Mom Accused of Cancer Hoax Used 4-Year-Old to Get Cash Out of Strangers

Emily Creno KingAnother day. Another cancer hoax from an Ohio mom who allegedly claimed her 4-year-old was dying just to bilk people out of their hard-earned dollars. Wasn't it bad enough the first dozen times this happened in America? Do we really need yet another child being victimized by his mother, yet another mother being dragged into the courts to answer for a despicable lie?

Of course, Emily Creno King should answer for her alleged cancer scam. But what do these crimes do to society, to the people out there who are truly struggling?

Isn't it hard enough fundraising without scammers?

For years I shaved my head annually for St. Baldrick's, a legitimate charity that raises money for children with cancer. Year after year, I'd solicit donations, and year after year, it got harder to reach my goal. People just don't have extra money lying around, not in this economy.

And yet, when bad things happen to good people, they try. They open their wallets up and pull out a $20 for that little kid with cancer, for that father of four undergoing radiation. Despite the horror stories we read daily in the news, there are a lot of good people out there who would give you the shirts off their backs.

But then there are moms like this.

There are people who know that people are inherently good and who look for ways to work that to their advantage.

The result is a cancer scam that hurts a little boy -- 4-year-old JJ thought he was going to die because of the things his mother had allegedly done to him including forced medications, frequent visits to hospitals, and shaving his head -- and hurts a community as a whole.

There is a domino effect when people are burned by fundraising hoaxes like this. They stop donating out of fear that it will happen again.

Who can blame them? I don't want to give my hard earned cash to someone who is abusing my trust.

The trouble is, this leaves the people who truly need it with nowhere to turn. They are struggling in a bad economy with the typical health insurance issues, and they need help that won't come because someone else abused the system and used their innocent child to do it.

Emily Creno King is facing a third-degree felony charge for child endangerment, and cops are investigating claims that she took money and gifts from people across the country.

Could the punishment include some sort of community service to the very people screwed by scams like this?

Do you donate to private people in need? What stops you?

Military Dad Takes 4-Year-Old Daughter's Teddy Bear on Deployment and Shows Her the World

teddy bearWe see a lot of the heartwarming homecomings when military men and women reunite with their families after long deployments overseas. They're emotional and beautiful, and we wonder how they're able to make such a sacrifice. While nothing makes it easy, families do find ways to stay in touch and keep that bond though miles separate them. Coast Guard officer Gerald Orellana and his family provide a unique and heartwarming example.

According to a story at the Huffington Post, Orellana's daughter, Evelyn, gave him her prized stuffed teddy bear when he was about to leave for his deployment to the Arctic. Her mom, Irene, said Evelyn didn't want him to be lonely. "She knew that she and I would have each other, but Gerald wouldn't have our family."

So Gerald set out with "Evelynbear" in his suitcase, which is sweet enough. But it gets even sweeter.

Gerald didn't just keep the bear packed away in his suitcase and take her out once in awhile when no one was looking. He actually took Evelynbear on adventures with him, then sent pictures back to his wife and daughter to show just how much fun she was having.

There are pictures of the bear on the ship, in the snow, and in a cigar shop. She even has a uniform! Since Gerald will reportedly be deployed for the rest of year, we can only imagine what else they'll see her do. It's such a sweet and simple way for the family to share the experiences together even though they're worlds apart.

Nothing can make it painless to not have a parent there for the day-to-day activities and milestones, but things like this help ease the pain a bit.

What unique ways have you seen military family members keep in touch?

Bravo, Darla.

¿Esta actuación te mueve?

Police Overreact to Parents Posting Photo of Their 4-Year-Old With Beer Bottle

beer bottleParents are being investigated after they posted a photo of their 4-year-old daughter "drinking" out of a beer bottle. The caption underneath the Instagram photo was "German beer is goooudd! Haha already likes expensive bottles!" Instead of laughs, they got reported.

As a parent myself, I get the basic concept. Beer is bad for kids. Any alcohol is bad for children. Obviously. But isn't this sort of an iconic photo we all have from our childhood? Remember how HILARIOUS it is to pretend like our kid is drinking? I know I have that photo in my family album and my parents were practically teetotalers.

I also know I have seen it in many other kids' albums. It's not a big deal. As I recall, the smell of beer even made me sick until I was well over the legal age. So why are these parents getting so much flak?

We might need to take a few steps back in cases like these. Is it funny? Not to everyone. I actually don't have this photo of my own children. But honestly, that's less because I am offended and more just because I think it's overplayed. I know I have seen it on Facebook and no one bats an eye. We KNOW our friends are good parents and wouldn't give their toddler beer. But I guess people don't know the same about these parents who posted the photo on the Instagram account of Davinci Tattoo and Piercing.

The parents, for their part, have said it was water in the bottle and I tend to believe them. Even if I WANTED to get my 5- or 6-year-old to try beer or wine, I know they wouldn't. They have sniffed at our glasses and looked at us like we were insane.

"How can you drink that?" my daughter asked. It's an acquired taste. So the likelihood of a 4-year-old loving beer to the point where she would turn the bottle upside down in her mouth seems pretty low.

It's a lot more likely that this was a joke and people took it too seriously. I think we all need to take a few steps back and reevaluate ourselves when we feel the need to freak out over things we might not even understand.

Do you have that photo in your baby album?

Dad Sues Store Because Boots Made His 4-Year-Old Daughter Trip

girl bootsHave you ever met a parent who is always looking to blame someone when anything happens to their child? Well, I haven't met Shahan Stephanian, but my guess is he may be one of those.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the man from Pasadena, Calif., recently filed a lawsuit against Nordstrom. He says an employee at the store who was fitting his 4-year-old daughter for boots, put her in some that too big for her. Apparently she measured at about a size 11-12, but the employee had her try a 13 so there would be room to grow (something I actually appreciate as a parent). When the employee told her to walk toward a shelf to see how they felt, she tripped and hit her head.

Ouch. Apparently, it was a pretty hard fall as the lawsuit claims she suffered "serious injuries to her person. Said injuries include a laceration to her left eyebrow and eyelid area, which has left a permanent and very noticeable scar.”

I feel bad for her. I bet Nordstrom felt bad for her. But to sue over this incident is ridiculous, especially now since this happened in 2006! Nordstrom issued a statement saying they have let Stephanian know several times that they "welcome the opportunity to resolve his issues directly." But apparently he's not interested in something that civil.

The lawsuit says the girl was "too young to appreciate the danger of walking in boots that were too large or did not fit properly.” It claims the sales person "had a duty to use reasonable care to present the plaintiff with boots that were safe and of an appropriate size so that plaintiff would not have difficulty walking in said boots and/or would not stumble or fall while walking in said boots."

Her mother was there shopping with her, so she definitely could have intervened at any point. If anyone should be accountable, it's definitely her, but daddy doesn't see it that way -- probably because all the dollar signs in his eyes are in the way.

The bottom line is that it was an accident. Those happen a lot in life, and suing for something like this is just ridiculous. The worst part of it is the example this man is setting for his daughter -- to not take responsibility for yourself and your family but to pass blame whenever you can ... especially when there's something to potentially gain.

What do you think of this lawsuit?
