OMG, this story makes me furious!!! A woman has actually lost her home because of a $6 bill. Yes, I'm not making this up!! The woman, Eileen Battisti, owned a $280,000 home in Pennsylvania. When her husband died, she was in the process of taking over all of the finances, which can be an arduous endeavor, let me assure you, and somehow $6.30 in interest on a property tax bill got overlooked. And apparently no one bothered to tell Battisti about it. Soon, interest and penalties accrued and the tax bill was up to $235. And then ... somehow ... horribly ... the house went to auction, with Battisti still living there. And was sold!

She appealed the sale, but the court actually ruled she had received all proper notices and the sale was final.

No one sits on a $6 bill when your house might be sold out from underneath you. This MUST have been a mistake.

Reportedly, Battisti was not only dealing with the death of her husband, but other personal issues as well. It's not stated what these issues were, but I can see a bill going unnoticed for months at a time if you're in the hospital or a family member is, or you're dealing with something else that's major.

Most of these bills come in plain white envelopes and you don't know what the hell they are anyway. And most of us get so much junk mail, you can't tell one thing from another. I've mistakenly let important notices go unopened for months because I thought it was junk mail -- which I admit I have a habit of letting pile up.

No one from the county could, say, give this woman a call?!!

But there is some hope. Another judge has ruled that Battisti -- who still hasn't moved out of her home -- deserves another hearing. Her lawyer insists that despite what the town says, there was NOT sufficient notice of what was happening and there were extenuating circumstances.

As someone who has had to step in suddenly and deal with three different estates and the bills of family members who suddenly died or got sick, let me tell you, it's a strenuous process, and no one helps you, least of all the people billing you. I remember I almost had a heart attack trying to pay off my relative's Internet bill -- since I didn't have her account number, no one would let me pay her bill.

The county tax collector's office should have picked up the damn phone and asked this woman why she hadn't paid a $6 bill before they put it into foreclosure. That's the human thing to do. Whatever happened to being human?

Give the woman her house back!

Have you ever been screwed over by the system for a tiny bill?

man and raccoonIf wanting Marc "Coon Rippy" Brown to keep his pet raccoon is wrong, I don't want to be right. I'm sorry, I know it's illegal to keep wild animals. It's dangerous and can be bad for them. But have you seen this guy?

Let me back up a bit. The self-professed hillbilly from Gallatin, Tennessee, recently took the Internet by storm when a video of him dancing with his pet raccoon, Gunshow, to Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" went viral. There he is in his overalls, jamming out and dancing with abandon while his raccoon dances with him ... sort of. He followed that up with a video of him showering with another pet raccoon, Rebekah. They're both all sorts of weird and wonderful.

Only not everyone agrees about the wonderful part.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency got wind of his unusual pets and stepped in to enforce the law. While Gunshow has since passed away, they confiscated Rebekah. They say it's illegal to keep wild animals as pets and took her to a wildlife rehabilitation center.

Now poor Brown is left coonless, and he wants his pet back. He's appealing to the governor and has taken to the media to try and get his story out there. He says that while he did break the law, plenty of people do so all the time, and just because he posted a cool video, he shouldn't be punished. In an interview with Vice, he said:

My argument with them was that if this is the case, then every elementary school and biology class in high school and college is in violation if they've got tadpoles in an aquarium or a garter snake, or even if a child brings a box turtle to show-and-tell.

But when you have a raccoon on your shoulder in the shower and you make a viral video, if you've already had one viral video under your belt, it kind of draws a little attention to yourself.

As a former animal control officer himself, he says that not everyone should have a pet raccoon. He says you have to have some experience and know what you're doing.

You can't just raise it if you haven't a clue what to do. And I happen to know. It's just one of my areas of expertise. Some people are experts in electricity. Some people are experts at working on automobiles. Some people are experts at heart surgery. I happen to be an expert at whispering to 'coons, I guess.

So no, he's not setting the best example, but if ever there was an exception to be made to this law, this has got to be it. Here he is making his plea to get Rebekah back. See if you don't agree.

Do you think he should get Rebekah back?

Myles KerrAs parents we do what we can to set a good example for our children and teach them to do what's right. Sometimes, however, it's a stranger who steps in and makes an impact that is priceless. That's exactly what Marine Myles Kerr recently did for a young boy in a story that will give you goosebumps.

According to The Huffington Post, 9-year-old Brandon Fuchs was running the Jeff Drench Memorial 5K in Charlevoix, Michigan, when he somehow lost the group of people with whom he was running. He was struggling to keep going, then he saw Kerr, and asked him, "Sir? Will you please run with me?"

Without hesitation Kerr did so, and for the rest of the race, he ran with him. According to a post on the Facebook page Seal of Honor, he was the boy's personal pep squad, urging him on to finish and not leaving his side until he crossed the finish line and helped him find his party.

Kerr finished last in his age division ... five seconds after Fuchs.

It gives you chills, right? I think of my son, who's also 9, in the same predicament, and how incredibly grateful I would be to someone who did this for him. Not only for helping him through the race, but for showing him that it's not always about winning, and for setting an example of what it means to be a man.

Fuchs' parents were grateful indeed, and according to a Tweet from Kerr, they rewarded him with a $100 gift certificate to a restaurant, which I'm sure was but a small token of their amazing gratitude. As for his kind gesture, for which he has received kudos from far and wide, Kerr is modest. He tweeted: "I was just doing what any man would do, but thank you!"

It's what any man should do, but unfortunately not all do. We spend so much time worrying about the dangers and evil out there in the world, and warning our kids of stranger danger, so this is an amazing reminder that there are great people out there in the world, people to whom they can and should look up to. We salute you, Lance Corporal Kerr!

What's the nicest thing anyone has done for your child?

Talia Joy CastellanoTalia Joy Castellano, the little girl diagnosed with neuroblastoma and leukemia who was well-known for her amazing makeup tutorials, passed away this morning at age 13. It's heartbreaking, to say the least. The inspirational teen was named a CoverGirl back in 2012 on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and has been video blogging about both her makeup tips and her cancer status for a little over a year now.

Castellano posted her last vlog (as she liked to call them) one month ago from her hospital bed talking about her intense pain, radiation treatment, and severe anxiety. And as sad as the loss must be for her family and all of the people she touched through her creativity and bright spirit, it's so heartwarming to see her just as optimistic and outgoing in her last video as she was in her very first.

Her parents ... they raised an amazing daughter.

Talia's blogs showcased a confident girl, despite losing her hair. Sure, she touched on the subject of cancer often; however, she was more concerned with educating her YouTube followers on new makeup tips and trends, and loved to give step-by-step tutorials.

It was clear through the comments on Talia's YouTube channel that viewers appreciated her spirit. I know I sure did. There she was, a beautiful young woman showing me how to clean makeup brushes instead of bumming around about her condition. That is a strength that is admirable. That is a daughter that had positive role models as parents. That is the clear display of a girl who had a positive outlook and a heart of gold.

Today, we remember Talia. Watch her last vlog detailing her cancer treatment, here:

Are you inspired by Talia's story?
