purple heart medal in handAfter seven decades, a letter from a World War II veteran to his daughter will finally end up in its rightful owner's hands this weekend! Pfc. John Eddington was about to be deployed to Europe in World War II when he learned that his wife had given birth to a daughter named Peggy. He wrote a letter, telling the little girl how much he loved her and wanted to see her. But sadly, he never made it back from the war, and Peggy never met her father ... But his letter and Purple Heart medal both ended up in a box thousands of miles away from Peggy, much like a message in a bottle or a time capsule.

Thankfully, a Missouri woman named Donna Gregory found the box and made it her mission to find Peggy, too, reports the AP ...

Fourteen years ago, Donna was helping her then-husband clean out his grandparents' home in Arnold, Missouri when she stumbled upon a cardboard box filled with WWII memorabilia related to Eddington. No one can really explain what the box was doing there, as Eddington lived in a completely different "neck of the woods" 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. Still, somehow, this box had made its way to that home, and Donna discovered the War Department's message to Eddington's mother about his death in Italy in June 1944, four months after his daughter's birth, the Purple Heart, and the letter Eddington wrote to his daughter while stationed in Texas, just before he was sent overseas. Wow!

Over the course of the next almost decade and a half, Donna did everything she could to track down Peggy. But it wasn't until earlier this year when she started to reach out via Facebook -- oh, the miracle of Facebook! -- that she actually managed to touch base with Peggy Smith, living in Nevada now and of the belief her mother had lost the medal or given it away ... until Donna called.

"It was an unforgettable moment," Donna says, while Peggy could only describe her reaction as "stunned." Aww!

And instead of delivering it herself to Peggy, Donna decided to write a letter to the Patriot Guard Riders, the volunteer organization perhaps best known for patrolling funerals of soldiers to shield relatives from protesters. She said she thought it would be more special if perhaps veterans were to present the Purple Heart to Peggy.

So earlier this week, Donna, her sister, and a friend left St. Louis in an SUV, accompanied by about a dozen motorcyclists from the Patriot Guard. Along the route, different groups of riders are taking turns accompanying Donna. Tomorrow, a parade will begin in Carson City, Nevada and make the 15-mile trek to Dayton, where Peggy will be presented the medal and letter in a ceremony at the high school. Smith's children and most of her 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren will be there. Amazing!!

Though Peggy claims she's "not a big shindig person," she notes she'll be "crying the whole time." As will Donna who says:

I've cherished all of this for a very long time. I've waited for the finale of this journey for over a decade.

Simply incredible. When these two women meet for the first time face to face and Peggy is finally able to read that letter from her father and receive his Purple Heart, it will be such an emotional moment. Here's hoping a local news crew or two capture that moment, because it will be one that is sure to have us all wiping tears from our eyes.

In the meantime, here's a news report documenting Donna and Co. embarking on their journey to Peggy only a few days ago ...

What's your reaction to this amazing story?

spider manWhether you've experienced it firsthand recently or have drawn conclusions from reality shows like Four Weddings and Say Yes to the Dress, you'd have to be living under a rock to not know that weddings are crazy expensive these days! So expensive, in fact, that some people are resorting to selling precious antiques and other valuable possessions just to get their vendors paid! Well, at least that's the route one father of a Cleveland bride took recently.

Richard Schaen, whose daughter Jane is getting married in two weeks, was worried about the cost of the wedding. But then he remembered he has amassed a rather valuable comic book collection over the years. One rare find: A copy of Amazing Spider-Man No. 1, which he bought for 12 cents in 1963. He decided to list it for sale online and ended up nabbing $7,900 for it. Nice!

Turns out that if it had been in even better condition, he may have gotten up to four times that amount! Damn, coulda meant even MORE guests/flowers/hours of open bar! Ha. But no, in all seriousness, Schaen was elated, and told the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

I gave my daughter a promissory note for the money with a picture of the Spider-Man comic, which we can use to pay for a big part of the catering for her reception.

Awesome! SO sweet. But at the same time -- ouch ... I guess Schaen didn't seem too emotionally attached to the comic book, but what a statement his sale makes about a typical wedding's price tag. Note how he said "a big part of the CATERING for her reception." Not even all of the catering. And just the catering. That's not even taking into consideration any venue charges, the decor/flowers, hair/makeup, photographers, videographers, photo booth (or maybe slow motion booth!), wedding rings, honeymoon, officiant fee, ughhh.

Sure, Jane Schaen could have passed on a wedding with that particular price tag, but maybe she and her fiance wanted to include their whole family. And when it comes to a wedding of a certain style, size, and in a particular location (like the east coast or a bigger city), you quickly learn some things simply cost what they cost. Then it's easy to find yourself feeling like you're stuck between a rock and a hard place. But Richard Schaen sure showed us the best fix for that: Be resourceful, start digging, and you may find buried treasure to trade in for wedding cash!

What do you think about what this father of the bride did for his daughter?

Teen Kills His 3 Nephews for $300 ... Promised by Their Father!

A 19-year-old Wisconsin boy did the absolutely unthinkable. He killed his three young nephews and tried to kill his young niece and his pregnant sister-in-law -- all by burning down their house. He did this even though their mother, Sharon Wand, treated him like a son. The three young boys died. His 2-year-old niece, Jessica, survived, but no thanks to teen killer Jeremy Wand, who tried to throw her back into the flames when it looked like she might escape. And he did it all for $300. He's been sentenced to life in prison. But the judge ruled that he's eligible for parole. Why? Because the judge believes he was being coerced and influenced. By his brother and mother!!!

Reportedly, Jeremy Wand's eldest brother, Armin, wanted his wife, four kids, and unborn child all dead. All gone. Why?

So he could "start afresh." With their cashed in insurance policies.

Yep, he didn't want to take the divorce route -- even though the couple's divorce was almost finalized. He wanted to exterminate the entire family he had willingly built himself -- just because he wanted a new life. We've heard this heinous story before and no doubt we will hear it again. The dark side of human nature is very dark indeed.

Armin (who was found guilty and is serving life in prison) apparently talked his brother into helping him burn down the house and kill his family. He would pay him $300.

The capper? Allegedly Armin and Jeremy's mom thought the whole thing was a fine idea. She thought her son Armin deserved a fresh start too. Even if that meant murdering all of her grandchildren and her daughter-in-law.

This sounds like a family that had no morals. A family of sociopaths. And Jeremy, whether he was one or not, grew up in it. Had his mind formed by his mother and older brother from the time he was a child.

Who knows if he could have ever found the willpower to think independently?

At what age is a child supposed to form their own moral character? And can they do that when everyone else in the family has none?

Apparently the judge thinks that Jeremy might deserve a second chance. Hell, this is one person who might do better in prison than being around his own family.

It's easy to say, "He was 19. Old enough to know what he was doing." And it takes a special kind of cruelty and inhumanity to throw a screaming toddler back into a fire. He killed three young boys who "adored" him, according to Sharon. He tried to kill his sister-in-law and niece. Sharon Wand ended up having a miscarriage, so he killed another child too.

It takes a subhuman to do all of this.

But this is all he ever knew. This kind of mind. The subhuman, sociopathic mind.

I am not convinced he deserves a second chance. He's most likely a lost cause. However, even Sharon Wand, who has gone through the worst thing any human being can, thinks her nephew Jeremy deserves a chance at parole. When the judge asked her, she replied, "He’s a really good guy. I love him dearly." And admitted he was under the influence of his "abusive" older brother.

It all makes you think about the family's you're born into -- and whether you can ever escape them.

Do you think this teen ever deserves another chance at living in society?
