Bomb-Throwing Beauty Queen Shows an Ugly Side

pageant tiaraWell THIS is not the kind of behavior we expect from our beauty queens. Utah teen pageant winner Kendra McKenzie Gill pled guilty for tossing homemade bottle bombs. The charge is officially "attempted possession of a chemical device." Kendra will have to pay a $500 fee and do 200 hours of community service, and then the charges will be dropped from her record. She also won't face federal charges as part of her plea bargain. So it's a good thing she entered that plea -- but wow, I bet her pageant days are over.

So here's what Kendra and a couple of friends had been up to. Basically they were driving around, throwing plastic water bottles filled with toilet bowl cleaner, which reacted to the aluminum foil inside, into people's yards. I guess it's the geeky science project version of driving by and shooting up people's mailboxes. No one was harmed by the prank, but imagine if a toddler had been hiding behind the shrubs at the last minute.

This same young lady had just won a $2,000 scholarship from a beauty pageant, partly because of her performance of a Scott Joplin piano piece. Now she could have her title revoked. And she may never get to compete in a Miss Utah or Miss America pageant -- you have to have a clean criminal record to compete.

Aren't these pagent girls supposed to be exemplary or something? Aren't they supposed to be so busy training they have no time for such mischief? I can see how the pressure might make you want to goof off, but this is too much. What a total disregard for the safety of others. Not to mention, now I want to make jokes about being a bombshell -- oh never mind. I'm not going there! (In writing, anyway...) Mostly it's just sad Kendra isn't as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. AWW! Did I make you throw up a little in your mouth? Sorry, I had to say it.

Are you surprised that a pageant winner would behave this way?

The Royal Baby Name: The Queen Will Decide!

Queen ElizabethNow that Kate Middleton has given birth and showed off the brand new Prince of Cambridge to the world, we all have one burning question on our minds. When are we going to find out the royal baby name? The suspense is killing us, and we can only hope that she and Prince William choose something soon and share it with the rest of the world so we can all sleep at night. (Kidding. Sort of.)

But according to sources who are close to the Middleton family, Kate and Wills have selected a name -- but they have to run it by Queen Elizabeth and get her approval before it's officially given to their child.

Hmm. Her Majesty did go and visit her new great-grandson at Kensington Palace today -- so was there any sort of discussion about what to call the newest member of the family?

Maybe. But can you imagine how much pressure Prince William and Kate must be feeling over making sure they pick a name the Queen will approve of? (Ugh. What a drag.)

I mean, I know being part of the royal family comes with a whole host of traditions that must be followed, but still -- it's their baby, not the Queen's. Shouldn't they have the final say over what their son's name will be instead of letting his great-grandmother make the call?

My husband I and decided on our own son's name when I was about four or five months pregnant -- and there's no way we would've let our family members try and sway us in another direction if they didn't agree with it. We got very lucky in the fact that they all loved his name and still do to this day, but it would've been horrible to have our choice slammed when it was a name we had our hearts set on.

The general consensus seems to be that Kate and Prince William will choose a very traditional name for their child, like James or George. But considering what a modern couple they are, there is the chance that they'll want to go out on a limb and call the royal baby something more unique. (I vote for Spencer!) And what if they have the ideal name picked out, but the Queen totally shoots it down and forbids them to use it? That will really suck.

A mom and dad's first choice for a baby name is pretty tough thing to part with when they've already envisioned calling their little one something in particular, so for their sake, let's hope the Queen goes along with whatever they choose so everyone is happy and they can go on celebrating this joyous time in their lives.

Did anyone in your family try and influence your choice for a baby name?

queen elizabeth IIJust when we thought the big news out of the U.K. this week would be the birth of Kate Middleton and Prince William's little Prince or Princess, the Queen Elizabeth II had to go and upstage the royal baby watch by making her own history! Her Royal Highness signed a bill making gay marriage legal throughout England and Wales. Whoohoo!

The signing was a formality, after the bill cleared its final hurdle in the lower house of the country's parliament yesterday. Scotland and Ireland still aren't all caught up -- Scotland may make gay marriage legal by 2015, but Protestant parties defeated a marriage equality law in Northern Ireland earlier this year -- but still, what an awesome, BOLD move for England and Wales! So bold that the Telegraph calls it "one of the most radical pieces of social legislation of her reign."

Radical, perhaps, but also so progressive and so about-damn-time!

England and Wales clearly have a lot to celebrate today, but this is also a lesson for those of us on this side of the pond. That despite our recent victories -- doing away with DOMA and legalizing same-sex marriage in various states -- we should be a little bit ashamed of ourselves that we can't get a sweeping measure passed at the federal level.

If sweeping measures like DOMA and Don't Ask, Don't Tell that stood in the way of equality could be passed 20 years ago, we can figure out a way to pass legislation that does the opposite today. After all, we pride ourselves on being pretty forward-thinking, cutting-edge, right? But today, looking at what the British government has done, we're not nearly as progressive as we fancy ourselves.

What do you think of the legalization of same-sex marriage in England? What do you think it will take to accomplish the same here?

kourtney kardashianWe need to talk about Penelope Disick's first birthday party for a minute, guys. There was a famous party planner involved; about 150 of Penelope's nearest and dearest in attendance; and balloons. Lots of balloons. The day sounds, and from Instagram, looks, like it was absolutely gorgeous. But a party that elaborate for a 12-month-old? That's cray.

I get that it's Kourtney's money and she'll spend it on her adorable daughter if she wants to. But I just cannot wrap my head around the whole "big" first birthday party thing. Not for a second.

I totally understand wanting to celebrate your child's first year of life -- and you, surviving your first year of parenthood -- but your kid isn't going to remember the party; they'll probably be a little overwhelmed; and there's a good chance they'll sleep through a big portion of the event. Again, I fully realize that it's your baby -- or in this case, Kourtney's baby -- but I can't imagine forking over a ton o' cash for a party for a baby. The older your child gets, the more they'll realize what a party is -- and the more they'll want one.

Until my daughter gets a bit older, I'm more of a small gathering kind of gal. And so is my child, apparently.

Did you throw your baby a big first birthday party?

Tina Turner’s Husband-to-Be Erwin Bach: 12 Facts About Man Who Nabbed ‘The Queen of Rock’

Tina Turner Erwin BachRecent Vogue cover girl Tina Turner is reportedly engaged to be married to her longtime love, Erwin Bach. I couldn't be happier for the couple, who seem to be a true match made in heaven -- something Turner sure deserved after her horrible marriage to Ike Turner all those years ago.

So who is this fellow Erwin Bach, the man who's held the affection of the Queen of Rock for over 25 years? We did some digging!

1. He is an extremely successful -- and wealthy! -- music mogul: Bach's fortune is reportedly worth $50 million. (Not that his bride-to-be needs his money -- Turner's 50th anniversary tour raked in over $130 million!)

2. At 57, Bach is 16 years younger than his lady love. Though, in an awesome interview from years ago, Tina says they balance each other out because, at heart, "He's really 50 and I'm really 15!" LOVE. IT.

3. Bach was born in Germany, but he and Tina have lived primarily at their home in Zurich, Switzerland for the last 15 years. (Um, yes, obviously they have several properties, including a second home on the French Riviera. Duh.)

4. They've been together for 27 years! That's, like, 27 times longer than many celebrity marriages.

5. Bach and Turner met at an EMI record label party in 1985. They were "just friends" though for a year before they got romantically involved.

6. Turner turned down Bach's first proposal!

7. Turner and Bach were reported to have finally gotten engaged last April.

8. Wait -- he might actually ALREADY be married ... to Turner? News outlets reported the couple got secretly married a few weeks ago! We'll just assume that's not true for now.

9. We know a few things about the wedding too! The date is reportedly set for July 21 in Switzerland (where Tina became a national citizen last April).

10. The honor of designing Tina's wedding gown will go to Giorgio Armani, who reportedly will also be a guest at the event.

11. What should you wear if you're lucky enough to get an invitation? White! That's because Turner has been a practicing Buddhist since the early 1970s.

12. When asked once what Tina loves most about her sweetie, she replied, "HIM! -- Just him -- he is great!"

Who are some of your favorite long-term celebrity couples?
