Kim Kardashian’s Leaving Her Family Behind -- What Does This Mean for Her Future?

kim kardashianThe times they are a-changing! If you had told me in 2010 that in 2013 Kim Kardashian would be the blonde mother of Kanye West's baby and that she occasionally posed for high fashion magazines covered in jam, I would have hospitalized you for insanity. Then I would have stolen your time machine. HA! (In this scenario, I am, apparently, quite devious.)

But that's how things shook out! Every move Kim's made over the past 18 months looks like an effort to separate from the family that helped make her career. What she's done now only makes her intentions even clearer.

Kim's fired her publicist and signed with someone else. It doesn't sound like there was any falling out with her former long-time rep, Jill Fritzo. The only real reason for the shift seems to be Kim angling to get away from her family, who are currently still handled by Fritzo.

If Kim's doing all this on her own, that's one thing. But if the pressure to break ties with her famous family is coming from Kanye, that's less cool. Kanye's wanted to make over Kim since they began dating. Remember how he trashed her wardrobe and eventually all but refused to continue being featured on Keeping Up With the Kardashians? It's almost like he's embarrassed of Kim. Helping your lady out professionally is all well and good, but trying to make her into someone she's not is a giant red flag.

Do you think Kim is bowing to pressure from Kanye?

Dog Saves Family From House Fire Just in the Nick of Time

AppId is over the quota

by Julie Ryan Evans 11 hours ago

fireTalk about a dog who deserves a bone. Muggles the dog should get the biggest, juiciest one imaginable after alerting his owners to a dangerous house fire. As it was, the rapidly spreading fire destroyed all of the family's possessions, but thanks to Muggles they at least escaped with their lives.

According to 3 News, Tracy Baird was in her Auckland, New Zealand, home when Muggles got her attention with an unusual bark and then led her to the front of the home. Once there she saw the alarming sight.

She told the station:

I saw an unnatural light, like a flickering bright light, and went into the front bedroom and the corner of the curtain was alight. So I got my daughters out. One was upstairs and one in the lounge. And by the time I got them out, so it would have been seconds, maybe a minute, the house was unenterable. The front windows were smashing out and there was no way you could enter it again.

Baird says she wouldn't have noticed the fire for at least another couple of minutes, and by then it may have been too late. Thank goodness for Muggles and his strong instinct to protect his family.

It's certainly not the first heroic dog story we've seen either. Last week saw the amazing and heartbreaking story of a dog who alerted a 7-month-old baby's parents that he was being abused by a babysitter. We've seen dogs take bullets for their owners, and even save babies from kidnappers. In short, dogs are pretty amazing.

In my family we debate all the time whether to get one or not. With our busy lives, we have always come down on the side that we just can't handle the extra work and commitment that owning a dog takes, but when I read stories like these I often wonder how we can not bring one into our family. I'm feeling major puppy pangs right now.

Has your dog ever done anything heroic?

Soldier Surprises Family at Birthday Dinner and Mom Has Weirdest Reaction Ever (VIDEO)

military homecomingAny reaction is always a great one when it comes to military homecoming videos, but the reaction of this mother innocently out for a birthday dinner has to take the cake. It takes her a good 12 seconds to realize that it's her son -- you know, the person she gave birth to -- standing right in front of her. Her other son immediately hops up out of his chair and embraces his long lost brother the moment he sees him. But Mom? Nope. No clue as to who the nice gentleman who just walked over to their table is.

You've gotta see this.

I love that she just sits there at first, staring at her own flesh and blood, completely oblivious to who the heck he is. She clearly was not expecting to see him any time soon. Surprise executed perfectly. Welcome home!

How awesome is this mom's delayed reaction?

Family Dog Helps Parents Expose Their Child's Abusive Babysitter

Shortly after relocating to Charleston last year, Benjamin and Hope Jordan searched high and low for a reliable babysitter for their then 7-month-old son Finn. Like many parents, they were probably filled with an anxiety that ceased slightly when the background check for their potential sitter, 22-year-old Alexis Khan, came out clean as a whistle.

But Khan wasn't fooling their family dog.

"About five months into her being our babysitter, we started to notice that our dog was very defensive of our son when she would come in the door," said Benjamin Jordan. "He was very aggressive towards her and a few times we actually had to physically restrain our dog from going towards her."

Suspicious, the Jordan's placed an iPhone under their couch to record the sitter with Finn while they were at work. What they heard later that day devastated them.

Khan was caught on tape cussing at the baby. The curses soon turned to slapping noises and Finn's cries could be heard changing from distress to pain.

Is your blood boiling yet? Can you even imagine how you would feel?

"I just wanted to reach through the audio tape, go back in time, and just grab him up," Jordan said. "To know that five months I had handed my child to a monster, not knowing what was going on in my house for that day."

The good news -- the only good news to come from this sad story, other than the fact that the Jordans can take solace in the fact that they have one amazing pooch -- is that Khan was arrested, confessed to the abuse, and was sentenced this week to serve one to three years in prison.

As part of her plea, Khan will be placed on a child abuse registry, which is the least that the courts could do after what this child and these poor parents went through. She actually qualifies for parole in one year -- which seems ludicrous to me.

I understand a punishment has to fit a crime and that I am especially sensitive to and passionate about this issue because I have a toddler, but is one year really enough time for this crazy woman to learn the lesson that she has no right to put her hands on someone else's child? She could have chosen any other part-time job -- why choose one that required her to be a loving caretaker?

Do you think Khan's sentence is fair?

6 Tips for Planning an Amazing Family Photo Scavenger Hunt

Penulis : Unknown on maandag 2 september 2013 | 14:20

maandag 2 september 2013

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

taking picturesLooking for something fun to do as a family? These final days of summer and early fall are a perfect time to head outside for some bonding and togetherness, and a scavenger hunt is the perfect activity for all ages.

There are all types of scavenger hunts to be had, but my favorite is the photo scavenger hunt. Everyone loves taking pictures; you can do it anywhere; and the biggest bonus -- you don't have to figure out what to do with all the stuff you collect in a typical scavenger hunt. Win. Win.

Here are some tips for organizing a great one.

1. Gather the Equipment

To start, you'll need cameras, of course. From phone cameras, to regular old digital ones or Polaroids, anything that takes a picture works. Film cameras should be avoided, however, since you won't be able to see the photos right away. Depending on the ages of players and number of cameras available, you may want to break up into teams.

2. Make a list.

From colors, to items beginning with specific letters,  to a list of random items, there are limitless ideas for which to hunt. If you're outside, nature items, various streets signs, or pictures of players in various locations are good ones. If weather doesn't cooperate outdoors, an indoor mall provides all sorts of inspiration.

3. Lay Out the Rules

Make sure everyone knows ahead of time what it takes to win. Whether it's the first person to make it back to a set location with his pictures, or the first one to post theirs to Instagram, or whatever you decide, make sure the rules are clear.

4. Safety First

The quest for the perfect pictures shouldn't get in the way of common sense safety, and remind players that everything should be legal (no trespassing, etc.).

5. Pick a Prize

Whether it's a silly paper crown you make, letting the winner pick where you all go for ice cream afterwards, or a small monetary prize, a little reward at the end can make the competition fun.

6. Capture the Memories

Now that you have all those pictures, you can use them to make a great scrapbook page, collage, or online slide show.

Does your family do scavenger hunts?

'Keeping Up With the Kardashians' Recap: Kim Kardashian Serves Placenta to Her Unsuspecting Family

Kim KardashianEww! Keeping Up With the Kardashians tonight was not for those with weak stomachs. Kim Kardashian was considering whether she would be eating the placenta when her baby was born.

Kourtney, of course, was all for it, saying she'd eat some of Kim's placenta too. She said she wanted to have a third child just so she could eat the placenta. The rest of the family -- Bruce and Kris Jenner in particular -- were grossed out by the notion.

It really bothered Kim that they weren't more open and understanding, and so she decided to teach them a lesson. The plan: She and Kourtney would order a random woman's placenta off the internet, cook it, and serve it to their unsuspecting family. Only once they gobbled it down would they reveal what they had served to them.

I was honestly open-mouthed in disgust and horror that they would actually go through with it. But there they were doing so.  Now, I know there are definitely benefits to eating one's own placenta, and I think it's great for women who want to so. But to make your family eat that of a stranger and not tell them what it really is -- well, that's just wrong.

Jonathan Cheban, Kris, Bruce all ate it and were reasonably appalled when Kourtney and Kim broke the news to them about what they had just eaten. No one wretched right there at the table, but they would have been justified in doing so. I know the family plays pranks all the time, but this just went way too far.

Fortunately, later in the show the girls revealed (at least to viewers) that it was not in fact placenta -- it was brisket. Phew! But they had yet to tell those that sampled it, so they still think they ate it, which was bad enough. Even though I was relieved to know that the whole thing wasn't quite as gross as I thought it was, it was still pretty bad.

So now, the questions we're all dying to know -- did Kim really end up eating the placenta after North was born? And perhaps, more importantly, did she give Kourtney a bite?

Do you think Kim and Kourtney's prank went too far? Would you/did you eat your own placenta?

Child’s Eerie Whispered 911 Call Saves Family From a Knife-Wielding Attacker

phone"Help us." That's what a child's voice whispered to a 911 dispatcher -- a call that led to the rescue of a woman and her three children. The whispered call must have sent chills down the dispatcher's spine. What horrible act made this child call 911? Whatever was happening, clearly it was not over, and the child may have been risking their own safety with this cry for help.

Fortunately, that call was successful. Sunday morning police arrested Miguel Espada for attacking a woman named Melissa Armey. Armey says the two were arguing when Espada threw her to the kitchen floor and threatened her with a dart, gesturing that he would plunge it into her neck. "I'm gonna kill you," she claims he told her. Armey tried to run away, but Espada grabbed her hair and then threatened her again, this time with a butcher's knife. She says he made slashing gestures toward her neck, saying, "I'm going to kill you if you call the police. I hate you and your kids and I'm gonna kill you."

Hence the whispered call.

Armey and her kids did manage to make a break for it before Espada was arrested. According to the report, Espada lived in the house of the incident, so this sounds like it could have been a domestic abuse case. Thank goodness one of Armey's children was brave enough to get help. It's sad, but sometimes adults get caught in complicated situations and feel like they don't have options -- when actually they do. And it takes their children to recognize how dangerous and wrong their situation is and get help.

If this is a domestic abuse situation, I hope there's some follow-through that will keep Armey's family safe long-term. I was just reading this article about how inept our system usually is at dealing with domestic abuse, and how taking a different approach could save lives. This child's brave action got their family out of one dangerous situation -- I hope it also saves the family.

Would your children be brave enough to call 911 if you were being threatened?

Letter Telling Family to Euthanize Autistic Child Ruled Out as a Hate Crime

Penulis : Unknown on dinsdag 20 augustus 2013 | 16:49

dinsdag 20 augustus 2013

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

policeIn a letter that proves that there is pink paper in the depths of hell, a family of a teenager with autism was recently told to euthanize the 13-year-old or move out of their neighborhood. The typed letter that came from an anonymous neighbor of Maxwell Begley's family has gone viral, angering just about anyone who reads it. That includes the cops, who are trying to figure out what to do about the "pissed off mother" who sent the note.

For starters, if and when they find her, they won't be charging her with a hate crime.

It's too bad.

The letter is certainly full of hateful comments about the 13-year-old, from urging the Begleys to donate whatever “non-retarded body parts he possesses" to science to referring to noises the child makes when outside as "noise polluting whaling (sic)." But Durham Regional Police in the Begleys' hometown of Newcastle, Ontario, have reviewed the letter and determined the language doesn't qualify as a hate crime under Canadian statutes.

That's the bad news.

The good news is that the cops have taken the letter in as evidence, and they are trying to do something about it.

Criminal charges could come of this. Thank goodness.

Because a letter like that can't just make us mad. While that's all well and good in terms of increasing awareness of the discrimination and cruelty kids on the autism spectrum (and their families) encounter, Internet outrage isn't worth a whole lot. Throw in $1.50 and you might get a decent cup of coffee.

A letter like this crosses so many lines that it has to get the writer in real trouble, right? Otherwise, what's to keep them from doing it again?

Criminalizing behavior like this is the only sure way to prevent it from being repeated.

Frankly, it's hard to figure out the exact line between freedom of speech and harassing speech, and I'll admit I'm no expert on Canadian laws.

It's OK to hate on your neighbors from the privacy of your own home -- according to one survey, as many as 60 percent of people have admitted they don't get along with the folks next door. But you certainly don't take it beyond personal griping, and especially not in the form of a hate-filled screed about an innocent child.

It would seem to be criminal to have actually sent this letter to the family. This wasn't a letter someone wrote on their own computer, printed, then balled up and threw away. It wasn't even a rather inappropriate blog post.

This was a letter specifically sent to the Begley family. It was meant to hit them at home, on their own turf, where they should be able to feel safe, where Maxwell should be able to feel loved.

At the very least, the letter writer should be forced to do a little community service ... perhaps at a place that serves kids with special needs?

Check out the letter -- do you think it's criminal?

man walks in on father and wifeA former sheriff's deputy in Utah walked in on a scene that might as well have been straight out of a B-grade movie the other day. Timothy John 'TJ' Brewer walked in on his wife and his father having sex. Let that sink in a moment. This poor guy walked in on HIS wife (and the mother of his four children) on top of HIS father -- fire chief Wesley 'Corky' Brewer. Good Lord.

TJ reportedly went ballistic (um, of course he did), backhanded his wife, pistol-whipped his father, and then wanted to "finish the job," but before he could, Corky Brewer went home and stabbed himself, puncturing his lung and slicing his liver.

Honestly, it would be hard to imagine a different outcome. The details are just so, so sordid.

According to the reports, TJ was unable to find his wife and father after a dinner together that included drinking. When he went upstairs, he found his son's door locked. Somehow he got in and he found them. In bed together. IN HER SON'S ROOM.

I don't really care how bad your husband is, you just don't do this. With his father. In your child's room? I mean, I don't condone violence, but come on? What would you do? Can you even imagine the betrayal?

Soon after, according to police, he went out and got his gun and pointed it at his wife, who managed to somehow get it away from him and raced to her parents' house.

Now it's TJ Brewer who is paying the ultimate price. He was arrested and isn't allowed to speak to his wife or father, and his visits with his children must be supervised. His wife is saying she won't testify against him, which I guess is good. But still. Wow.

There are affairs and crimes of passion and then there is something like this. It's hard to imagine anything more upsetting than being betrayed by both your spouse and your parent at the same time. Whatever happens, this family is torn apart. What a sad, awful story.

Would you blame someone for being violent if they walked in on something like this?

5 Applause-Worthy Family Movie Night Snacks

FamilyThe following is a post from our sponsor, Netflix.

Family movie night is fun, even with store-bought snacks. But with recommendations from the Families page at Netflix readily available, you can use your saved time to prepare some super-tasty treats that go far beyond basic popcorn. Round up the crew, pick a movie and serve up some dramatically delicious fun!

1. Candy Explosion Chocolate Bark: Chop up a pound of your favorite chocolate and melt it in a heatproof bowl in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring after each, until completely smooth. Pour into a 13x9-inch baking pan or rimmed baking sheet that’s been lined with foil or parchment paper and sprinkle your kids’ favorite candies on top. (Go crazy! It’s more fun the more stuff you use.) Refrigerate at least an hour until set, then break into pieces and serve.

2. Super Sparkling Spritzer Station: Let kids customize their own fizzy drink by mixing together a variety of juices or fruit drinks (pear nectar, lemonade, and apple cider all work well) and plain or flavored seltzer. Serve in tall cups with fancy straws.

3. The-Sky’s-the-Limit Popcorn: Start with lots of plain popcorn (microwave or stove-top popped) and set out whatever mix-ins you want: mini pretzels, nuts, chocolate candies, gummy bears, the possibilities are endless! Give each person his or her own bowl to customize their own creation.

4. Hot Potato Chips: Scrub a few russet potatoes and slice crosswise into very thin rounds. Toss with some olive oil, salt, and pepper (or chopped herbs and garlic for more adventurous palates) and roast on a rimmed baking sheet in a preheated 450-degree oven for 15-20 minutes, turning once halfway through, until they’re golden brown and crispy. TIP: Spread them on a plate while they’re piping hot and top with finely shredded cheddar cheese and scallions for a cheese-fries effect.

5. Banana Bonanza Pops: Cut some slightly ripe bananas in half crosswise and insert a wooden stick into each cut end. Place on a plate or baking sheet in the freezer (not touching), cover with plastic wrap, and freeze for a few hours until solid. Melt some chopped chocolate (see #1, above) and pour it into a tall mug. One at a time, dip each banana in the chocolate (you can then coat them in chopped nuts, sprinkles, or anything else you want by rolling them on a plate of the chosen topping) and carefully transfer to a wax-paper-lined baking sheet or plate. You can eat these right away or freeze them to enjoy completely cold later.

What’s your family’s favorite movie-night snack?

Lea Michele and Cory Monteith's Family Go Through the Painful Steps of Saying Goodbye

Cory MonteithFor what feels like the thousandth time since I heard the sad news late Saturday, again I will say rest in peace to Cory Monteith. After the Glee actor's unexpected death Saturday, Monteith's cause of death was confirmed by the British Columbia Coroners Service as "mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol." Today, news comes out that Cory Monteith's body was cremated in Vancouver following a private viewing with his family and Lea Michele, his girlfriend.

One person not in attendance at the viewing? His estranged father Joe Monteith. Joe tells TMZ that he wasn't told about the cremation until after the fact. Apparently, Joe is "totally devastated" he didn't get to see his son a final time.

We don't know much about Cory's interactions with his father or the relationship between Cory's mother and father, post-divorce. What do we know? That handling an unexpected death is never easy, and Cory's is no exception.

Handling the loss of someone close to you is heartwrenching. When that loss comes at a time you least expect it, it's almost unbearable. It's clear with the pace of things that happened following Cory's unexpected passing that his family and Lea are really "in it," so to speak. They're going through the motions.

Plain and simple: During a difficult time like this, it's so hard to catch your brain and heart up to the unfathomable events at hand. Regardless of the fact that there's no way they're used to Cory being gone and probably won't be for some time, they were forced to face the process. I'm sure that the media circus surrounding Cory's death and the information about how he passed being so public doesn't make it easier for them. To Cory's family and so many of his fans, he will always be an amazing man, a talented man, and a man with a good heart.

My thoughts and prayers are with Cory's family and especially Lea Michele.

Are you still in shock over Cory's death?

Airman’s Plan to Surprise Each Family Member One at a Time Makes for Unforgettable Homecoming (VIDEO)

military homecomingWhat's better than one surprise military homecoming? A million military surprise homecomings. Instead of surprising just one family member when he returned home, an airman decided to surprise each of his family members -- including his dogs -- one by one. Okay, so there aren't a million surprises in this video, but there are a lot. And each one is better than the last. Why should one family member get all the fun?

Check out the beautiful and touching video:

Love this! I'm sure each and every one of these people were equally thrilled to see their long lost family member. So sweet that he treated them all the same and surprised everyone. Let's hope this starts a trend.

But I can't lie. I do think the dogs may have had the best reaction.

How great is this idea?
