kate middletonIf you're wondering why Kate Middleton looked oddly relaxed in a photo with Prince William recently, it's because she left Prince George with the nanny for the second time now. The first time a mom leaves her baby with a person who's not a relative? Oof, it's a sobbing, guilt- and anxiety-ridden extravaganza. The second time? Ahhh ... you can actually breathe and take a moment to realize, "Hey, I'm not covered in poop!"

Not everyone is lucky enough to not work and/or have relatives close by, so for some, leaving baby alone with, well, more or less a virtual stranger is a necessity. Of course, you interview them and check their references ad nauseum (and have them come to the house to hang with baby a few times before The Big Day), but still. It's awful. The pits. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But after you get that first time out of the way, it's ... not so bad. The second, third, and fourth times aren't exactly a walk in the park. But they're ... not so bad.

The first time I left my daughter to go to work, it was a sh*tshow. I work from home a few days a week, so I got to be there the day the sitter started, but the day I had to commute to my office? Hoooo boy, was it terrible. I sobbed the entire morning, and checked my phone/texted with the babysitter about 973 times. Was she crying? Did she miss me? Did the nanny remember to burp her just so? But every time I had to leave after that, it got easier. Easier in the sense that I knew my child was in good, safe hands. (Not easier in the sense that I didn't still miss the crap out of her.) I could relax and focus on other things. Things, like, you know, work. But that first time? It's a doozy. I'm sure Kate is glad to have that out of the way. And to you other mamas out there who are yet to do this: Godspeed. It ain't easy.

What was it like the first time you left your child with a sitter?

Kate Middleton dice Prince George Will 'Seguir pasos de papá'

kate middletonHa decidido.

Kate Middleton's Biographer Reveals What Makes the Duchess and Prince William a Good Match

kate middleton prince williamDetails about Duchess Catherine's past, present, and clues to her future are all coming out at warp speed now that Kate: A Biography (can't get more straightforward than that!) is due out on October 1, and author Marcia Moody is dishing to the press to pique our interest in the book. While we're learning lots about Kate as a fashion icon (she used to be a tomboy!) and Kate's work and charities, the juice I find most intriguing centers around her relationship with Prince William.

Thankfully, Parade notes that much of the book is spent on their romance -- how Kate and William met, fell in love, and married. Thus, the magazine decided to ask Moody the intriguing question we'd all like to know the answer to: "What makes Kate and William a good match?"

Moody's response:

Kate and William just click, like any couple in a good relationship, and it’s so clear when you see them together. They have shared interests and life-views, a similar sense of humor, their friends all know each other, they love each other’s families, they strive for the same things, and they are in love.

Awww, so sweet! I love that she notes how it's something that's easily perceived when you see them together, because how spouses interact and come off as a couple really does say so much about how powerful their bond is. Actually, I would say how they "click" is more apparent from their chemistry than all of the other aspects Moody listed -- the common interests, same goals, loving one another's families. Sure, that's important, and awesome if that happens to be the case for you, but those factors are not necessarily integral to making a relationship work.

In other words, we all have different compatibilities that tie us to our partner. I have friends with polar opposite political views than their spouse (I don't know how they do it, but they do!), and friends who barely understand what their spouse does for a living.

In cases like that, I feel like it's more about understanding and supporting one another's interests and goals. And maybe being open to spending time with (maybe even just keeping the peace with!) one another's families -- even if we're not ready to declare our in-laws our new BFFs. You do your best, you know? I'm sure there are couples who are completely on the exact same wavelength most of the time, but many are not and simply love the other person enough to work through their differences. And they have other strengths and commonalities that balance it all out. In fact, I'd venture to guess there are more couples like that than the former!

Still, what Moody says Kate and William have make them very lucky. Not to mention ... even more compatible than they would be if all they had was chemistry. Sounds like it's even further confirmation that their fairy tale romance is actually the real deal!

What do you think makes Kate and William a great match? Where do you and your partner differ -- and see eye-to-eye on interests, life-views, sense of humor, etc.?

Prince William and Kate Middleton Accept a Gift That Makes a Huge Difference for Special Needs People

kate middleton prince george williamOf all the gifts Prince William and Kate received for their new son, George, this has to be the sweetest. Tazia Fawley, a 43-year-old woman with Down syndrome, painted a depiction of the Bristol Balloon Festival. It's a brightly-hued, joy-filled painting perfect for a child's room. And Fawley spent six months creating it. Will and Kate make it a practice to turn down most gifts, but they had to make an exception and graciously accepted Fawley's gift. Accepting the painting sends a strong message about fighting the stigma against Down syndrome.

Heart and Sold, an organization that promotes art created by people with special needs, sent a photo of the finished painting to Will and Kate to see if they would accept it. And how could they not? It's adorable, for one thing. But it was also a chance for the couple to embrace the Down syndrome community and draw attention to Heart and Sold.

But more than that, Will and Kate are setting an example for recognizing and valuing the contributions of people with special needs. Suzie Moffat, the director of Heart and Sold, says "In England, there always has been a stigma attached to (Down syndrome), and now that is washed away by the fact that the Duke and Duchess have accepted that painting. For this to happen, it’s kind of turned that negativity around.” The acceptance of the painting also has the power to encourage other people with Down syndrome to pursue their passion for art.

Will paintings from other artists represented by Heart and Sold start flying off the shelves now, just like every dress Kate wears? I don't know -- it would be amazing if they did! But at the least, I think it's probably their hope that this gesture helps change a few people's perspective.

Do you think accepting this gift will change how people in the UK think of people with Down syndrome?

Prince William Wants to Make the World a Better Place for Prince George's Sake

Prince Willam & babyAs cliché as it sounds, everything in life really does change once you become a parent -- even if you're royalty. And that's why it shouldn't come as a surprise that in the upcoming CNN special, Prince William's Passion: New Hope, New Father -- the Duke of Cambridge admits he wants to "safeguard the future" for Prince George, and plans on continuing his charity work in Africa in the hopes of doing so.

He was always committed to the conservation work he's done over there, but having a baby really made him realize just how important it is and how much he believes in it.

And I think every mom and dad out there will nod their head in agreement. Each and every single one of us worries about our children's futures and wonder what kind of world they will grow up in.

And as Prince William will find out soon enough, the concern over Prince George's well being and safety as he gets older and ventures out into the world will only continue to grow.

Remember how nervous you were the first time you left your baby with a sitter (other than a family member?). For many parents, that's the first time their child is really out of their control, which can be a very unsettling and scary feeling. And as kids get older and go off to school, extracurricular activities, and college and beyond -- we still worry about them. It's only natural that Prince William is thinking about Prince George's future even though he's only a few weeks old.

It's actually pretty touching that his new son is inspiring him to keep trying help those in other parts of the world. It makes sense that he would want to use his position of power to ensure that when Prince George is an adult and has his own children, he'll be living in a world that's better off (hopefully) than the one he was born into.

Geez. Kate Middleton sure is one lucky lady. Not only did she marry a prince -- it turns out he truly is Prince Charming in every sense of the word. There's really no greater quality a husband can have than being an amazing father to his children, and it's obvious that Prince William has already demonstrated that in the short time he's been a dad. (And you know he'll only get even better from here.)

Do you worry about your baby's future as much as the present day?

Prince William Says the Royal Baby Takes After His Brother Harry

Kate Middleton, Prince WilliamPrince William gave his first interview since the birth of his son, Prince George, and he had some adorable, and unexpected, things to say about the little royal. One of the interesting things he said about PG is that the tyke already has a very formed personality -- and that it's like his uncle, Harry! Wills revealed:

He's a little bit of a rascal, let's put it that way! He either reminds me of my brother or me when I was younger, I'm not sure ... [He is] growing quite quickly actually. But he's a little fighter. He kind of, he wriggles around quite a lot. And he doesn't want to go to sleep that much, which is a little bit of a problem.

Hm, does this mean George will grow up to party naked in a Las Vegas hotel room?

One thing that's so interesting about babies is how quickly they develop their own personality. And you never quite know where it's going to come from. We tend to think our kids will be a perfect mixture of parents -- and inherit only the best qualities of both sides. But what if the kid gets the worst qualities of both sides?! Or gets the personality of some long-lost black sheep cousin? Yikes!

Prince Harry is a good guy but, let's face it, kind of the wild card in the family. There was the scandal after he dressed as a Nazi at a costume party. And who can forget his naked romp inside a Las Vegas hotel in January?

One of my friends has an adorable 2-year-old girl. She looks just like her mom. But it's clear she gets a lot of her personality from her dad. We joke that she even likes his favorite bar. But it's true! When we bring her there, she doesn't want to leave. She loves the place. So does he! She loves it even if he's not there. So weird.

Another friend was certain her baby was going to be just like her -- which was the last thing she wanted. She was a very troublesome youth and her baby was a real kicker inside the womb. Sure enough, baby came out a real screamer and a stubborn tantrum-thrower. Just like she used to be. "Oh God," she wailed. "Do I have to deal with myself until she's 16?!"

Hey, Harry isn't all bad. A little spice never hurt anyone. And Wills indicates that George may even be taking after him -- when he was younger. Crazy little kids can grow up to be sweet, even shy, adults. I've seen that happen too. As for myself, I take so little after either one of my parents that I often wonder where the hell I came from. On the other hand, I'm eerily similar to my paternal grandfather. (He and I have the exact same hands too, but that's another story.)

So what will Georgie be like? Whether he's like Harry or Wills, I think he'll be just fine. As long as he's not like Charles.

Haha. Joooooke.

How early could you tell your child's personality?

Kate Middleton’s Mom Is the Only One Who Can Get Prince George to Sleep

kate carole middleton
Besties.Kate Middleton is becoming the guest that just won't leave. What started out as a quick post-baby trip to mum's has turned into a potential six-month stay. And Carole's like, "Dude. Leave already." Just kidding. The Duchess could never be an intrusion to anyone, least of all her mother. But Kate really is considering staying at her parents' Bucklebury home with baby George for a longer time than anticipated. And for a very good reason: Carole is apparently the only one who can get the little prince to sleep.

When you have a newborn, one of the biggest stressors is getting the baby down at night. Some days it's easy, others, not so much. And when sleep is eluding your little one at night, that's when things get really ... un-relaxing. Parents, can I get an amen? The hours are passing by, and you're alternating between nursing and pacing around the room, rocking the baby, hoping that, at some point, the little guy or gal will get tired and pass out. If you have someone who's "no fail" when it comes to getting the baby down at night, you hold on to them like a four-leaf clover that's been attached to a rabbit's foot that's been shoved up a unicorn's ass. Via horseshoe. And sounds like that unicorn is Carole Middleton.

Kate should spend as much time as she wants at her mother's house, if that's where she feels most comfortable. She's on maternity leave from her royal duties, after all, and I'm sure Carole is loving every minute she's getting to spend with her daughter and grandson. And if I were a betting woman, I'd say in a few weeks, Kate's plans will change. Because babies? They always be changing.

What do you think about Kate Middleton staying with her mom?

Kevin Federline's Bride Victoria Prince Married Him in a Dress Fit for Britney Spears

Kevin Federline Victoria PrinceHer marriage to Kevin Federline came as quite a surprise last weekend, and now photos of Victoria Prince's wedding gown have been released. It's very Las Vegas, to say the least.

With a sweetheart neckline, tons of beading on the bodice, and a skirt of lace and tulle complete with a floral print -- this thing has Sin City wedding written all over it. You know, like something Britney Spears would pick out. (Eye roll.)

As someone who prefers very simple wedding dresses with little to no embellishment or detail, the gown certainly isn't something I would've chosen or even envisioned for my big day.

But still, she really did look beautiful. Considering Victoria married K-Fed, her attire is surprisingly clean-cut versus what you'd expect from his bride.

No offense to Kev, but he's got a bit of the bad boy thing going on, and somehow I picture him marrying someone in a skimpy, possibly leather mini-dress instead of a full-length gown. Even Victoria's hair is very traditional, pulled back into a simple updo and worn with a mid-length veil.

But you know what was really, really sweet about her wedding style? Victoria and Kevin's daughter, Jordan Kay, wore a little dress that had similar detail to her mom's, which is beyond adorable.

It's obvious that Kevin and Victoria were over-the-moon to finally make things official by getting hitched. They are clearly very much in love and ready to take this big step in their lives together.

I guess it really doesn't matter what Victoria wore -- because the smile on her face was the most beautiful part of her ensemble for sure.

What do you think of Victoria's wedding dress?

Prince William's Paternity Leave Was Too Short to Really Bond With Son George

royal couple with babyCan you believe it's already been two weeks since the royal baby, Prince George, was born? Time has just flown by, especially for his poor dad. Prince William's paternity leave is already over. Will is officially back on duty as a search and rescue pilot for the Royal Air Force in Anglesey, Wales as of today, but his next assignment isn't until Wednesday so he'll probably not leave until Tuesday night. Still... only two weeks? That's so short!

I guess not even a prince can get away with extending his paternity leave. That's too bad. I think two weeks is too short for any new dad, whatever your job is. But I also know that dads rarely take more time off than that. In fact, you're lucky if you even get those two weeks at all.

Maybe Prince William doesn't want to appear like he's getting special privileges not granted to anyone else in the Royal Air Force just because he's the prince. I can understand that... I guess. But then, he's probably getting some other, less public privileges. And wouldn't this be a good time for him to advocate for longer paternity leave?

Oh well, it's just for the rest of the summer. Prince William plans to change his assignment once his tour is over so he can spend more time with the family, and that's a choice most military families can't make. Plus Kate is staying with her parents in Bucklebury, so she's not exactly being left on her own.

But I'm sure she'll be thrilled once William is back for good. Babies are funny -- in some ways, they don't do a whole lot at this stage, so it's easy to say William won't miss out on much. But then, babies grow and change so quickly, so he'll come back to a different child even after just a few weeks. Good thing he had the time that he did with Kate and George.

How long do you think new dads should get for paternity leave?

Prince William Talks Adorably About Fatherhood in First Outing Since Baby George Went Home

Prince William ventured away from baby George for the first time since his becoming a father to participate in a charity polo event with Uncle Harry. And really, he was more adorable than ever. I can't wait for the day when little George is on the sidelines cheering his dad on.

What struck me from seeing Prince William for the first time, since he left the hospital as a family of three, was how at ease and happy he seemed to be. He has this amazing new dad glow. And was more than happy to talk about life as a new father.

Prince William told reporters, "I was in baby mode out there, thinking about nappies, I wasn’t really in the zone." And joked that he was in need of diapers, saying he was going to have to "pick some up on my way home."

How cute is he??

And as for Kate, she stayed home with her parents in Buckleberry. And I am sure, like the rest of us, is a little sad that Prince William's paternity leave ends this Monday. But that's the reason, right there, that I love them so much. We can relate to them more than any other royal couple. They just seem so real. So approachable. Don't you get the feeling that they are changing dirty diapers and dealing with sleepless nights, just like we have done?
