Mother Serving 20 Years for Firing ‘Warning Shot’ Gets New Chance at Freedom

Marissa Alexander, the young mother who was sentenced to a 20-year jail term for firing a "warning shot" near her ex-husband in what she claimed was self-defense, has been ordered to receive a new trial. Alexander became the subject of much support after George Zimmerman was not arrested after killing Trayvon Martin because of Florida's "Stand Your Ground" defense. He later went to trial, but was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges. Many thought it was unfair that Zimmerman did not go to jail for killing an unarmed black teen, while a black woman was in jail for not killing anyone. Now she might have her shot at going free.

It all started when Marissa and her ex-husband, Rico Gray, began arguing in their Florida home. Gray had accused her of cheating and questioning whether he was the father of their 1-week-old child. Rico reportedly had a history of abusing Marissa, who had once been hospitalized at his hands. She filed a restraining order.

During the argument, Gray ran out to her car and retrieved a gun, which she was licensed to carry. She returned to the house, carrying the gun at her side. She claimed that when Rico saw it, he charged her and threatened to kill her, so she fired a shot, missing Gray and his two young sons, who were also in the house.

A judge dismissed Marissa's "Stand Your Ground" contention because she had originally left the house -- which ended any potential deadly conflict. Marissa, however, claims she couldn't get out of the garage and had no choice but to re-enter the house. (Even after the shooting, Marissa and Gray were still in contact and had yet another physical confrontation, this time with Gray ending up the battered one.)

The judge also said he was stymied by the state's mandatory "10-20-Life" sentencing rules -- in this case, the 20 years that Marissa received. Now, however, the judge says that the jury was not instructed correctly -- that it wasn't that Marissa had to prove she acted in self-defense, but that the prosecution had to prove she did not.

Yeah, it gets kind of tricky.

I'm not so sure things that things will go better for Marissa this time -- but it does seem unfair that in a world where people routinely get off with almost nothing for vehicular manslaughter, Marissa is serving a life sentence for a bullet that killed no one. Especially considering that she had ample reason to be scared of Gray.

I'm not saying she doesn't deserve something -- but 20 years is excessive. If she does get another chance at freedom, I hope she doesn't blow it by getting back into that toxic relationship!

Do you think she deserves another trial?

Woman Gets Letter and Purple Heart of Father She Never Met 70 Years Later (VIDEO)

purple heart medal in handAfter seven decades, a letter from a World War II veteran to his daughter will finally end up in its rightful owner's hands this weekend! Pfc. John Eddington was about to be deployed to Europe in World War II when he learned that his wife had given birth to a daughter named Peggy. He wrote a letter, telling the little girl how much he loved her and wanted to see her. But sadly, he never made it back from the war, and Peggy never met her father ... But his letter and Purple Heart medal both ended up in a box thousands of miles away from Peggy, much like a message in a bottle or a time capsule.

Thankfully, a Missouri woman named Donna Gregory found the box and made it her mission to find Peggy, too, reports the AP ...

Fourteen years ago, Donna was helping her then-husband clean out his grandparents' home in Arnold, Missouri when she stumbled upon a cardboard box filled with WWII memorabilia related to Eddington. No one can really explain what the box was doing there, as Eddington lived in a completely different "neck of the woods" 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. Still, somehow, this box had made its way to that home, and Donna discovered the War Department's message to Eddington's mother about his death in Italy in June 1944, four months after his daughter's birth, the Purple Heart, and the letter Eddington wrote to his daughter while stationed in Texas, just before he was sent overseas. Wow!

Over the course of the next almost decade and a half, Donna did everything she could to track down Peggy. But it wasn't until earlier this year when she started to reach out via Facebook -- oh, the miracle of Facebook! -- that she actually managed to touch base with Peggy Smith, living in Nevada now and of the belief her mother had lost the medal or given it away ... until Donna called.

"It was an unforgettable moment," Donna says, while Peggy could only describe her reaction as "stunned." Aww!

And instead of delivering it herself to Peggy, Donna decided to write a letter to the Patriot Guard Riders, the volunteer organization perhaps best known for patrolling funerals of soldiers to shield relatives from protesters. She said she thought it would be more special if perhaps veterans were to present the Purple Heart to Peggy.

So earlier this week, Donna, her sister, and a friend left St. Louis in an SUV, accompanied by about a dozen motorcyclists from the Patriot Guard. Along the route, different groups of riders are taking turns accompanying Donna. Tomorrow, a parade will begin in Carson City, Nevada and make the 15-mile trek to Dayton, where Peggy will be presented the medal and letter in a ceremony at the high school. Smith's children and most of her 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren will be there. Amazing!!

Though Peggy claims she's "not a big shindig person," she notes she'll be "crying the whole time." As will Donna who says:

I've cherished all of this for a very long time. I've waited for the finale of this journey for over a decade.

Simply incredible. When these two women meet for the first time face to face and Peggy is finally able to read that letter from her father and receive his Purple Heart, it will be such an emotional moment. Here's hoping a local news crew or two capture that moment, because it will be one that is sure to have us all wiping tears from our eyes.

In the meantime, here's a news report documenting Donna and Co. embarking on their journey to Peggy only a few days ago ...

What's your reaction to this amazing story?

Molester Sentenced to 26 Years Still Has His Supporters -- Are They Nuts or Just Human?

Do you ever really know your friends, your family members? This must be the question that the relatives and friends of elementary school teacher Shane Vicars are asking themselves. Shane has been convicted on 13 counts for molesting boys in an after-school program. He was sentenced to 26 years in prison. And yet do we ever really know anyone? Because Shane has so many friends, so much support in the community, despite his horrific acts, that the judge called him "a good man and instructor who lost his judgment in the most horrible way."

Wow. A "good man" who merely "lost his judgment"? Not only that, the judge received 24 letters of support for Vicars, and a large group of supporters wearing "I Support Shane" T-shirts showed up at his sentencing. Are these people just nuts? Or are they ... us?

Vicar's victims were all between the ages of 7 and 11 years old. Vicars was their instructor at an after-school program when the offenses took place. Last year, the case presented six boys as victims -- and the jury was undecided. This year, they narrowed it down to two victims and he was found guilty. The judge told him:

I find that you took advantage of a position of trust and confidence to commit these sexual offenses.

These children will have to live with this their entire lives. The sexual molestation. The emotional turmoil. The breach of trust. They may grow up to be very different people from what they could have grown up to be. Their pain will never go away.

But thinking about myself, and what I would do if someone I loved, cared for, and trusted, who had never proven himself to be anything over than a good person to me, had done these things ... would I still support him or her?

I honestly don't know. I'd like to say I would not. But what if this was someone I'd known for 10 or 20 years? Someone who had helped me out numerous times?

The fact is, molesters can be charming people. It's how they go undetected for so long. People trust them; that's why they're in positions overseeing children.

Vicars has two sides to him. The man everyone likes. And the man who committed these crimes. It's always extremely difficult to merge those two sides in your mind when you encounter someone like that. Think about how we feel when someone we like and trust talks badly about us behind our backs or otherwise betrays us. We're stunned. We're outraged. We're confused.

So I can only imagine what Vicars' supporters feel.

I do not know what I would do. It would depend on my relationship with him, and what he was saying happened. I think there would be a real temptation to not want to accept reality. To think there's some sort of conspiracy. To think people got it wrong. To think people like that don't really exist. Molesters are scary-looking wild-eyed strangers who smell like tequila and haven't had a shower in two weeks, right? Not the guy we hang out with! Not the man who teaches our kids!

Human beings are capable of so much good -- and, unfortunately, so much bad. The worst is when they are capable of both.

What would you do?

Clint Eastwood and Dina Eastwood Announce Split After 17 Years

clint eastwood, dina eastwoodDina Eastwood and husband Clint Eastwood are splitting up after 17 years of marriage. Dina announced the split, admitting that the couple has been living separately for some time and have decided to call it quits. It's sad, obviously, because they have been together for ages and have a daughter (Morgan), but it's not entirely surprising.

After all, during his tenure on this earth, Clint has been exceptionally fond of the ladies. While it was only his second marriage, the dude's got seven kids with five different ladies. I'm not saying he got around -- but he totally got around! Also, the duo had a pretty impressive age difference of 35 years. Add to that Dina's recent hospitalization for anxiety and depression and it's clear something's been up for a while.

It definitely makes you wonder what's in the water, coming as quickly as it does after reports about Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones's separation. I mean, if these tried and true relationships in Hollywood can't last, is there really any hope for all those bright-eyed and bushy-tailed celebrity newlyweds?

Still, this split is a little less surprising. Personally? I would have been out of there the instant my life-mate began addressing empty chairs. It's probably even LESS shocking if you made a habit of watching Bravo's Mrs. Eastwood & Company. I'm not saying you saw Clint and Dina bickering. But the woman had an ENTIRE SOUTH AFRICAN BOY BAND living in her house! Sure, we've all been lonely enough to desire the presence of, say, 'NYSNC at our beck and call 24-7. It's just a few of us lack the financial backing to make our desperate dreams a reality.

Were you surprised to hear about Clint and Dina's split?

30 Ways You Know Your Baby Boy Has Hit Those Tween Years (Sob!)

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

I have to tell you guys something pretty scary, pretty anxiety inducing, pretty unbelievable ... my son just started middle school. When ... how did this happen? Everyone knows, middle school is a major turning point -- a time of self exploration, acclimating to the social mores of tween/teen culture, learning which hair products work best, and feeling like a total loser (whether you have tons of friends or none).

It also reiterates the fact that they're no longer our babies. As terrifying as that is, I've actually been banned from writing about it. Seriously, after calling us moms of boys jealous shrews and exploring what to do when your tween actually pays attention to you, I've literally been given a writing restraining order -- imposed by mothers who can't stop sobbing and giggling ... while sobbing. Though I can no longer wax poetic, I can list the numerous indicators that your little boy has entered a big bad tweenhood. Here are 30 of them:

1. Ninety percent of his responses to questions are in the form of grunts, which can only be deciphered by tone and length.

2. He pretends not to know you when you drop him off somewhere or pick him up. "Dude all your friends know who I am, you're not fooling anyone."

3. His entire life is documented in a series of "selfies" on Instagram: "This is the breakfast I ate ... This is my bus ... How do feel about me? Use this handy emoticon chart to let me know ..."

4. He's saving for $15 socks and has become obsessed with sneakers and slides. (On the bright side, thank God someone else loves shoes as much as you do. On the down side, he grows out of them in a month.)

5. A text bings, he runs away.

6. He spent more time on his hair on the morning of the first day of middle school than he spent on his hair during the entire fifth grade.

7. He wants abs.

8. You have to explain the proper use of words you would never find on a vocabulary list, like "douchebag," so that he doesn't embarrass himself at lunch (expect new words weekly).

9. He locks the door behind him everywhere he goes and with such routine motion you begin to fear the people in Target will be annoyed by this little habit.

10. You have an urge to pry the headphones off his ears with a crowbar.

11. He went from thinking you knew everything to thinking you know nothing in a matter of weeks.

12. All of a sudden he has nothing to say to girls he's been playing with since nursery school.

13. He asks if you're dressed before entering any room, covers his eyes, yelps, or just flees -- as if seeing something, anything, would scar him for life and literally sear his retinas.

14. He went from this dirty kid in sweats and tees with holes and stains to caring if he's worn his that item too recently and if his breath is sufficiently minty.

15. He vehemently agrues that he is right about everything with everyone, but the pets (though I'm sure I've witnessed mine in a heated debate with our dog).

Thanks to my Facebook Fans for adding these doozies!

16. When you realize just how many products are made by Axe. - Leslie

17. The most used words in his vocabulary are "OK" and "so." - Julia

18. When shivering in a hoodie becomes more tolerable than being seen in a winter coat. - Sheryl

19. He has a panic attack if you get near his phone. - Michele

20. He rolls his eyes when you say, "How was your day?" - Loren

21. When How to Hug a Porcupine becomes your favorite reading material. - Tina

21. The answer to every question is the word "fine" but with various inflections. Mad = FINE. Tired = fiiinneeee. Sad = (fine). - Kathleen

22. Your taste in music suddenly sucks. - Jenny

23. Your monthly grocery bill starts competing with your mortgage. - Laura

24. His showers get longer and longer. - Leah

25. He insists on measuring himself back to back with you daily, to see if he's taller. - Leslie

26. When he's up past midnight, doesn't want to wake up for school, and on the weekends rises about 2:30 p.m. - Rachy

27. He asks you a question and as soon as respond, he tilts his head, curls his lip, and says, "That's your answer?" - Amy

28. You play BINGO and call, "O-69," you hear laughter and snickering, then a student announces, "It's just a number people, just a number." - Loren (middle school teacher)

29. When you ask him to explain something to you on the computer and he offers instead to make you a YouTube tutorial - Leslie

30. Suddenly you can pee alone. - Erin

How did you realize you had a middle schooler?

Greedy Brides Still Angry at Guests Who Didn't Give Them Wedding Gifts 10 Years Ago

maandag 26 augustus 2013

wedding giftsIt seems as though there is a trend lately of badly behaved brides who expect their wedding guests to provide them with at least the cost of their meal (and then some) at their weddings or to be prepared to face their wrath. First there was the bride who did not enjoy her guest's thoughtful gift basket (and she let them know) and then there was the bride who had the nerve to complain about a cash-strapped guest's "cheap" $100 cash gift. What is wrong with these people?

It seems these rude brides are not alone. An article in the Sunday styles section of the New York Times highlighted a series of brides and grooms, some of whom have been married close to a decade, who are STILL angry over their wedding gifts -- or lack thereof -- and can't forgive the friends who cheated them.

Are they out of their minds? How is this a news story?

When I got married a decade ago, we registered and we got a lot of beautiful, generous gifts. We still use our copper pots and crystal, among other things and when I do, I remember the people who bought each item for me and I appreciate them.

But I also remember the fun of my wedding and the number of people who trekked all the way across the country to see us get married and gave us a ton of love. Whether they gave me gifts or not is really beside the point. I was just glad they were there.

I am not sure when weddings became opportunities to be completely greedy, but it does seem as though they really have. Obviously, weddings are expensive, but if you choose to have a $200 a plate wedding in a part of the country that is very expensive, then that is your choice.

Guests should not be expected to make their gift according to the budget of the bride. A gift is an expression of love and should reflect the budget of the guest. And you know what? A gift is not mandatory, either. There are plenty of circumstances under which it is perfectly acceptable not to bring a gift.

If someone spends more than $2,000 to come to your wedding (hotel, airfare, etc.) then really to ALSO expect a gift is a little selfish. If they can provide one, awesome. But if not, wouldn't we all rather have our loved ones present?

It is sad that we are letting go of all the beauty of weddings in favor of viewing them as fund-raising opportunities. They are not. We are lucky when people come to love us at all. It makes me sad that so few people remember that.

Did you expect a gift from everyone at your wedding?

Winnie Cooper Kisses Avril Lavigne in Bizarre 'Wonder Years' Tribute (VIDEO)

Winnie Cooper Avril LavigneRemember sweet-faced, innocent Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years? Did you know the actress who played Winnie, Danica McKellar, went on to become a math scholar and co-author what was eventually termed the "Chayes–McKellar–Winn theorem" before writing four amusingly-titled non-fiction books intended to encourage middle-school and high-school girls to succeed in mathematics (Math Doesn't Suck, Kiss My Math, Hot X: Algebra Exposed, and Girls Get Curves: Geometry Takes Shape)? Did you know McKellar is currently making headlines for frenching Avril Lavigne?

I know, that was kind of a random paragraph. But that's what makes this news so incredibly weird: Avril Lavigne's new music video "Rock N Roll" features a hot n' heavy makeout session between Lavigne and Winnie -- err, McKellar. I guess it's supposed to be provocative and sexy and outrageous, but honestly, it just makes me feel old and really kind of nostalgic for that time when Winnie kissed Kevin in Harpers Woods.

So, Lavigne's video is pretty much all over the place -- it's sort of a Tank Girl ripoff with Lavigne fighting a bear-shark creature, a knife-wielding lobster, and a Segway-riding Billy Zane before her dog drunk-crashes her car and she swaps spit with Danica McKellar.

As for the music … well, technically a cat throwing up in the hallway at 4 A.M. is probably worse, but this is a damn close second. Check it out, if you dare:

Wow. That was truly awful. But here I am writing about it, so I guess Lavigne achieved what she was aiming for. Well played, you talentless faux-punk marketing construct -- well played.

As for why McKellar agreed to take part in this aural and visual monstrosity, I can only guess that she's hoping to reboot her acting career, by reminding us all of the household name she once was -- yeah yeah, the Wonder Years-style narration referencing Winnie's first kiss, we get it -- while simultaneously showing off the 38-year-old hottie she is today.

Personally, I think I liked McKellar more when she was cranking out the empowering math books. Anyway, now that you've had all your pleasant Wonder Years memories besmirched with this video, let's try and remember Winnie as she used to be:

Ahhh, that's better.

What do you think of this Avril Lavigne video?
