them have struggled to conceive, so I try to be understanding, but it's hurtful. Plain and simple.

6.) "Is this your little 'oopsie'?" Why is it so hard to believe that people -- even those of us who have the "perfect" boy and girl -- might still choose to go for number three because that's the number of children we WANT? Is that really so weird?

7.) "Why do you have a gender preference when you already have one of each?" The reality is, some people do prefer one gender over another. Let's not make them feel more guilty about it just because we didn't. It's not really our place to judge.

8.) "Trying for that boy/girl, I bet." This one is often said to mamas whose first two were the same sex. It's potentially very hurtful because, no, we can't control the sex of our babies, and also, maybe we want all of one sex. Maybe we don't care. Maybe it's not anyone's business to assume.

9.) "Are you, like, religious?" Contrary to popular belief, people often have bigger families for reasons OTHER than spirituality. Some people just want bigger families.

10.) "OMG! Three/Four/Five is the most stressful number of kids. Your life is over now!" OK, I get it, more than one or two babies isn't for you. But come on? How is that helpful? Most pregnant women are already stressed enough.

What rude things did people say to you after pregnancy number two?

5 Things Every Mom Should Do With Their 'Big Kid' Before the Next Baby Comes Along

big brotherRight now, I only have one child, but from what I hear, there are a wide variety of emotions that come into play before baby #2 makes his or her debut. And I can only imagine. When I think about having another child, I look at my daughter and think, "Gosh, how could I possibly love someone else this much? My heart is filled to the brim!" Okay, that's a little cheesy, but that's the honest to god general sentiment. Then I think about adding the hormones from pregnancy into the mix, and oof. The whole thing seems so ... emotional. But I'd like to have another baby someday. Maybe even two. But I, like all moms, want to be sure to soak up every minute with my "big girl" before the next baby makes their grand entrance.

Who knows what will happen if/when I'm pregnant next, but if I do have another, I plan on doing these five special things with my daughter during the last month of my pregnancy. While it's still just me and her.

1. Let her stay up late, watching movies. Everybody knows "staying up late" is a truly special thing for kids. Especially if there are movies and popcorn involved. This isn't something your kid should do all the time for obvious reasons, but it's an "exciting" thing for them, and kind of shows them that they're officially a "big kid".

2. Take a long, leisurely nap together. For most moms, nap time is when we get stuff done. One day, let everything just be, and crawl up with your little one and sleep when he sleeps.

3. Go on a "date" together. This, of course, should still be done once in a while after baby arrives, but having a really special day together -- just you and big brother or big sis -- is such a sweet and fun way to show how important they'll always be.

4. Get him or her excited for being a big brother or sister. Tell them all about the awesome perks of being the older sibling. You can also purchase one of those cute "big sis" or "big brother" shirts or books.

5. Let them sleep in bed with you. If you don't co-sleep, invite your kid into bed with you for the night as a special "treat". Though you may want to schedule this one for a good two or three weeks ahead of your due date, so things don't get confusing once baby arrives.

What things did you do to make your older kid feel special before you had another?

6 Things Around the House That Can Double as Sex Toys

feet in bed, things around the house that double as sex toysIf you're looking to spice up your sex life, you don't need to spend lots of money on fancy sex toys or special lubes. I mean I'm all for it, of course, but if you can save your pennies and use stuff you've already got around the house, why not?

As it turns out, you've probably got most, if not all of these things sitting right there in your home looking innocent. So get ready to get dirty with my spicy suggestions!

1. Shower Head: Remember the tub scene in The 40-Year-Old Virgin? That was no joke. They totally work, if you know what I mean, especially if you've got a fancy one with multiple settings. Pulsating? Yes, please.

2. Boppy Pillow: Don't throw out your nursing pillow! It can double as a sexy pillow. Just prop it under your butt, or get a little more creative, and you've got some fun new angles to try.

3. Olive Oil: Who needs fancy lube when you've probably got olive oil right in your kitchen cabinet -- it's 100 percent natural too! You can use coconut oil as well, if you have it on the shelf.

4. Back Massager: Yes, of course we all know about the vibrating ones, but you can actually use the ones that don't vibrate too. A little strategic placement and wrist motion is all you need.

5. Electric Toothbrush: These are actually perfect for clitoral stimulation and it's pretty obvious why. Just cover the head (or use the back) and enjoy yourself. And of course, make sure you put that one away so no one uses it as an actual tool for cleaning teeth!

6. Face Scrubber: So you naively assume those battery-operated face scrubbers are popular because they make your skin look younger? I don't think so. Just pop the brush head off and you've got yourself a nice vibrator.

What items around your house have you used as sex toys? Spill it!
