'Downton Abbey' Season 4 Teaser Reveals Lady Mary's Devastating Struggle (VIDEO)

Downton AbbeyDownton Abbey fans, I've got some great news for you: the official season 4 trailer will be released this Saturday, August 31. The show just wrapped its final day of shooting a week ago, editing for the Christmas special began on August 21, and today a teaser video for the upcoming season hit the web.

With all these exciting announcements, it almost makes up for the fact that U.S. viewers have to wait four frickin' months after the show premieres in the U.K. in mid-September! ALMOST.

The 10-second teaser features Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess, and while the video doesn’t reveal too much visually, her dialogue hints at the major heartbreak still resonating from last season's tragic events.

(Spoilers for season 3 ahead!)

As you likely remember all too clearly, Matthew died last season in a car accident that happened just after he'd seen his newborn son for the first time. Even though I'd been spoilered about his death, I was still completely shocked and dismayed when it happened. Because first he was all, doop di do tra la la LAAAAAA!

And then he was like, gaaaaaaaaack.

And I was all,

Anyway, season 4 will reportedly pick up six months after Matthew's death. Much has been made about the fact that Lady Mary will have new suitors in the wake of losing her husband, but based on this new teaser clip, she'll be faced with some very heavy and realistic grief along the way. Take a look:

That's quite a line, isn't it? "You have a straightforward choice before you: You must choose either death or life."

We can't see who the Dowager Countess is talking to, but it stands to reason that she's giving advice to Lady Mary. Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, recently spoke about season 4 and how her character would evolve after losing Matthew. Dockery referenced the new love interests ("One is an old family friend who she hasn't seen since she was a child"), but she also described the challenges Lady Mary will face at the start of the season:

Mary was never going to be a very maternal mother. To begin with, it's hard to bond with the baby because she looks at him and sees Matthew. So motherhood is a slow process for Mary. She's incredibly strong and she has the strength to kind of see it through. Throughout the series, Mary slowly comes back to life and, of course, it's important for her to eventually move on. But it is kind of touch and go in the beginning. She is in a really, really dark place.

It sounds weird to say I like hearing this, because who likes watching someone mourn and struggle with new motherhood? But it's somehow good to hear that the show will focus on the logical aspect of how Mary would be dealing with so much sorrow, and not brush that aside in their eagerness to trot out the hotly anticipated list of new suitors.

Upbeat 'Glee' Season 5 Teaser Is a Tough Pill for Fans to Swallow (VIDEO)

sue sylvester as nicki minajThe Glee season 5 premiere will be here before we know it. And Fox doesn't want us to forget that, so they've released a teaser entitled, "Once Again." Just like every year. Except this isn't every year. This year, the cast, crew, and Glee fans around the world are still mourning the loss of Cory Monteith ...

And for that reason, it is a bit jarring to see a Glee promo with the same light and liveliness and color that it had before. As Jezebel put it, it might rub some as "eerily chipper." But at the same time ... what did we expect?

Here's the clip if you haven't seen it yet ...

Okay, sure, it may be off-putting, weird, bizarre, or simply depressing to think about Glee's return being as "whoopdeedoo," carefree, spirited as this promo makes it seem. But it looks like this was meant as a reminder that Lea Michele & Co. are delivering Glee to us "once again," even in light of a traumatic situation. A reminder that life and Glee goes on. (As Cory probably would have wanted it to.)

Not that it still isn't hard for us to separate reality from fiction. And not that it isn't normal for fans to watch this and feel like something's missing, because it isn't somber in tone or even acknowledging Cory. But that will come too. In the meantime, there's no harm in knowing the next installment of Glee will be as entertaining as it's sure to be tearjerking at times.

What are your thoughts on the promo?

‘Downton Abbey’ Teaser Photos Debut the Other Baby George – Lady Mary’s Son!

downton abbey calendarAll right, all right, enough talk about the Royal Baby. Let's talk about the Downton babies. Did anyone remember that Mary and Matthew named their baby GEORGE? How prescient of them. Want to meet George and his elder cousin, Sybil? New photos from Downtown Abbey Season 4 have surfaced within the pages of a 2014 calendar. And there we catch a glimpse of the youngest members of the house. Already!

Like all things Downton, the Brits get theirs first and we have to wait until August. Dah! But it's okay, because kind people overseas have gone and scanned in pages of the calendar so we can still see the wee babes.

That doesn't mean I can post them here on The Stir, though (porque no hay permission). But I can point you in the right direction if you promise to come right back over here so we can discuss. All right? Right. So here we have Tom Branson and Sybil II. You may now commence fainting from the cute. And here's one with Tom and little Sybil with Mary and George. Whew, that's one severe look on Mary's face, isn't it? I'd hate to face her after throwing a ball into a window.

There's more, of course. Here's Edith with her married-to-madwoman-in-the-attic beau Michael Gregson sharing a knowing smile. So looks like that's still going on in Season 4 (excellent). And that's about all the scoop I've been able to scope from these calendar pics so far.

A whole fleet of 2014 Downton Abbey calendars awaits your perusal, by the way. An embarrassment of riches, hahaha. No, but I mention this in case you want the Downton Abbey calendar with the children. The others feature just the adult characters, not that there's anything wrong with that. Anyway, I'm especially charmed by little Sybil. Think she'll be as feisty a toddler as her mother was as an adult? Probably more so.

What do you think of the two babies of Downton Abbey?

'Breaking Bad' Teaser Photos Hint at Devastation to Come in Final Season

Breaking BadI know I JUST wrote about Breaking Bad, but now that the premiere is getting closer (August 11th! Yeah, bitch! MAGNETS!), promotions for the final eight episodes are starting to kick into high gear. AMC took the interesting step of releasing a highlight reel focused on the biggest moments of the show to date rather than giving us any preview clips of the last shows of the series, but when it comes to hints and teases from the cast and crew, the floodgates are officially open.

The consensus on the last half of the fifth and final season of Breaking Bad? In a nutshell: get ready, because it's going to be a hell of a ride.

Not that it's a huge surprise that a show known for emotionally destroying its viewers on a weekly basis isn't planning to end on a light note. But unless the Breaking Bad team is writing checks their butts can't cash, these last episodes are going to be even more shocking than what we've seen in the past.

From Aaron Paul, who plays Jesse Pinkman:

This season slaughters every past season. We're burning every bridge, but we're not being dark just to be dark. It just plummets.

Anna Gunn, who plays Skyler:

It's not pretty — it's as it should be. It's a painful place: the crumbling of every single character.

Creator Vince Gilligan:

This is a race to the finish. We leave it all on the field. No loose ends go untied. It's a fast-moving eight episodes.

Dean Norris, who plays Hank:

This last eight, they've outdone themselves. It's going out on a huge note. All of my favorite episodes are going to be in these last eight. This season is Hank's revenge.

Betsy Brandt, who plays Hank's wife, Marie:

(The finale is) true to each of the characters, to who they are. My last day, I didn't want to go into work. I was crying before I went into hair and makeup.

If those tidbits don't pique your curiosity about what's to come in the final episodes, check out these images released from AMC as part of a set of character portraits:

You can see the rest of the cast portraits here, but the above two are the ones that really jump out at me. How menacing is Jesse with that gun, and who's he pointing it at? What's with Skyler, Walt, and the mysterious burial?

My vague predictions are that Walt will kill Hank, but not before Hank ruins what's left of Walt's life -- and Jesse will kill Walt. But those are just guesses, because really, I have no idea. All I do know is I can't wait to find out.

A final word on Breaking Bad's ending, from Vince Gilligan:

I hope that for the vast majority of viewers it will be a satisfying ending. That was really what drove us, the writers and myself. And sometimes satisfaction and happiness are words that become somewhat interchangeable. I think actually there is a fair bit of distinction between them. I think what we’ve accomplished is a satisfying ending. There’s probably some happiness and some sadness going hand in hand. Suffice it to say, it’s not going to be all peaches and cream.

What do you think of these photos? Got any ideas about what we'll be seeing in the final eight shows?
