cars at stoplightA couple of weeks ago while in the middle of packing up what I thought was my dream house in the country to move back to the city a very changed woman, a small white car nearly crashed into my compact SUV as it pulled out of the shopping complex without seeing me directly in the lane she was driving into. My twins were in the backseat -- they are 3 1/2. It wasn't just any near miss to me. It was an almost accident where I envisioned far too much blood and destruction in the 3.5 seconds in which it nearly happened. She would have hit me on the driver's side -- head on to my door and the passenger door right where my daughter was strapped in and rear-facing. I have Radian car seats and know their side impact car seat safety was excellent, but it's not something I ever wanted to truly put to the test.

And the girl who almost hit me was me ... 17 years ago me.

She was young and look sweet and innocent and was probably a college student who had just went into the grocery store to stock up on noodles and butter -- my staples when I was a college student in the very same town this all happened in. And I know exactly what she looked like because I got out of my car to yell at her. She had really pretty long blonde hair that shined in the noontime sun.

It's a moment I am not particularly proud of. But certainly not the worst thing I've done in this town. It was my college town, after all.

However, my stress was at an all time high. I was (and am) going through a lot of personal stuff that no amount of online self-help or professional therapy could cure quickly enough. So my reaction wasn't the best, nor do I recommend it to anyone. Yes, she was in the wrong for bolting out of the parking lot she was in right into my lane, but I was wrong for being a raging lunatic screaming at her right there at the intersection while the light was still red. Yes, I had to swerve crazy hard to the right to avoid smashed glass and dented doors and heaven forbid hurt children. And thank goodness there was no one in that right lane. But I was wrong. Embarrassingly wrong. My son asked, "Mommy why did you yell at that lady?" after it all went down. I think he knew I was wrong, too. And here's how it went down.

The near miss. Me yelling at her with my window down as she was in front of me at the stop light. Me beeping my horn at her wanting her to wave or something to acknowledge that she almost hit me and scared the bettlejuice out of me because MY KIDS WERE IN THE CAR. And because she did nothing, I did something. I got out of my car (I know it was wrong, you don't have to remind me though I know you will) and went to her. She was alone and her window was down but she wouldn't look at me. The other cars around us all began rolling down their windows to see what this insane woman was yelling. The insane woman was me. I was yelling loud, no doubt the Queens, Nu Yawk, accent coming out that you only hear when I'm yelling this intensely, telling her that "I have kids in the car!" as my arms waved frantically pointing back at my car behind hers, driver's side door open, kids in the back no doubt wondering where their crazy mother had gone. "YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION!! YOU NEED TO BE MORE CAREFUL!!"

Okay, crazy lady, she probably thought. I don't blame her. I was her. I was once a not so careful driver who probably once worried more about what music I was listening to as I sped around town over making sure I didn't crash into anything. I was a young person once with no real fear of terrible consequences. But that person is long gone. I am a mother now and part of my existence is to protect my kids from harm. This girl was the "enemy", putting their lives in danger and the full roar of my mama bear was out, claws and all, right there in the intersection with an audience.

I scared her. She muttered she was sorry, barely looking directly at me. It was only a few seconds of berating. I marched back to my car and as I mentioned, my son asked "Mommy why did you yell at that lady?" Putting on a calm voice, I told him she wasn't a very good driver and she almost hit our car and I got worried we would get hurt. I may have scared her for that moment, but I was scared. Motherhood is terrifying -- you have your heart existing outside your body and you have to protect it.

"We're not hurt, Mommy," my daughter reminded me.

And we weren't. But I was. I was hurt and wounded and going through a whole lot. It was one of those moments that if it happened in a happier time perhaps I wouldn't have reacted so strongly. But no one should ever get in the way of a mother going through some stuff and feeling as if the safety of her kids was in danger. The adrenaline started taking over and I began shaking and crying. The light turned green and I pulled into the grocery store parking lot to calm down. We're not hurt, Mommy rang in my head. We were okay. We will be okay.

To the pretty blonde girl in the little white car: I am sorry, too.

Have you ever experienced something like this where something or someone nearly hurt your kids (accidentally) and you flew into a rage?

Horrifying Impact of Texting and Driving Shown in Heartbreaking New Film Might Stop It for Good (VIDEO)

texting and drivingIt truly is shocking that people still text and drive. Despite the fact that there are about 1.6 million accidents caused by texting and driving every year, and that "driving while intexticated" is considered six times worse than driving drunk, people still do it. Why? Do they really think that a life-changing car accident, or death, will never happen to or by them? Do they think that responding "LOL" to some meaningless and trivial thing a friend wrote to them is more important than their safety or the safety of others? Many do, which, sadly, is why every day there are about 11 teen deaths from texting and driving.

It needs to stop.

Famed film maker, Werner Herzog, deviated from his standard art house fare to create what essentially is a 35-minute PSA on the dangers of texting and driving. The documentary is called From One Second to the Next and it looks at the lives of people who have been affected by this terribly pervasive habit. A mom who lost all traces of the vibrant, rambunctious child she once knew. A regular guy who killed three people by sending the message "I love you" to his wife. And a man who decided that "texting and driving was more important to him than two men were to their families."

If you do one thing today, please watch this video and then pass it along to anyone you can. The film is hard to swallow, but hopefully its gut-wrenching rawness will prevent people from ever texting and driving again. It will cost you nothing, and hopefully it will prevent costing someone's life.

facebookFacebook makes you happier, smarter, and more at one with the real world. Just kidding. It makes you depressed, dumber, and is super isolating. Another study has found that, duh, Facebook makes you sad. But we already know that, so no need to dwell. Let's focus on another interesting thing the study found. People tend to spend a decent chunk of time looking at the Facebook pages of people they don't like -- "frenemies and exes", to be exact. Why, right? Seems kind of masochistic and like a terrible use of social media.

Let's stop the madness, you guys. What do you say? Let's, for once and for all, learn to use Facebook in a healthy way with these 7 tips!

Or, you know, just quit.

1. Don't be friends with people you haven't had physical contact with in two years or less. Have your friends on Facebook be people you're actually friends with. You know, people you care about and who care about you. If you spend your time looking up what Joe Schmo from high school is up to, really, what did you do all day?

2. Only be friends with people you actually like. I understand the concept of stalking people you don't like -- girls who made your life a living hell in grade school; some jerkface you used to work with, but ... what is the point? What good comes out of that? It's a waste of perfectly good time and energy. You could be ... knitting instead.

3. Don't be friends with exes!!! Bad, bad, bad idea. Just bad.

4. Limit your Facebook checking to once a day. Once you go upward of three Facebook checks a day, it's bordering on obsession. Tell yourself you can check once and then call it.

5. Don't have Facebook on your phone. It's one of the reasons you check it so often! You're bored in line at the store, so what do you do? Check Facebook! Stop! If you just have it on your computer, you won't be on it as frequently.

6. Don't be the person who posts super personal things. Facebook is a social media site, it's not a therapy session. Having people you're not very close with know all sorts of personal info about your life isn't healthy. Like, at all.

7. Don't stare at other people's photos and convince yourself that that's how their life is. Because it's not. They're only posting their greatest hits. Trust me.

What do you have to add?

Parents Arrested for Driving Drunk ... With Their Kids in the Trunk!

It must be time for the Worst Parent of the Year awards, because these particular parents were certainly out to get a medal. A couple were arrested in San Bernardino, California after someone noticed something odd inside their car trunk. The person called police. Cops came to check it out and asked the mom to open the trunk. She reportedly hesitated but then flipped it. And there. In the trunk. Were. TWO CHILDREN. And, yes, they belonged to her. Grrr .....

It all started when April and Richard Burgo went through a drive-through at a restaurant. Apparently they must have popped the trunk for a moment because a witness saw a child in the trunk and called 911. Cops found the car after it left the restaurant and pulled it over.

Reportedly, cops could smell booze a mile away. The allegedly inebriated couple were in the car with another adult. The mom was driving. When asked to open the trunk, that's when cops made their alarming discovery. Inside were a 6-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl, both crying.

It breaks my heart to think of what these poor kids were feeling and knowing their (allegedly) blotto parents had put them in the freaking trunk! Police believe everyone was aware the children were there. That this wasn't some kind of accident.

I don't think these parents deserve another chance at parenthood. If it was a deliberate act, it is one of the cruelest I can think of.

The children are now under the care of a relative. It really boggles my mind why some people have kids. And to think child-free people are judged for not having them??!!

Thanks must go out to the person whose eagle-eye saw the child earlier. And who was caring enough to call 911. A lot of people might have doubted what they saw. Or assumed it was some kind of game.

Get involved. Keep vigilant. Not everyone is taking care of their kids. Some are being downright tortured. You have every right to call the police. Even if it turns out to be nothing, you did the right thing.

Have you ever seen anything that made you call 911 on a parent?

Nanny Says Mom Beat Her Up When She Tried to Stop Her From Driving Drunk With Child (VIDEO)

A mom of two is accused of beating up her nanny. She allegedly attacked her, grabbed her neck, pulled her hair, threw her to the ground, and tried to punch her. Sheesh, what could cause a mother to go off on her nanny like that? Did the nanny give the kid a juice box or something? Nope. Reportedly, the nanny was merely trying to stop the mom from driving with her 14-month-old in the car -- because she was drunk.

Reportedly, the 20-year-old nanny thought the 44-year-old mom from Long Island, New York, Laura Bowery-Falco, was inebriated and shouldn't be driving. But after the fracas, Bowery-Falco allegedly got in her car anyway and drove away with the kid in tow. Shortly afterwards, the mom was pulled over by cops and arrested on DUI charges. She is also charged with harassment and endangering the welfare of the child.

Her lawyer denies everything.

The mom is a wealthy woman who owns an equestrian stable in the Hamptons, a playground for New York's elite. No doubt she doesn't like being told what to do.

It's not totally clear what happened here, though if she was arrested on DUI charges, I assume there was some good evidence she was driving when she shouldn't be -- but the truth is that nannies put up with a lot. Nannies got a bad rap thanks to the horrific case of Yoselyn Ortega, who allegedly killed her two young charges, but the vast majority of the time, nannies are good people who are in a difficult position. They're in charge of the kids and not in charge at the same time.

I know from my time being a teen au pair that it can be an awkward situation in the extreme, depending on how the mom is. In one of my au pair jobs, I watched the mom make horrible decisions about her kids -- including physically disciplining them in ways I felt were inappropriate -- and yet I couldn't say anything about it. It didn't help that I was in a foreign country. I finally left the house for good one day when she slapped her daughter and I listened to the little girl cry hysterically.

The mom here, if the nanny's version is correct, should have been grateful that the nanny cared enough about her child to step in and try to stop the mom from making a bad decision about her kid. But that's not usually the way it works.

I really feel for this nanny. Hopefully she can find a better family -- or get out of the nanny business, which can be a thankless one.

Have you ever had a nanny or been one?
