the great brainWe all know reading aloud to your kids is one of the best activities you can share with your child. Not only does it nurture their literacy, it's also a treasured bonding ritual for families. Those bedtime stories tend to drop off once kids get old enough to read to themselves. But personally, I just can't give it up. I still love reading to my 9-year-old son before bedtime. And it turns out the research is on my side: Kids who know how to read still benefit from read-aloud time with their parents. And parents? If you pick the right books, you'll enjoy this reading time, too. Here are some of my favorite "big kid" chapter books to read aloud.

A Series of Unfortunate Events: Lemony Snicket's 13-volume series is wild fun, not least because of the delicious way he plays with language. The series turns darker and more serious about halfway through, with some thought-provoking questions ripe for discussion.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Or any Roald Dahl book. This is another author with a playful way with words. His characters are daring, creative, and inspiring -- and not a little mischievous.

The Great Brain: I adopted my best Wyatt Earp drawl to read this series about growing up in rural Utah in the early 20th century. Your kids will love hearing about what frontier life was like 100 years ago. You'll cringe at all the fist fights, but it's all good, innocent fun.

Little House on the Prairie: Your kids will love this classic series for the same reason. Laura Ingalls and her family carve out a life in the Midwest, braving storms and engaging in nose-to-tail eating way before it was trendy.

The Little Prince: This sweet tale is a little melancholic and a lot magical. Imagine living alone on your own tiny planet -- what kid can't relate to that?

The Chronicles of Narnia: Kids entering a magical realm without their parents, fighting battles -- what's not to love about that? I loved all the brave but flawed children in this fantasy series.

A Wrinkle in Time: This is one of the best novels for kids who feel like misfits. Awkward Meg and her genius little brother Charles Wallace travel through space and time to find their lost father. There's a none-too-subtle critique of conformity that I happen to love.

Tuck Everlasting: What happen when a family finds the fountain of youth? A very lonely forever. This sweet fantasy tale will give you plenty to talk over with your kids.

What are your favorite kids' chapter books to read aloud with your kids?

jimmy fallon breaking bad spoofWith only six more months left of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon until he takes over for Leno and just three episodes left of Breaking Bad until that turns into a spinoff called Better Call Saul (um, no thanks), it makes total sense the two amazingnesses combined. And that they did in a parody no one could have done as well as Jimmy Fallon. That's Jimmy by the way in this photo. Not Walter White. Jimmy!

There are some great cameos in this spoof called Joking Bad. And it brings back some of our favorite moments from Breaking Bad. Check it out, but prepare yourself for unexpected cameos and some serious laughs ... and seeing Gus laugh his ass off. Literally!

"Let's joke, bitch!"

Did you catch the whiteboard behind Steve Higgins (Jesse) and Jimmy (Walt) with the equation: Anthony Weiner + One Direction = One Erection? Joking bad!! Higgins and Fallon capture their meth makers to perfection. Like Blue. Heisenberg-approved. Ad Miles makes a great Hank. A skinny Hank, but a great Hank.

I always get confused when I see Bryan Cranston with a full head of hair and loved seeing him pop up in the audience of Fallon's show, along with Jesse. I mean, Aaron Paul. I mean, MY GOSH HE'S SO CUTE! Don't die, Jesse. Please don't die. Aaron gives Fallon a "boooo bitch!" and Cranston throws a pizza at him. Perfect! Just like seeing Jay Leno at the end.

I'm thrilled Jimmy's taking over for Leno. Not thrilled Breaking Bad is almost over ... forever. I'll take a Jesse spin-off instead please.

What was your favorite moment from Joking Bad?

fudge sundae pieAny combo of two different desserts in one is a winner, as far as I'm concerned. Ice cream cake usually takes the cake, but let's not forget that you can also make an ice cream PIE. And I don't just mean a slice of pie a la mode. (Although that is delicious, too!)

Take, for instance, this recipe for fudge sundae pie, which is ridiculously easy and requires so few ingredients, you could probably whip one up on a whim. Not that I'm trying to tempt you or anything like that ...

Fudge Sundae Pie from AllRecipes.com

1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup miniature marshmallows
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 (12 ounce) package vanilla wafers
1 quart vanilla ice cream, softened
1/4 cup pecans

Directions:

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine evaporated milk, chocolate chips, marshmallows, and salt; stir until chocolate and marshmallows melt and mixture smoothes and thickens. Remove from heat and let cool.Line a 9-inch pie plate with vanilla wafers. Spoon half of ice cream over wafers and spread evenly, then top with half of chocolate/marshmallow mixture. Repeat layers and top with pecans; freeze 3 to 5 hours, until firm.Click the "Like" button below to get a tasty recipe every day on Facebook. Maressa Brown ABOUT THE AUTHOR Maressa Brown

sister wivesIt's funny how the whole jealousy thing plays out on Sister Wives, isn't it? I mean, I think it's safe to say that the main reason any of us tunes into the show is an unshakeable sense of morbid curiosity: Will one of the wives have an envy-driven freakout this week?! Most of the time, sadly, the answer to this question is NO. But it looks like tonight's episode might be the exception ...

So we're all more than aware of the big tense raincloud that's been looming over the Brown bunch: Will the new houses be ready in time for Christmas?! Well, tonight Robyn finds out that her house is finally finished. YAY!! Robyn is SO happy. Things are PERFECT. Until that real estate agent lady informs the family that Christine's house is ready, too.

And then somehow Robyn is all bummed and put out. Huh?! See, this is what I mean about the jealousy thing playing out in a funny way. Robyn's not jealous about her husband sleeping with 3 other women, but she IS jealous that one of those women's homes is complete on the same day as her own? I don't get it. Is attention more important to Robyn than anything else? Of course in the end Robyn realizes that supporting her Sister Wives is the whole point of, um, her life I guess, but still.

Are you surprised that Robyn was jealous about Christine's house?

Ice Cream Donut Sandwiches Could Kill You, But at Least You'll Die Happy

ice cream donut sandwichDonuts have starred in some unlikely pairings ... They've been merged with croissants to create the cronut, and they've been used as bread in a breakfast sandwich. Now comes the one I am most excited about BY FAR: The ice cream donut sandwich. OMG.

Available exclusively (for now!) at Firecakes Donuts on Chicago's Near North Side, the sandwiches are exactly what they sound like -- a glazed donut stuffed with either homemade vanilla or espresso ice cream. The donut shop has been serving them for just $4 apiece since July 20, according to Chicagoist. What's more, you can get your fix until midnight (except for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday).

Why did I not know about this when I was in the Windy City recently?! Also, why hasn't this been an ice cream parlor staple FOR YEARS?

Ahhh, but Firecakes isn't the only place tempting us with this unfathomably delicious treat. Similar concoctions are popping up in places like DC and NYC, where various bakeries have apparently been serving 'em for yeeears.

To be fair, it sounds so gluttonous and must have so much flippin' sugar that it could probably put the healthiest person on the planet into a diabetic shock, so it's probably best that it's not THAT readily available.

But if it were to be quite a bit more available and take off in a hot new dessert trend that rivals red velvet cupcakes and cake pops and macarons, I wouldn't be surprised. The donut ice cream sandwich has something going for it that the cronut and donut breakfast sandwich never had ... It just makes sense. And makes the mouth water just writing those words. Oof, watch out, America ... we are in trouble!

Would you try an ice cream donut sandwich? What would your ultimate donut indulgence look like?
