Downton AbbeyDownton Abbey fans, I've got some great news for you: the official season 4 trailer will be released this Saturday, August 31. The show just wrapped its final day of shooting a week ago, editing for the Christmas special began on August 21, and today a teaser video for the upcoming season hit the web.

With all these exciting announcements, it almost makes up for the fact that U.S. viewers have to wait four frickin' months after the show premieres in the U.K. in mid-September! ALMOST.

The 10-second teaser features Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess, and while the video doesn’t reveal too much visually, her dialogue hints at the major heartbreak still resonating from last season's tragic events.

(Spoilers for season 3 ahead!)

As you likely remember all too clearly, Matthew died last season in a car accident that happened just after he'd seen his newborn son for the first time. Even though I'd been spoilered about his death, I was still completely shocked and dismayed when it happened. Because first he was all, doop di do tra la la LAAAAAA!

And then he was like, gaaaaaaaaack.

And I was all,

Anyway, season 4 will reportedly pick up six months after Matthew's death. Much has been made about the fact that Lady Mary will have new suitors in the wake of losing her husband, but based on this new teaser clip, she'll be faced with some very heavy and realistic grief along the way. Take a look:

That's quite a line, isn't it? "You have a straightforward choice before you: You must choose either death or life."

We can't see who the Dowager Countess is talking to, but it stands to reason that she's giving advice to Lady Mary. Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, recently spoke about season 4 and how her character would evolve after losing Matthew. Dockery referenced the new love interests ("One is an old family friend who she hasn't seen since she was a child"), but she also described the challenges Lady Mary will face at the start of the season:

Mary was never going to be a very maternal mother. To begin with, it's hard to bond with the baby because she looks at him and sees Matthew. So motherhood is a slow process for Mary. She's incredibly strong and she has the strength to kind of see it through. Throughout the series, Mary slowly comes back to life and, of course, it's important for her to eventually move on. But it is kind of touch and go in the beginning. She is in a really, really dark place.

It sounds weird to say I like hearing this, because who likes watching someone mourn and struggle with new motherhood? But it's somehow good to hear that the show will focus on the logical aspect of how Mary would be dealing with so much sorrow, and not brush that aside in their eagerness to trot out the hotly anticipated list of new suitors.

What did you think of this quick teaser?

downton abbey season 4Is it Monday afternoon? Well then! Clearly it's time to brew ourselves a cup of tea and look at Downton Abbey season 4 cast photos. Of course, it'll still be months and months before we see any of these scenes in action. (Why no, I'm not resentful at all, PBS!) But we can still enjoy teensy little glimpses of what's to come. And you know what else? Maybe I'll cut out some of these photos to make my very own Downton Abbey paper dolls so I can act out scenes of what I think happens in the next season. Because guess who's here? Aw yeah, Mary's two boyfriends, Sir Anthony Gillingham and Charles Blake. Plus, give it up for the third hottie of season 4, jazz musician Jack Ross. Ladies, your man candy has arrived.

Check out these sneak peeks at Downton and guess what they reveal about the next season.

It's the whole fam-damily and then some, all posed together like dominoes. Just tip Carson over and they'll all go falling down. Of course, it's hard not to notice the former characters who are no longer with us. Mrs. O'Brien -- a tear! Oh yeah, and also whats-his-name, Matthew, and Sybil.

downton abbey pbs press tourExciting news, Downton fans! We have an official date for the premiere of Downton Abbey season 4. For months we've been catching little spoiler crumbs about the new season. We've seen photos, we've scoured actors' interviews for revealing details. And it seems like the show's premiere is just around the corner. I think they may even be finished filming, or nearly finished. I can't wait -- you? All right then, the premiere date is September ...

Oh Goddammit, no. That's when it's premiering in the UK. Here's the US premiere date: Sunday, January 5, 2014. It will run for eight consecutive weeks, and the finale will air February 23, 2014.

WTF, why am I even writing about this show? In Internet time that's like a millennium. I'll have forgotten how to spell "Downton" by January. Wait this long and I'll end up writing something like, "Downtown Abbie, a TV series (or was it a movie?) from the days when I was just a young'un, is making its return. I hope we've all brushed up on our Middle English. What is this show about, again? Something about a doctor traveling through time and space in a phone booth?" I will be traveling via rocket jet shoes by the year 2014, that's all I know.

Well at least the show will run for eight consecutive weeks, unlike the third season. Remember that? We got hit with a mere handful of two-hour episodes that were all over way too quickly. No more doubling up. And I'm assuming that by "consecutive," they mean we won't have to suffer through any Downton Abbey-less weekends. Good thing, because those can really kill your spirits and leave you in a despondent funk for the rest of the week.

You may ask yourself: WHY? Why are they doing this? Don't they know everyone on the other side of the pond is going to go and spoil all the details? Is this revenge for the Revolutionary War, or for copying every successful TV show you've ever had? Tell me!

Actually, we can't blame the British. This is on us or, more specifically, on PBS. Yesterday PBS chief Paula Kerger told exasperated fans, "We look carefully at the [competition] in the fall schedule with that in mind. We look at how we get promotion and buzz about it -- and that word of mouth has actually benefited us. We don't want to mess with that if it's working so well." In other words, making us wait is good for ratings, apparently. Well fine! See if I still care by then.

Oh who am I kidding? She's right. I'll be plastered in front of my TV come January 5 just like all the other fans.

Do you think Downton Abbey should air at the same time in the UK and the US?

downton abbey calendarAll right, all right, enough talk about the Royal Baby. Let's talk about the Downton babies. Did anyone remember that Mary and Matthew named their baby GEORGE? How prescient of them. Want to meet George and his elder cousin, Sybil? New photos from Downtown Abbey Season 4 have surfaced within the pages of a 2014 calendar. And there we catch a glimpse of the youngest members of the house. Already!

Like all things Downton, the Brits get theirs first and we have to wait until August. Dah! But it's okay, because kind people overseas have gone and scanned in pages of the calendar so we can still see the wee babes.

That doesn't mean I can post them here on The Stir, though (porque no hay permission). But I can point you in the right direction if you promise to come right back over here so we can discuss. All right? Right. So here we have Tom Branson and Sybil II. You may now commence fainting from the cute. And here's one with Tom and little Sybil with Mary and George. Whew, that's one severe look on Mary's face, isn't it? I'd hate to face her after throwing a ball into a window.

There's more, of course. Here's Edith with her married-to-madwoman-in-the-attic beau Michael Gregson sharing a knowing smile. So looks like that's still going on in Season 4 (excellent). And that's about all the scoop I've been able to scope from these calendar pics so far.

A whole fleet of 2014 Downton Abbey calendars awaits your perusal, by the way. An embarrassment of riches, hahaha. No, but I mention this in case you want the Downton Abbey calendar with the children. The others feature just the adult characters, not that there's anything wrong with that. Anyway, I'm especially charmed by little Sybil. Think she'll be as feisty a toddler as her mother was as an adult? Probably more so.

What do you think of the two babies of Downton Abbey?
