Judge Who Told Accused Sex Offender to Write to His 13-Year-Old Victim Wasn't Totally Wrong

letterJudge Shari Michels caused quite a controversy recently by telling a cop accused of sexting and groping a 13-year-old girl that he could write a letter to his victim. Sounds crazy, right. Understandably, people freaked out. How could this officer of the court encourage and allow such a thing? But as horrific as it sounds, Judge Michels is not totally off her rocker.

At the hearing for former New York City police officer Modesto Alamo after his arrest for forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a minor, Judge Michels seemed to take pity on the man. Though she ordered him to stay away from the young girl, she also said, "If you feel that there is a need for communication, write it down, put it in the envelope, and put a date on it, and in the future, if you want to give them that information, you can do that then."

Not surprisingly, her words have enraged the girl's family and I am sure countless others. But while this judge may not be best equipped to provide counseling or therapy to this alleged criminal, her actions do highlight an important issue that is often ignored. Sexual predators have an illness and they need to be helped in addition to being punished. Why help him, you may ask? Because one day he will be back on the street.

If they do not learn how to deal with their illegal sexual proclivities, they are doomed to repeat them. I have no idea what the best approach is to helping someone with this problem. Michels also ordered him to have a psychological evaluation and get treatment after he reportedly talked of suicide. I imagine different sex offenders may need different things to eradicate or suppress those despicable urges. But I am 100 percent sure that they need some kind of intervention beyond just being locked up.

With all the furor her advice has caused, Judge Michels has since issued an apology through a spokesman. She regrets what her decision may have made the victim feel and did not intend to offend anyone. I buy that. The important thing to remember is that she was trying to make sure Alamo found a way to deal with his demons and not become a repeat offender. Can we really blame her for that?

What do you think of Judge Michel's advice to this defendant? Do you think sexual predators should get counseling?

Military Mom Almost Ruins Plans for Surprise Reunion With Daughter and We Totally Get It (VIDEO)

Capt. JR LundI love a good military homecoming video. Who doesn't (no, really, who?)? But I've always wondered how it is that these moms and dads manage to keep themselves from blowing the surprise. If it were me just home from war, I don't know that I could contain myself. That's what I really love about the latest military mom surprising her kid at a football game.

Capt. JR Lund came home early from Afghanistan. She didn't tell her 13-year-old daughter ... so she could manage to surprise her at Saturday's Wisconsin vs. Purdue game. But from the looks of it, Mom almost didn't make it to the game!

Aww! Did you catch the part about how Mom just wanted to go run over and grab her daughter ... but she was trying her darndest to rein it in so she could make the surprise even more meaningful? She almost ruined her own surprise! Maybe it's because she's an Army Reservist that JR Lund is so much stronger than the rest of us?

Or at least stronger than me?

I don't know that I could do it. If I'm away from my kid just for a few days for a business trip, I come home and it's all I can do not to smother the poor thing with love and attention!

Not that JR Lund's daughter isn't getting plenty of that -- did you see the look on mother's and daughter's faces when they finally DID see each other?

Would you be able to hold out to surprise your kid or would you ruin your own surprise?

What Was Totally Staged at Tamra Barney's Wedding and the Biggest 'Housewives' Twitter Wars (VIDEO)

Tamra Barney and Eddie Judge are married!! Congrats to them. And hey, if it’s your third wedding, why NOT have three bridal gowns?? I say go BIG or go HOME, but what did Tamra’s family say, and which former Housewife made a surprise appearance on the finale episode of Tamra's OC Wedding?

Meanwhile on The Real Housewives of Miami, I saw so much back story, it almost distracted me from the actual episode! Mama drama, the biggest HIVES I’ve ever seen, and where I call producer meddling ...

The Tamra Barney Judge wedding spinoff is over! I loved seeing the gorgeous ceremony come together, but of course I’m always looking for what you DON’T see behind-the-scenes, noticing placement of cast members, camera setups, and of course promotional consideration -- how much did they pay for all of this?

If you were Tamra and Eddie, wouldn’t you be a little tempted to swing that cake? I know I would ...

Things are so hot in Miami, if I were a producer, I’d wear a HAZ-MAT suit. Most of us love Twitter and Facebook, but how has social media changed the Housewives? This week, we discuss how the fans get involved and can actually drive storylines. We had ladies who worry about whether their children will get dragged into the drama -- I give you my take as to whether Adriana de Moura did a good job with her son or made things worse.

And finally, it wouldn’t be The Real Deal without going deep into the feud between Adriana and Lea Black. Adriana thinks she has a smoking gun, but does she really? Here’s that People Magazine article, and watch the exclusive video for my take on that and so much more! PLUS, now that Tamra's spinoff is over, let me know which shows YOU want me to cover.

20 Totally Unbelievable Reasons Why My Kid Is Late to School

running to school Tarde empezaba a mi hijo a la escuela ayer.

7. Voldemort nos perseguía en la dirección equivocada.

8. Mi hijo no pudo encontrar su varita mágica.

9. Sharknado!

10. Nuestra máquina del tiempo está fuera de servicio.

11. Nadie espera que la Inquisición española.

¿12. Nos olvidamos de establecer nuestros relojes hacia adelante, hacia atrás, que es otra vez? ¿Todavía no? Eso explica muchas cosas.

13. Los extraterrestres secuestraron a nuestros relojes.

20. Estuvimos muy cómodos en casa.

¿Tarde sacas a tus hijos a la escuela? ¿Lo que generalmente es tu excusa?

New iPhone 5S Is TOTALLY Worth the Wait if These 3 Rumors Are True

appleThe iPhone 5S is supposedly making its genuine human interaction-killing way into stores some time in the very near future. "Very near," as in September 10, as that's when the official Apple event is scheduled to be held. Idiots people are already lining up in front of Apple stores to be the first (read: coolest) one out of their friends who can say they have the new iPhone. And while that's something I would never in a million years do, the new iPhone is rumored to have some cool new features

Many are claiming that the new iPhone is going to have a fingerprint scanner as an increased security measure. The China Times was the first to report this information, and backing this theory up is PayPal's chief information security officer, Michael Barrett, who said, "There is going to be a fingerprint enabled phone on the market later this year. Not just one, multiple," in a recent keynote speech. Pretty cool, as iPhones are seriously hot commodity for thieves.

Another rumor swirling around is that there's going to be a gold model added to the current black and white iPhones. No word on whether the gold iPhone, if available, is going to be the same cost as its black and white counterparts, or if it's going to be a more expensive version. Let's hope the same, because paying a higher price for a color is ridiculous.

And, finally, the most exciting iPhone rumor of all is the possibility of there being a new, "cheaper" iPhone available. (This, also, is the most widely-reported rumor, so it would be a fairly big shock if this weren't true.) Reportedly called the "iPhone 5C", the cheaper phone may be a bit smaller and come in a variety of pastely-looking colors. No word on how cheap this iPhone 5C will be, but I mean, come on, how cheap can it possibly be? This is Apple we're talking about here.

And now we wait.

Are you excited for the new iPhone?

Tayla Carrigan and her Army dadMost 14-year-old girls wouldn't be ecstatic if their dad showed up unannounced to a school dance. But for Louisiana teen Tayla Carrigan, she couldn't have been more ecstatic when her dad, Army Sergeant Kelly Carrigan, surprised her at her back-to-school dance after being deployed for the past five months.

Sergeant Kelly, who left to go overseas in April, endured a serious knee injury that forced him to return home. While his daughter Tayla and her sister Logan thought he had been relocated to a base somewhere in Europe, Dad was really stationed just four hours away at Fort Polk. And as about 800 students sang "Proud to Be an American," Sergeant Carrigan surprised his daughter and she got the hug she's been waiting for for months.

Seriously, this is probably one of the best homecoming surprises I've seen in a while. Watch Sergeant Kelly Carrigan surprise his daughter, here:

9 Reasons Moms Are Totally Jealous of Their Teens

Penulis : Unknown on maandag 26 augustus 2013 | 18:51

maandag 26 augustus 2013

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

cartwheel in the rainComplaining about your teenager is a rite of passage for parents. They can be absolutely maddening what with the door slamming and the eye rolling and that infernal racket pouring out of their earbuds. But sometimes I wonder if the ladies (and gentleman) doth protest too much.

Are teenagers really that bad? Or could it be that moms are a wee bit jealous of their teenagers?

My kid isn't there yet -- she's 8 -- but I have a teenage babysitter who spends enough time at my house that she's practically a second daughter. I'll admit it ... there are times I am pea green with envy.

Don't think this is you? Perhaps this will change your mind ...

Behold the things teens do that moms only WISH we could:

1. Browsing at the mall. It's easy to get annoyed by that gaggle of giggling girls that takes up the entire line of changing room stalls in the Gap ... the girls you know probably aren't going to actually buy anything. But ohhhhh, to have the time to spend trying on 10 different outfits ... and the luxury to go in a changing room without a toddler hanging off of you!

2. Wearing a bikini. It's not that moms can't wear bikinis. Some women can really rock a two piece after kids. It's that teenagers can wear them without anyone commenting on whether they're too old for said piece of swimwear.

3. Blasting music in the car. Go ahead, roll your eyes at the kids bumping one lane over at the red light. But if you're really honest with yourself, you still remember the amazing feeling of driving down the road with the windows open, the music blaring, while you and your friends sang along at the top of your lungs.

4. Sleeping until noon. It's easy to call a kid lazy for snoozing away the day, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't long for the lie in most mornings.

5. Doing cartwheels (or anything similar). Some moms still have the agility of a cat. The rest of us buy ibuproferen in bulk.

6. Believing money would magically appear. Most kids seem to believe money grows on trees. What I wouldn't give to return a time when life was that simple ...

7. Riding rollercoasters, taking flights, etc. without fear. Teens take risks that scare the crap out of their parents, but it sure would be nice to revisit those fearless days ... when you were completely invincible. Sigh.

8. Eating junk for dinner without a care in the world. Imagine no little voice in the back of your head telling you that it's wrong to make a meal of Diet Pepsi and Skittles.

9. Expecting maid service. Yes, it is frustrating feeling like your kids still expect you to do everything for them. But wouldn't it be nice to have someone do everything for YOU?

What teenager things do you kinda sorta wish you could still do?

Nina Dobrev Is Totally Over Ian Somerhalder (No, We Swear)

Ian Somerhalder, Nina DobrevPoor Nina Dobrev. She's young, gorgeous, successful, and got to see that smokin' hunk of burnin' love, Ian Somerhalder, naked. But no one cares. No one cares, my friends. She's just pitied. Pitied because she lost that smokin' hunk of burnin' -- what was I saying? Well, anyway, Nina is single now. (Sob.) But, no, seriously, people!!! This isn't 1912. Nina is a modern woman, she can be single if she wants. And apparently that is definitely what she wants. The Vampire Diaries star says: "I don't need no stinkin' man." Haha. No, she told US Weekly:

I've been a relationship girl and I've been in long-term relationships my whole life until this point, so I think I'm looking forward to spending some time with myself and finding myself again.

And, no, that is not code for: "I'm still so broken up about Ian that I can even THINK of knocking boots with someone new." Okay, maybe it is.

I mean, what is the girl going to say? "I just broke up with Ian but I can't WAIT to get back into a relationship again because I SUCK at being single, have no friends, and need a man in my life because I feel worthless"?

Of course she is not going to say that!! Because it's not true!! (Cue up: "Since You Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson.)

Nina goes on:

I'm just discovering different sides of me and growing and then I'll figure out what I like in a man when I see it. It's all about finding out what meshes and what doesn't, and what you like and what you don't. Life is about experiences, so I guess I'm just figuring that out.

Which is definitely NOT another way of saying, "I'm crushed about the breakup with that sickeningly hot stud Ian and am just waiting until he comes to his senses and realizes what he lost, and comes crawling back on hands and knees, begging and pleading."

She's totally not thinking that, you guys!!! Cut her some slack!! I still can't get over how they broke up right after they rushed their sick cat to the vet in the middle of the night. Who does that???

Anyway, it's clear from what Nina is saying that she's feeling strong, confident, and ready to discover who she is as a person. And she's totally not blubbering in her pillow every night. Sheesh, you cynical people.

Do you think Nina is over Ian?

Babymoons: Stupid Name, Totally Essential

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
by Nicole Fabian-Weber 2 hours ago

pregnantWhen I was pregnant, I thought it was kind of dumb. A babymoon. What the hell is that, anyway? And the name is stupid: Babymoon. Thanks, but no thanks. It sounds like just another newly-invented, self-indulgent marketing ploy. Kind of like push-present. People have been giving birth since the beginning of time, and it wasn't until recently -- until parents became the biggest consumers out there -- that we started feeling pressure to partake in these things.

"No, we're not going on a babymoon," I'd tell people who would ask.

"Really? You should. It'll be your last chance to be together for a while."

"We're good," I'd say.

The months leading up to the birth of my sweet daughter were business as usual for my husband and me. We worked. We made dinner. We watched movies at home.

And now, 16 months into parenthood, I really regret not taking one. I regret not going on a babymoon.

Travel is one of those things that seems to be quintessentially for the childless. Sure, there are the parents who take their incredibly easygoing kids anywhere -- and even I've taken my daughter on a few trips. But it's not the same. It's not a vacation where you leave feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. It's not a vacation where you leave feeling like you reconnected with your partner. Sure, you may get to do a few things for yourself. But they have to be done in shifts. You get a pedicure while your husband watches the kids. He goes golfing after you take over. Yes, it's great family fun, and come on, it's vacation, so what's not to like. But it's not vacation as we knew it.

I haven't left my daughter overnight yet. My husband and I were planning on going somewhere this summer for a night or two. Just the two of us. But after looking at the cost of last-minute travel, coupled with the cost of bills and childcare and food, etc., it's really not the smartest move right now. It's the adult thing to do, but it, immaturely, makes me a little sad. I had finally summoned up the courage to leave my gorgeous baby, and, well, now it isn't happening. I was looking forward to arriving at a hotel with my husband. To having a glass of wine on a super child-unfriendly balcony. To whiling away a few hours on a beach without thinking about sunburns and wet diapers and naptime. I was really looking forward to a night where it was solely about us.

If it sounds like I'm complaining, I'm not. Okay, maybe I am a little. But I admit: I miss vacations. And I'm sorry we didn't get in one last hurrah before our family became three. It would have been a nice memory for my husband and me to have.

While I was pregnant, I had many delusions of grandeur about the kind of mother I would be. "My kid isn't going to rule my life," I'd say. "We're still going to go out and be us. We'll just have a baby." Yeah. Okay. The first year of parenthood is an adjustment period. A disorienting adjustment period. And now that I feel like my husband and I have this parenting thing down -- and we're pretty okay at it -- we're ready to get back to us. Not exactly as we were, necessarily. But as we are now. As parents. And, well, I can't think of a better place to do that than on a white sandy beach.

Pregnant women, if you're debating whether or not to take a trip -- a babymoon -- do it. Book the trip. It doesn't have to be a two-week-long Mediterranean getaway; a weekend a few hours away will suffice. And when you're there, take lots of photos. Your sweet children will love to see what you looked like before they came around. And you will, too.

Did you take a babymoon?

28 Totally Bizarre Questions Every Mom Has Asked Herself

Penulis : Unknown on donderdag 1 augustus 2013 | 15:38

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

someecards.com - Lately, I've found myself asking my readers rhetorical parenting questions in a not so overt attempt to assuage guilt and make sure I'm not alone. Last week's guilt driven query was: Is it wrong for the "Tooth Fairy" to steal money from one kid to pay the other?

PS: The answer according to my Facebook Fans is a resounding no. Whew. Though I fear that armed with this knowledge, I may be asking them next week if the same goes for paying the pizza delivery guy. Oh well.

That said, I'm guessing there is a slew of questions every mom will ask herself at least once -- here are just a few...

1. At what age do I have to tell them babies don't come from your belly button?

2. Is it wrong for the "Tooth Fairy" to steal money from one kid to pay the other?

3. What the hell sound does a chick make? Does it go peep-peep or chirp-chirp? Or does it squeak? (Wait, it may only squeak if you step on it, crap.)

4. Is it really worth it to fight over them brushing their teeth every day, twice a day? I mean, they're just gonna lose them all anyway, right?

5. How much longer before one of them realizes I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing?

6. Will I ever be able to wash all my body parts during a single shower?

7. How many times in one day can a child utter the word mom/mommy? How many times in an hour? A minute? A second?

8. How can such a tiny adorable thing produce such an offensive disgusting odor?

9. If I freeze right now and act like a statue, will he fall back to sleep so that I can exit the room, or did I just screw up my whole night by checking on him (again)?

10. Is it creepy that I want to snuggle with them forever?

11. What did I do today that they will bring up years from now in therapy?

12. Will my kids ever eat things that one couldn't find on a kiddie menu?

13. Does jumping in the pool not count as a bath?

14. Will my child still be using a diaper/binky/blankie when she walks down the aisle?

15. Why does it seem like they're the messiest right after I clean up?

16. Will it ever be possible to make it across my house without stepping on or tripping over a Lego, Barbie, ball, skateboard, drum stick, puzzle piece, My Little Pony, or something they got in a Happy Meal?

17. Is it considered child labor if I tell them part of the reason I had them was to answer phones, let the dog out, and bring me water?

18. When did I go from being the most awesome person ever to the most uncool person to walk this Earth?

And these are the top 10 from my readers (thanks guys!):

19. When will he learn I really DON'T have eyes in the back of my head? - Lynn

20. How long will "kisses" make everything feel better? - Amy

21. At what point will they understand the words coming out of my mouth, THE FIRST TIME?!? - Steph

22. How much longer 'til they turn on me like rabid dogs? - Carolyn

23. Will my husband and I EVER be able to sleep alone/naked/all night again? - Kimberlie

24. At what point did I become my mother, and is this really a bad thing? - Loren

25. Do they deliberately aim for the wall next to the toilet? - Daniel

26. How much longer 'til I get to go over to THEIR houses & mess everything up? - Joanne

27. How much longer can I keep telling them it's the law to learn to swim? - Sarah

28. When can they get jobs? - Michele

You know you wanna add one ... go for it!
