Baby Veronica Handed Back to Adoptive Parents But Is This Right?

Baby Veronica, the adorable curly-haired 4-year-old who has been at the center of one of the country's most contentious custody battles, has reportedly been handed over to her adoptive parents, Matt and Melanie Capobianco. The couple had been fighting to get back custody of the little girl they adopted ever since, at 27 months old, she was taken away from them and handed back to her father, Dusten Brown, a member of Cherokee Nation. Veronica's birth mother put the girl up for adoption while she was still pregnant. The mother and her fiance at the time, Dusten, began arguing and cut off communication with each other, but apparently not before Dusten text messaged her that he gave up his parental rights. Courts would later say this is not binding. At any rate, very shortly after Veronica's birth, Dusten began fighting it.

The legalities of what happened here are complex and there are plenty who side with Dusten, plenty with the Capobiancos. But I can't help wondering what it is going to be like for a little girl who has now lived with her biological father and his family for two years to suddenly be wrested away from them.

She does not understand legalities. Adults can barely understand them.

At least from what media reports were showing, Veronica was blossoming in her home and doing well. I certainly understand that having raised her from the time she was an infant, the adoptive parents must have been a tremendous bond with her and simply wanted their little girl back.

But in a country with so many fathers who slack off on their parental duties, or who don't even do them at all, here we have a man who is willing to do anything to keep his little girl. Should that not be commended and rewarded somehow?

No word on whether the adoptive parents will even let him visit. It would be understandable that they'd have some negative feelings toward him and not want him having a relationship with her. But how is she going to feel about all of this when she's old enough to understand it -- old enough to understand that she had a father who wanted her, wanted her badly, and she was taken away from him? Something about this doesn't sit right.

There are so many children in the world who aren't wanted at all. I'm going to ask the obvious question as to whether or not the Capobiancos could have found it in themselves to let go of Veronica and to find another little girl or boy who desperately needed a home.

It will be interesting to see what kind of relationship Veronica has with her parents when she's older.

What do you think of this decision?

4 Ways to Tell if Natural Childbirth Is Right for You

newborn babyIf you're pregnant and curious about natural childbirth, it's easy to walk away from all the beautiful birthing stories thinking that natural is the only way to go. But is it? Some of the crunchiest moms I know will admit it's not for everyone. If you're thinking about attempting natural childbirth, you have to get past all the idealism and politics and take a good hard look at reality. There's your aspirations, and then there's you, with all your life experiences, your circumstances, your strengths, and your limitations.

Lots of women plan on natural labor only to change their minds and get that epidural after all. Plenty of other women plan on being medicated and then deliver so quickly there's no time. Labor is unpredictable like that. But if you want to try out natural childbirth, there's a few questions you need to ask yourself.

1. How do you feel about your body being out of your control? The fewer interventions you have, the more control you're handing over to your body's own natural processes. That may sound great, especially when people say things like "trust the wisdom of your own body." But it can be terrifying. Think of all the other times you have not been in full control of your body. How did that feel? Scary or thrilling? Of course, the idea that you're in full control even with a medicated birth can still be total fiction -- but it still feels different.

2. How do you handle pain, really? How soon do you reach for meds when you have a headache? Try holding a cube of ice in your palm. How long do you last? As long as the average contraction? Because a contraction is going to be a hell of a lot more intense and painful.

3. Do you have time to train? For best results, you really do need to actively prepare for natural childbirth. You should prepare for any childbirth, actually. But going unmedicated works best when you can work with a doula, midwife, or labor coach beforehand and really learn techniques for managing pain and working with your body. It's not necessarily as intuitive as you'd think.

4. Do you have the right support team? You're going to need your significant other to be on board. And you're going to need your midwife, labor nurse, doctor, any anyone else helping you to be supportive of an unmedicated labor. It takes a lot of support.

By the way, as far as I'm concerned, any labor that results in a baby is "natural." So however your baby arrives in this world, you should feel proud of yourself.

How else can women find out if natural childbirth is right for them?

Kanye West ‘Rants’ About Making Good Music and Not Caring About the Money -- Right On! (VIDEO)

kanye westOh God, this headline again? Kanye West Another Epic Rant He's Crazy, bla! Bla! Bla! So he's had a few angry outbursts at the paparazzi. So he's proclaimed himself God a time or two. I'm sure he meant that metaphorically, and anyway, at least he's never boring. But it's gotten to the point now where any time Kanye says anything with passion, we have to go and call it a rant. Like this speech he gave at a listening party in Brooklyn. Okay, he's shouting, and he admits he's just had some Grey Goose. But it's not a rant. It's a sermon, people! Can't you tell he's preaching? Let's hear what he has to say.

To summarize, don't just make music for money. Make good music out of love and you'll turn out your best work. Don't be a sellout. Putting numbers on the back of a shirt makes for inferior design. Camouflage prints are so over.

Okay, he lost me with the numbers on shirts bit. And yeah, that part about making money is a bit rich coming from someone who's gotten, you know, rich off making music. But I get his point. Kanye has a history of struggling with record companies to protect his artistic vision. Maybe he's overly intense and his behavior is often inappropriate, but my sense is that he's totally sincere about trying to make the best music he possibly can and not caring as much about what's going to sell or be a huge hit.

Anyway, you know if this were a clean-cut white guy in a button-up yelling on an actual wooden soapbox at a country club luncheon in a romantic comedy, people would be up on their chairs clapping. "W00T Skip (as played by Ryan Reynolds) you tell it to your stuffy corporate lawyer father-in-law!" But it's Kanye, so we have to dismiss him as a drunken clown. All he's doing here is encouraging his fellow artists to do their best work.

What do you think of Kanye's speech, rant, whatever this is?

An Unexpected Enemy Tries to Take Down Tamra Barney Right Before Her Wedding (VIDEO)

Last night was CRAZY in Reality TV land!! Did you watch?? First, on Tamra’s OC Wedding, the bride was nearly burned at the stake. Add to that a swinging cake, a ballooning budget, REALLY bad behavior on the groom’s part, and a family feud.

But that was just the tip of the over-the-top drama!

You may remember on the last season of The Real Housewives of Orange County, Tamra Barney filmed a tear-jerker scene with her mother, going over childhood trauma and asking her mother why she never says, “I love you.” The mom was horrified, of course, but they talked it out. Fast forward to the filming of this wedding spinoff and all hell has broken loose. In fact, this time Tamra’s entire extended family is about to kill her. This is what happens when estranged family members see something on television they don’t like, or are embarrassed by. Tamra’s lucky they didn’t set her hair on fire!

Over on The Real Housewives of Miami, the biggest star of the night was a caged panther that should have been allowed to break out of its cage and eat those outrageously catty cast members. The Lea Black backstabbing was brutal. Or perhaps I’m just upset because Lauren Foster stole my line. Or tried to. "Thug in a Ferragamo" doesn’t have quite the same ring as "Thug in a Cocktail Dress," does it?

That wasn't the only guffaw. Guess what fatal mistakes I spotted last night? One was the result of sloppy production and, the other, a Miami cast member making a really bad choice. It’s true what they say, in real life as well as on reality TV, that if you sit on the fence, you get nothing but a pole up your a**. So who’s guilty of this crime? Watch my exclusive video to find out!

Lamar Odom’s Strange Nighttime Activities Make Us Wonder if He’s All Right (VIDEO)

by Adriana Velez 15 hours ago

lamar odomSo maybe you have more important things to think about -- in fact, I hope you do. But here at The Stir, we've been worried about Lamar Odom. Last week, when Khloe couldn't find him, we joked that Lamar was the new Where's Waldo. It was all shits and giggles until someone said, "I'm just afraid he's going to be found somewhere, dead from an OD." Ooh, downer. No one wishes that for Lamar, no matter what he's done. Well, to our great relief he's very much alive. Photographers snapped Lamar walking around downtown LA late, late last night. But is he all right? It's hard to tell.

Around 10 p.m. Lamar chatted and posed for photos with fans at his apartment building. Shortly after midnight he was seen stopping by a sushi restaurant (but not staying), and then strolling to a deli where he bought a banana. He ate the banana on his way back to his apartment. Then he left again around 3:15 a.m., got into someone's car, and returned to his apartment building around 6 a.m.

So, eating a banana is pretty normal. Guy's got the late-night munchies, and he made a healthy choice. It's not exactly crackhead behavior, but it is odd that he went someplace at 3 in the morning. Could be a hot club, could be a booty call, could be anything. He may have just had a restless night. But whatever is going on, we're just glad to see him alive and looking well. As his wife Khloe would say, "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." And if you ask him yourself, as one pap did, he'll tell you, "Life is good."

Lamar does kind of seem at loose ends, though. His marriage appears to be unraveling, and he's caught in a whirlpool of rumors about drug use and prostitutes. Can you blame a guy for not being able to sleep at night?

Do you think Lamar is on drugs, or just haunted by the turmoil in his life?

Rapist Who Killed Mom and Daughters Says Prison Isn't Treating Him Right

The man sentenced to death for raping and killing a mother and her two daughters in a horrific home invasion and arson in Connecticut has already done the unfathomable -- so I guess it's no real surprise that he would take his sociopathic personality to even higher heights. Triple-murderer Steven Hayes is now suing his prison for "harassment and psychological torture." Oh man, dude, seriously? WTF? Yes, Steven Hayes, who robbed, then raped and strangled mom Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and then burned her two young daughters alive in a house fire (all while Dr. William Petit was tied up in the basement), feels that he's being denied his "basic human needs" while he's on death row.

In his first interview, Hayes told the New Haven Register:

Nobody’s supposed to be treated the way we’re treated here. I was sentenced to death, not psychological torment.

Oh, boo hoo. I don't think too many people would feel sorry for this sad excuse for a human being.

Hayes also opened up about why he committed such a heinous crime, saying, basically, that he "doesn't know." He said:

I just wanted money. That’s all I was looking for ... But that’s when Josh [his partner in the crime] told me about him and the girl [11-year-old Michaela, who was raped] ... I started to lose it. Then I looked out the window and saw an unmarked police car. And I just snapped.

Hayes, though he sounds remorseful, is still casting blame. He blames his crime partner and fellow death row member Josh Komisarjevsky for escalating things. He blames him for starting the fire. Asked about allegations by his younger brothers that he abused them as children, he says they've got it all wrong. He even casts some blame on his father, for leaving him when he was a child.

He also pats himself on the back for "being nice" to the Petits while he held them hostage for seven hours, and insists it was only in the last "couple of minutes," when they were being raped and murdered, that things got ugly.

And now he's suing because he should be treated better.

But he also said:

I don’t deserve to live. I don’t want to live.

He should have stopped talking right there. Hayes is suing for $500,000. Something tells me it'll be a subzero day in hell before he gets that money.

Can you believe this guy?

Robert Pattinson Won't Replace Kristen Stewart Until the Time Is Exactly Right

AppId is over the quota

Robert PattinsonSurprise, sur-freakin'-prise -- apparently Robert Pattinson isn't ready to date after splitting from Kristen Stewart, according to a supposed friend of his. (Don't you love how celebs' "friends" are always speaking on their behalf? What the heck?)

The source says, "Rob has absolutely no interest in dating anyone right now. His number one priority is music and movies." And oh yeah, this person also admits that "Rob likes to flirt," which proves he's exactly who we think he is -- a dude who just got out of a long-term relationship and has absolutely no intention of being tied down to one woman again anytime soon.

Translation -- (how do I put this politely ...) he wants to get with as many chicks as he can before venturing into serious girlfriend territory again.

But honestly, can you blame him? He's a guy. And he's only 27. If there's any time in his life when he should go out there and sow his wild oats and get the casual hookup thing out of his system -- it's now.

What would the point be of limiting his options when he obviously has so many to choose from? He really missed out on dipping into the dating pool for all those years he was shacking up with Kristen. He might as well get his feet wet and find out what he really wants in a woman before settling down again.

It's almost like he's doing everything backwards compared to most men his age. In his early 20s, he was practically married. Now he's "divorced" and ready to go to college and become a frat daddy and add a few notches to his belt (in the most respectable way possible) before graduating, entering his 30s, and deciding he's ready to give the wife and kids thing a whirl.

And then when he hits 40 he can turn around and have an affair with Kristen and start the process all over again. (Get in line now, ladies.)

Do you think it's a good idea for Rob to stay single for a while?

Singer of The Calling Reports Horrifying and Bloody Kidnapping Right Before Comeback (VIDEO)

Alex BandSometimes when you're watching a violent movie and some guy gets abducted, put in a van, beaten up, and then left on the street to die, you are entertained but thankful this actually doesn't happen in real life. But this scary scenario just happened to Alex Band of The Calling, the band with that famous hit from 2001, "Wherever You Will Go." (Is it just me or does that song remind you of Love Actually every time you hear it?) The band has been on a "hiatus" since 2005, but were reportedly set to announce a comeback.

Poor Alex was in Lapeer, Michigan for a music festival and walked from his hotel to a mini mart early Sunday morning, around 4 a.m.

And that's when his nightmare began. Luckily Alex survived, but it sure sounds like he had quite the ordeal, and hopefully the two guys who did this to him will soon be brought to justice.

TMZ reports that two men in a blue minivan pulled up right next to Alex and they proceed to pick him up right off of the street. They beat him up, robbed him, and dumped him on some train tracks close by.

Holy crap, can you even imagine? Eventually, another member of the band noticed that Alex was missing, so he had a search party assembled. They found him a short time later, bruised and bloody. It hasn't been reported what exactly was taken from Band yet -- but one would think that perhaps the physical and emotional recovery after an ordeal like this may take a greater toll than the monetary one.

And now TMZ has released the 911 call that Alex's manager made when he found the 32-year-old singer. Take a listen:

So scary and crazy, right? Even scarier is that it sounds like Alex had no idea who the assailants were and this whole attack was completely random. You'd think that those few minutes in that van were most likely the scariest moments of Alex's life. Poor guy!

Let's hope whoever is responsible for this attack is caught so there will be no other victims. No one deserves to be abducted while innocently walking down the street on their way to the mini mart! And our thoughts and prayers are with Alex for a speedy recovery.

Feel free to take a walk down memory lane with The Calling's "Wherever You Will Go":

la fisheria houston It's not a mortgage or a car payment, but eating out at a nice restaurant is an investment -- in the food and a relaxing experience, which entails not having to worry about doing the dishes. Or loud, screaming, running kids. Still, it's rare to find a restaurant where you'll be guaranteed to be free of the latter. Unless you're dining at one Houston, Texas restaurant called La Fisheria, which recently announced that patrons must be over 8 years old after 7 p.m.

After receiving a number of complaints from regular customers, Mexican reality TV star and executive chef Aquiles Chavez said he had to make the "tough" conclusion to enforce the rule. He explains, "We find children that are crying, some kids running under tables, and our customers don’t like [it]. Seven o’clock is not a time for children, especially when we serve drinks and wine."

Tonight is the first night the policy will be enforced, and of course, there's already been backlash against it.

Those who oppose the policy believe families should be allowed to eat together. Womp womp. It's not like the restaurant is discouraging that on the whole. They're just saying that after a certain, appropriate time, younger kids aren't allowed in a fine dining atmosphere that's attempting to cater to an adult crowd. What's the big deal?

Really, I don't see how this is any different than a couple saying "no kids allowed" at their late Saturday night black tie wedding or a bar enforcing an age restriction. Time and place, people. There are many family-friendly or kid-centric spots where parents know they can bring their little ones and enjoy together time. So La Fisheria is just trying to offer the flipside of that -- a place where adults are able to go and have a peaceful, relaxing dinner without having to worry about bored, tired kids throwing a temper tantrum at the booth behind theirs.

Thankfully, the restaurant is getting a lot of support for the controversial decision, as well. Chavez said that even some people initially opposed to the idea warmed up to it. He told local news station KHOU, "When we explain, they say you’re right, at the end of the day, you’re thinking of us." True! I wish even more restaurants would do the same!

What do you think about this policy?

I think it's going to be a nightmare for them to enforce. If a family comes in to eat at 6:30, are they going to box up their food and kick them out? Plus I think it's a stupid rule anyway. Where are these resterants where children are running wild and babies are crying non stop? Because I got out and I've seen a child running around once ever, and rarely hear other people's children.

Honestly, I think anyone who would have such a policy probably doesn't have a very kid-friendly restaurant at any time.  I think if a restaurant in my area had this policy I would steer clear of it entirely.

I wish more places would do this. I once worked at a place that banned all kids under 12 from the patio area. That pissed a bunch of people off, but there were more people who appreciated it than people who hated it. Sorry, not everyone wants to listen to hissy fits and loud kids while sipping a margarita on a hot day.
