Transgendered Professor Let Go From Christian University for Being a 'Distraction'

A professor at a California Christian University has finally found peace, but it comes at the cost of his job. H. Adam Ackley has been asked to step down from teaching theology and philosophy at Azusa Pacific University, because until this year, he was a she known as Heather Clements.

Ackley is in the third year of a five-year contract, but university officials have asked other teachers to take over his classes. He says the school has agreed to pay him through the end of the year, but not cover medical treatment for hormone therapy or “top surgery” through insurance.

Azusa apparently does not have an official policy on transgender issues, except to say, “Humans were created as gendered beings.”

Ackley said:

I did not get a sense directly from the individuals with whom I was speaking that they had a theological problem with transgender identity. I did get the message that it has to do with their concern that other people, such as donors, parents, and churches connected to the university will have problems not understanding transgender identity.

This is one of those tough situations that are becoming increasingly common in today’s culture. Ackley has struggled with gender-identity issues from childhood, and only made the switch this year after the American Psychiatric Association removed “gender identity disorder” from its list of mental illnesses. “This year has been a transition from being a mentally ill woman to being a sane, transgendered man,” he said.

While I applaud Ackley’s decision to live his life the way that he wants to, rather than conforming to societal or even religious norms, I also stand by Azuza Pacific’s right to ask him to step down. Agree with the decision or not, this is a private, religious school, and if they want their teachers to adhere to a particular code of conduct, then that’s their decision to make.

To force religious institutions to act in a way that is contrary to their beliefs tramples the First Amendment. One person’s right to his or her own lifestyle choices does not trump freedom of religion, even if a lot of people disagree with it. For example -- I love bacon cheeseburgers, but I’m not going to ask a kosher chef to make me one, even though I totally don’t understand how you can live a full life without knowing the insane deliciousness that is meat and cheese and bacon on a toasted bun with pickles.

Yes, H. Adam Ackley has every right to live as a man, and it seems like he’s already offering hope and inspiring others by being vocal about his faith and gender identity. But Azusa Pacific also has the right politely ask him to step down for making those lifestyle choices.

Ian Somerhalder Reveals How He Really Feels About Not Being Cast as Christian Grey

Ever since Ian Somerhalder was left in the dust by confirmation that Charlie Hunnam is going to be the big screen incarnation of Christian Grey, the Vampire Diaries' star's fans have been livid. Feeling downright brokenhearted and disappointed, they feel like they want justice to be served. Well, they may finally be able to cool their jets now that Ian has spoken out about how he truly feels about losing the coveted role ...

Speaking to HuffPost Live, Ian clarified that while he is "unbelievably grateful for all the support and all the cheering and the love" from fans who were campaigning for him to play Christian Grey, he's got enough on his plate already.

Ian elaborated, "I'm on a TV show that shoots 10 months a year." Furthermore, he says:

It's so funny, you read these blogs: 'Ian Somerhalder angry, livid he's not Christian Grey' -- I mean, no, no, no, there's none of that.

Whew! I don't know about you, but an enraged Ian Somerhalder is not someone I'd ever want to cross paths with! Eek! No, but seriously, good for him for setting the record straight -- and handling the situation in a mature, chill, professional way. I wouldn't be surprised if the guy's a bit bummed, but he gets major points -- from fans and Hollywood insiders alike -- for taking the disappointment like a man!

What's more, he's reminding fans they can see him as much as they want thanks to his existing gig with the CW! Plus, if rumors are true that he could end up cast as Gideon Cross in the upcoming small screen version of Sylvia Day's Crossfire novels, we'll get to see much, much more of him. Even more than if he had been cast as Christian Grey! And really, what could be better than that?

Being Cast as Christian Grey Is Already Turning Charlie Hunnam's Life Upside Down

Charlie Hunnam may have yet to start shooting Fifty Shades of Grey but he's already being treated like Hollywood royalty. Apparently, Universal Pictures has supplied the up-and-coming mega-star with his very own "handful of bodyguards." Uh, whaaa?!

What's next, his very own bulletproof limousine? Air Force Fifty? Eesh. It's not like the guy was just elected to public office, so what's with the amped-up security? Well, reportedly, the studio is concerned that people are going to try to swarm the poor guy -- some reports say Hunnam is already being followed by fans hoping to score his John Hancock -- so the bodyguards are meant to prevent keep the adoring crowds in line. Whoa.

And it's not just hearsay. The Hollywood Reporter notes that extra security was hired for the 33-year-old during FX's Sept. 7 Anarchy premiere in Hollywood, and it was definitely funded by Universal -- NOT FX.

In other words, the studio is doing all that they can to keep their leading man safe and comfortable amid this overnight onslaught of attention. Aww! OR they're pulling this as a publicity stunt?! You know, fake it 'til you make it. Pretend the hype is at a certain level ... until it ACTUALLY IS. OMG, crazy.

Either way, I worry this could eaaaaasily go to Charlie's head! The guy hasn't even read his first official line in front of Sam Taylor-Johnson's camera, and he has bodyguards. Oof. Thankfully, from what we know so far, Charlie seems like he can take the heat ... Which I'm sure is one of the reasons Universal brought him on-board in the first place.

Charlie Hunnam Confesses How He Really Feels About Playing Christian Grey (VIDEO)

Charlie Hunnam may be on top of the world right now having just nabbed the gig that could catapult him to superstardom, but he also seems to realize that with great power comes great responsibility. Ha ha, yes, the POWER -- and responsibility -- of playing Christian Grey!

The handsome actor recently spoke with On the Red Carpet about how he hopes he can do the character justice considering just how attached to him fans have grown. And believe me when I tell you that if you haven't yet warmed up to the idea of him playing Christian, this could be the gamechanger ...

Explaining where he was coming from when he was first approached and later cast for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie, Charlie said:

You know, I wasn't familiar with the material. I obviously knew of it, but I hadn't read the books myself and I was approached by the director, Samantha Taylor-Johnson, and she talked to me at great length about her intention and what she hoped to do with this film and it just got me really, really excited when I read the book. As the process progressed and it became clear that they wanted me to do it, it was just really exciting and a great honor to be entrusted with bringing this character to life. ... I mean, he's such a -- you know, he became part of the zeitgeist. He's such a loved, you know, character that's it's a real honor to be entrusted with him.

"A great honor"?! "Entrusted"?! Awww! See what I mean?! He's thoroughly, adorably grateful and seems to understand it's a really big deal that he was cast ... even if he wasn't super-familiar with the books.

He elaborated on the drawbacks of stepping into the beloved, mercurial billionaire's shoes:

I mean of course, a little bit of pressure. With literature and properties that are so well known, everybody has their own vision, you know, literature is so subjective, so that you come into it you create, as a reader, as an audience member, the character in one's own mind. So I'm never going to satisfy everyone's vision of who this guy is, but I do know and feel really confident that I have a strong take on who he is, who I think he is and can bring him to life in a really fun and exciting way.

Fun and exciting?! Whoa. Christian's never sounded hotter. This to me is the best proof yet that Charlie's going to win our hearts as the leading man. Sign me up! Really, it is no wonder Brad Pitt is backing Charlie has a whipsmart, stand-up, talented guy! He sure sounds like it to me.

Parents Found Guilty of Killing Adopted Daughter Despite Their 'Christian' Excuse

Religion is no excuse for killing your child. That's the message that abusive parents Larry and Carri Williams got when they were found guilty of first-degree manslaughter when they let their adopted child, Hana, die in their backyard from starvation and hypothermia after reportedly following tactics outlined in a Christian parenting book called To Train Up a Child. Hey, just because you label something Christian doesn't mean it is. What's that saying? Lipstick on a pig is still a pig. And beating and starving your child is not Christian.

Hana was adopted from Ethiopia and believed to be about 13 years old. Hana was forced to stay in the couple's backyard -- apparently as part of cruel parenting rules that the couple got from the book. She died of hypothermia aggravated by gastritis and malnutrition. Her body was rail thin, covered in bruises, her head was shaved and lumpy, and she had evidence of physical abuse.

The Williams' defense team called this "questionable parenting practices" and said they didn't necessarily equate to a crime.

WRONG.

Horrifyingly, the couple had seven other children in their home -- all have since been removed. One of their other adopted children, Immanuel, testified that the couple beat them with belts and switches. As punishment, they were hosed down, forced to sleep in closets, and made to listen to the Bible on tape and Christian music.

The level of hypocrisy here is obscene. Christianity, like all major religions, is founded on principles of love, caring, forgiveness, and treating others as you would like to be treated. Unfortunately, religion is often perverted and those basic tenets are bent and twisted into something grotesque and far from the original idea behind them.

Religion is never an excuse for abandoning your critical thinking, compassion, and basic humanity. And the justice system recognized this. You don't get to kill someone and then say, "These were just my ways of parenting." You don't get to torture someone and say, "That's my religion."

Mankind's basic religion is kindness and do unto others. Anything that deviates from that is just perversion of religion. Unfortunately, all of this comes too late for Hana. But her death allowed the other seven children living in this hellhole to escape.

Ever since the world learned Fifty Shades of Grey would become a movie, it seems like all of Hollywood -- from the most feted A-listers down to the lowliest D-listers and below -- have commented on whether or not they'd be interested in being cast. And despite being a bit beyond playing a 21-year-old at this point, Jennifer Love Hewitt recently threw her hat in the ring. 

Likely asked how she'd feel about vying for the lead role, the Client List actress gushed, "Oh my god, I would love to play Anastasia. It would be awkward now ... [but] I won't be pregnant forever. This would be a dream role. I'd love to do it. The books are so naughty. I love them!" Ha! But come on ... let's be real here. JLove's not a realistic contender ... However, the man she wants to play Christian may still be!

Jennifer told EnStarz, "I heard they were throwing around Ian Somerhalder. He would be a great Christian!"

Oh wow, she's a woman after MANY Fifty Shades fans' own hearts, huh? She seems to be thinking exactly the same way as a whole legion of Ian backers! Not that Fifty Shades producers are necessarily taking casting tips from JLove, but that's still a ringing endorsement for Ian from a veteran in the biz! 

At this point, his actual chances at nabbing the coveted gig seem slim ... But with so many people -- showbiz insiders and devoted fans -- on Team Ian, I wouldn't be surprised if he lands another role (like Gideon Cross in Sylvia Day's Crossfire TV series?!) that makes many women very, very pleased.

Thoughts on JLove's comments? You can't see her as Ana, right? But do you love her for naming Ian?!

¿Christian Cooke podría volverse Christian Grey?Suena como película cincuenta Shades of Grey ejecutivos es sloooowly, pero seguramente clavado hacia abajo del bastidor para los papeles protagónicos. Aunque hemos oído a principios de semana que Dakota Johnson podría ser el primer candidato para jugar Anastasia Steele, fuentes dicen variedad que hay en realidad tres otras actrices en la mezcla: Alicia Vikander (de Anna Karenina), ImogenPoots (una actriz británica con considerable currículum) y actual "It" del Hollywood chica Shailene Woodley.

Cuando se trata de fundición Gris de Christian, el actor que eventualmente se llevará la parte necesita algunas cualidades: tiene que ser sexy, seguro. Tiene que ser un poco peligroso. '50 Shades of Grey' Casting Is Almost Finished: Could These Stars Be Our Christian and Ana? (PHOTOS)

If you were to tweet at E.L. James today asking about Fifty Shades of Grey movie casting news, you'd probably still receive a snarky response about how they're still far off from making any sort of "final decision." And I'm sure that is probably still true. However, the latest buzz from a believable source leads us to believe that they're VERY close. So close in fact that we may have our Christian and Ana soon after Labor Day!

According to entertainment biz site TheWrap.com, casting is expected to wrap up within the next month, because filming needs to begin this fall. That's BIG -- huge! That means we're so close! And while they note that numerous people for both lead roles are under consideration, two names are floating around as very likely contenders: Dakota Johnson as Ana and Charlie Hunnam as Christian.   

You may remember Dakota as the cute co-ed who wakes up next to Justin Timberlake's Sean Parker in The Social Network. She also starred in the 21 Jump Street flick, The Five-Year Engagement, and the short-lived sitcom Ben and Kate. You may also know her as Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson's daughter!

As for Charlie ... well, he seems to have come out of the blue! The British actor starred as Jackson Teller in the FX series Sons of Anarchy and as Raleigh Becket in the film Pacific Rim. He's very Brad Pitt/Chris Hemsworth-ish. See?

Very BLONDE ... As is Dakota, usually, which isn't going to fly at least in the case of Ana, who is definitely brunette. But she's clearly dyed her hair for roles before (see above), and I'm sure Charlie would too.

Looks aside, I'm not sure if I see these two as our Ana and Christian ... But it's also hard to say, because they're both relatively "new," fresh, which is exactly what the casting directors want, it seems. In fact, TheWrap.com notes that Dakota fits the description the Fifty Shades folks have been looking for: 23, not quite a movie star (yet), acting credibility, and a rising feature career. But surely, she's not the only one up for the part and for whom those attributes apply. Still, it sounds like we won't have to wonder for much longer who will ultimately land the roles!

Fans que han tenido sus ojos sobre Ian Somerhalder jugar Christian gris en Cincuenta tonos de gris de próximo año película pronto tendrá que enfrentar tanto buenas y malas noticias... Es ya no está en tener el papel de Buzz persiste, al parecer porque E.L. James no podía verlo como cristiano. Pero confiad, Ian fans, porque otro autor podría estar buscando que sea su protagonista igualmente sexy...

Se rumorea que Sylvia día imaginado Ian como perfecta para la dominante Gideon Cruz, que podría ser una noticia increíble para el actor, porque Lionsgate recientemente adquirió los derechos de la serie del libro ... Y una serie de televisión basada en el libro viene pronto!

En otras palabras, podríamos terminar viendo Ian en un papel grisáceo supersexy, cristiano todo el tiempo. Ian Somerhalder is at it again: posting sexy photos and writing cryptic posts that don’t flat-out scream, “I’m the perfect Christian Grey!!” but certainly strongly hint at it. Take the latest batch, for instance -- which are, um, intriguing to say the least.

This first photo shows how he's thanking his fans, proving in a slightly passive aggressive way how insanely popular he is. Is he trying to show how much of a fan base he has to campaign for the Christian Grey role? Deflect the rumors that he’s out of the running and all this work he’s done has been for naught? Show once and for all that he’s WAY over Nina Dobrev? Or is he just trying to show off how plump and gorgeous his lips are (at first I thought he was wearing pink lipstick)? Such haunting questions to keep Fifty Shades fans up at night ...

And here's the other photo he recently snapped:

Whoa, right? He captioned this one with: "Another boys night-uh oh... Having longggg discussions with my cosmic brother Miles about massive change in our world. Fighting for change!"

Such a strange photo, don't you think? But if those are indeed Ian's arms, um, hello biceps! He's definitely got the whole hot body thing down if he's really hoping to be cast as Christian Grey. Because I could stare at those things all damn day.

Anyway, perhaps this is his way of showing all of us that he really doesn't care about the Fifty Shades casting rumors. He's out there doing his own thing and enjoys posting these photos on Instagram for all of us to drool over. But I don't think any Team Ian fans will rest until an official announcement is made.

Honestly, though it's driving the rest of us crazy, these photos show he isn't all that bothered. He's obviously got almost four million followers, has been enjoying single life with his boys, and makes us write entire posts on two innocuous photographs. What can't this man do?

Needless to say, if they don't cast Ian, who seems to be loving life and his millions of fans at the moment, they better find a complete unknown who is equally hot. I for one can't wait for the reaction when word about who is finally cast gets out. The Internet will be so much fun that day. But, seriously, it better be soon before we all implode from Fifty Shades casting rumors overload.

'50 Shades of Grey' Casting Call for Christian and Anastasia Is ON!

Whooo! We are ONE STEP closer to finding out who will play Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in next summer's Fifty Shades of Grey movie!!! Universal Pictures is announcing that they're seeking male and female actors for the lead roles, according to The Inquistr. The casting director has reportedly reviewed submissions sent by agents and have now put out a casting call to the general public, with hopes of finding the perfect Christian and Ana.

Innnnteresting and oh so exciting! But it also raises more questions than it answers. Like does this mean that some of the "usual suspects" are definitely out? And what about the other gossip floating around that E.L. James may have recently met with a top contender to play Christian?

Apparently, the author recently left LA following an extended stay there. Sources claim the trip could have been connected to casting. And others are taking it one step further by saying that Erika was actually talking to actor (and one fan favorite for the part) Jessie Pavelka during her stay, because he's already been awarded the coveted part!

The two did tweet to one another on July 30. "At LAX... looking forward to going home and seeing @noghar," E.L. James wrote on her Twitter account, while Pavelka tweeted, "Leaving LA. A productive and fun trip. I shall see you again soon." Soon? Oh really?

Still, it sounds like nothing's in the bag as of right now. Not even the release date, which was initially reported as August 1, but has also been referred to as August 5 and August 24! And honestly, if they don't cast this thing ASAP, I wouldn't get my hopes up for any of the above!

It's a sad day, friends. Or, at least, I think it's a sad day. There's a rumor going around, saying that not only will Ian Somerhalder not be playing Christian Grey, but that he's salty about it and snapped at paparazzi when asked about what happened. I'm sort of inclined to not believe this type of poppycock, as every day someone new is thrown into the ol' Fifty Shades of Grey casting pool. But Ian's answer to the paparazzi is a little odd. And there's video proof.

Maybe there's some truth to this, guys? Hold me, I'm scared.

Clearly, he's joking with his "Jim Carrey" comment, but Ian does seem less than thrilled when Fifty Shades is brought up. Sure, it could be the fact that there are 73 photographers in his face, snapping away and asking obnoxious questions when he's just trying to get the hell out of the airport, but "I don't know, man, you tell me" could be misconstrued as being perturbed at the question.

Then again, maybe Ian's just being cagey, as any good Christian contender would do? Maybe he's simply playing it close to the vest? Maybe, just maybe, he was already cast in the role and has been sworn to secrecy?

I like that better. So let's just go with that, kthnxbai.

Move Over Christian Grey: Sexy 'Star Wars' Casting Is Heating Up

I don't tend to think of Star Wars as being an inherently sexy movie series, but then again, who among us didn't lust over Han Solo and his bitchin' holster belt? Obi-Wan took on a far more appealing vibe when Ewan McGregor assumed the role during the prequel trilogy. And I'd wager almost every guy of a certain age harbors a secret fantasy involving Princess Leia and her metal bikini.

It remains to be seen if J.J. Abrams' highly-anticipated sequel, Star Wars: Episode VII, will live up to geeky expectations ... but oddly enough it's sounding like the seventh installment in the franchise is shaping up to have something in common with a certain other movie that's been building up a lot of buzz lately.

Namely, Fifty Shades of Grey.

Okay, I'm not saying the new Star Wars will feature vaginal pleasure balls or that Abrams is going to swap out the iconic "May the Force be with you" phrase for "Laters, baby." I'm saying that the casting fervor around Episode VII is getting to be on par with the Fifty Shades rumor-mongering.

First there were murmurs that Jonathan Rhys-Meyer was in the running, then we heard that Leonardo DiCaprio took a meeting to discuss his potential involvement, and then the Internet BLEW THE EFF UP when Ryan Gosling was linked to the role of Luke Skywalker's son. 

Sadly for everyone whose panties instantly incinerated at the thought of Ryan Gosling doing that rad "these aren't the droids you're looking for" thing, his rep has dismissed the reports as "not true."

The other dreamy-eyed Hollywood hunk who's supposedly a top Star Wars contender is ... drumroll ... Zac Efron. As in, the same guy who's been batted around as a potential Christian Grey, to the point of fan-created trailers that cast him with Kirsten Dunst as Anastasia. (Wha?)

Rumors aside, there's no way to know who's REALLY in talks to join the Star Wars cast, and tight-lipped Abrams likely won't confirm anything until he's good and ready. All we can be sure about so far is that Episode VII will pick up after the events in The Return of the Jedi, and it's set to be released in 2015.

Meanwhile, there's nothing to do but speculate. Get ready for the onslaught of hot male celebs being alternately associated with handcuffs -- and light sabers.

As if we need more convincing that Ian Somerhalder would be the perfect Christian Grey, recent news about his bedroom preferences confirms it! In an interview with Women's Health, the Vampire Diaries star opens up about what gets him hot and bothered. You won't believe what his biggest, sexiest turn-ons are.

As all his diehard fans are aware, Ian and Nina Dobrev recently ended their romance and now we may know why. According to the smoldering star, he has pretty specific criteria when it comes to the way a woman seduces him. "With dancing," he revealed. "When someone can dance or you have rhythm with someone, it's really sexy."

Another lust must? When it comes to lingerie, he prefers it "off, crumpled up on the floor." Wow! Sounds fantastic, if you ask me. This makes me feel more sorry for Nina than I did before. Perhaps she couldn’t cut it or meet Ian's incredibly sexy standards. Her loss.

Not that the split hasn't been hard for him too. He also talked about using various methods to get over a heartbreak. "There are a million ways to handle it," he explained. "You have wine, you have exercise, you have meditation, you have friends. You know, friends can be your meditation."

But boy, doesn't his bedroom confession make him an even better candidate to star in the big screen version of Fifty Shades of Grey? Could this guy get any hotter, sexier, and in command. HELLO! If he doesn't land that role, it will be a huge casting mistake.

OK, so for all we know, maybe there really is no frontrunner for the lead roles of hotty McHotstuff Christian Grey and his lovely Anastasia Steele (just yet). But considering the Fifty Shades of Grey movie release date is a little over the year away on August 1, 2014, they've GOTTA start filming someone soon!
