Emmy Awards' Cory Monteith Tribute Is Brutally Honest About His Death

Emmy Awards Cory Monteith tributeThe Emmy Awards tribute to Cory Monteith had created a surprising amount of controversy before the awards show even aired. Some, like Jack Klugman's son Adam, accused the ceremony's producers of glorifying someone who died at his own hands. And then, Jane Lynch got up onstage and told it like it is: her Glee co-star wasn't perfect. He was a drug addict who died because of his addiction.

It wasn't your typical tribute. Memorials tends to speak in glowing terms of the deceased.

But in telling the truth about how Cory Monteith died, Lynch did something better.

She made the tribute to Cory mean something more to the world than just a chance to remember a good actor.

As Lynch said:

Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many of us here tonight can relate to. His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction.

Tonight we remember Cory for all he was and mourn the loss of all he could have been.

And there it is, folks: why mourning Cory Monteith in front of a world's audience made sense.

Klugman's son had accused the ceremony's producers of playing to a "youth-centric culture that has an extremely short attention span and panders to only a very narrow demographic."

Lynch's tribute to her Glee co-star was the very opposite. It was a warning to the youth of America, an arrow straight to their hearts: life is short; don't screw around.

Monteith's death wasn't part of the natural course of things. He wasn't an elderly man who'd contributed decades of work to the entertainment industry, only to die peacefully of something related to his age. Is he someone today's youth can relate to better than someone who hasn't graced a television screen in years? Perhaps, but that's all the more reason why the Emmy's tribute worked. There was a stark difference between the tribute to Monteith and those to Jonathan Winters and Jean Stapleton that preceded it.

Winters and Stapleton had done much, gotten far.

They were old.

And their tributes were uncomplicated by talk of "imperfection" and "addiction."

Cory Monteith died before he got to do most of what he could have done. His youth, his superstardom, was not enough to save him.

And to cement just what it was we lost, Lynch offered a reminder that there was more to Monteith than just the drugs:

All that warmth and that charm, that open-hearted quality that we loved in Cory was no act. This gifted and wonderful young man was worthy of your love.

If you were lucky enough to know Cory as we did and witness firsthand Cory's goofy, breezy sense of humor, his natural instinct for inclusiveness and his unbridled sense of generosity day in and day out, I promise, you'd have loved him even more.

What did you think of the tribute to Cory? Was it appropriate?

Plans to Honor Cory Monteith at Emmy Awards Create an Unexpected Backlash

Cory MonteithIt's been over two months since Cory Monteith's untimely, tragic passing, yet his name is still making headlines, this time because of a controversy brewing in regards to the Emmy Awards. It seems that in addition to the "In Memoriam" segment, on Sunday, the Emmys will separately honor Cory, James Gandolfini, Gary David Goldberg, Jean Stapleton, and Jonathan Winters.

And apparently this has some people very, very angry.

Many commenters are saying Cory didn't have enough of a career to be honored with the other four on this list. They're pissed that Andy Griffith was passed over. And they're saying that the Emmys are glamorizing his OD by making such a huge deal in honoring the death of a druggie.

Suffice to say: Wow, people on the Internet sure can be a bunch of insensitive jerks.

Look, I don't agree with the decision to single out actors who have passed away as somehow being more "honor-worthy" than the others, but their decision to include Cory makes sense. Cory and the cast of Glee spoke to a younger demographic. The ratings game is all about harnessing this young demographic, and the producers behind the Emmys probably thought this tribute would be a good way to lure them in and get them to watch the show (it may sound insensitive, but that's how our sick, sad world works).

Many 18-year-olds know who Cory is and that he passed away a couple months ago. Sad to say, but ask them who Jonathan Winters (a comedic genius and pioneer) was, and they'd probably shrug and continue playing Candy Crush on their iPhone.

Anyway, each of these tributes will be delivered by costars and close friends. For example, Edie Falco will be remembering Gandolfini, with whom she worked on The Sopranos, while Jane Lynch will be talking about Cory. Of course fans of Glee will tune in to see what Jane has to say about her fallen costar.

Not only does it feel weird debating who is and isn't worthy of being on this list since these actors are no longer with us, the things people have been saying about Cory have been cold, cruel, and completely unnecessary. He was one of the lead actors on an extremely popular television show, and many fans, young and old, were touched by and are still trying to process his death. There's no doubt that he had talent and legions of fans, and he was very open and honest about his struggles with addiction. Instead of "sensationalizing" his drug use, we can only hope that Lynch will talk about her friend in a way that shows how drugs can easily cut off a life and career that had so much promise. And, come on, no one's giving him an Emmy here.

So let's stop dissecting Cory's career and saying that he's a "minor" actor and that how he died makes him any more or less worthy to be on this list. We should be placing blame on the Emmys who are saying that one star's death is more important to honor than another's. Regardless, it's a shame that Cory's passing has led to this kind of exploitative controversy.

What do you think about Cory Monteith's inclusion on the "special" Emmys "In Memoriam" segment?

Lea Michele's First Birthday Without Cory Monteith Can't Be Easy

Lea Michele 27 BirthdayToday we wish a very, very happy birthday to Lea Michele. Glee's shining star is turning 27 today.

I feel bad for her. No, not just because she shares the same birthday as Courtney Stodden, but because birthdays are usually such a celebration, turning another year older in your 20s, that's usually fun. But this birthday marks the first of many Lea will face without her boyfriend Cory Monteith by her side, who died July 13 at 31 years old. This birthday is the one that he was planning a "big surprise" for before he passed. One that now she'll never have.

So how will she be spending her big 2-7? An insider tells Life & Style that Michele is celebrating "with her girlfriends" and will have "a low-key night."

Man. Grieving when you want to be celebrating. I've been there. You've probably been there. It's never, never easy.

None of us can control when the unexpected horrors of life occur, but they do. There are so many times when you want to celebrate something, whether it be a birthday, an engagement, finishing your first big marathon, or whatever the case may be, and there's a bigger tragic event looming over your head. In those scenarios, it's natural to feel sad even though it's a happy occasion. It's natural to want to hide even though others around you may want to rejoice.

The important thing is that even during a time of grief, you can't get mad at yourself when you don't want to feel sad. Bad things happen. It's the natural progression of life and time that, sooner or later, you will move forward emotionally.

Today, I hope that despite being without Cory, Lea smiles. Today, I'm glad to hear that the starlet will be surrounded by her girlfriends, handling this happy occasion the best way she knows how. Today, I hope she thinks of all of the great things she's done, and looks forward to the next 27 years (and more) ahead of her.

Happiest of birthdays, Lea.

Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang)
Mark Salling (Puck)
Jayma Mays (Emma Pillsbury)
Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones)
Romy Rosemont (Carole Hudson-Hummel, madre de Finn)
Mike o ' Malley (Burt Hummel, padre de Finn)
Dot-Marie Jones (entrenador Beiste)

Cory Monteith 'Glee' Tribute Episode Spoilers Reveal How Rachel Berry Will Grieve Finn Hudson

Personalmente, no espero nada menos.

¿Y quién no?

Lea Michele Wants Cory Monteith 'Glee' Tribute to Tell the Truth About Drug Addiction

Cory Monteith and Lea MicheleEvery day, there are new details coming out about how the Glee crew is going to handle the tragedy that is Cory Monteith's July 13 death on the FOX show. So far, what we know about the Cory Monteith tribute episode, set for October 10, is minimal. We've heard that the actors will be sitting down as themselves, addressing their best memories about their lost friend. We've also heard from creator Ryan Murphy that Cory's character Finn will die on the show as well. Now, a source is telling Us Weekly what Lea Michele wants for the tribute episode.

"Lea wants it to reflect the truth, to warn people of what can happen," a source tells Us Weekly.

That's ... brave. Hard drug use isn't a light topic to cover on a TV show with such a young demographic like Glee. Just like with the school shooting episode, something tells me that the October episode dealing with the drug-related death of Finn is going to be a heavy-hitter.

With that said, though, I think it's the right choice. I think that sometimes, it's easier to have some of life's most difficult conversations when prompted by the things we see on television. Do parents want their kids and teenagers doing drugs? Of course not, never. But seeing some of their favorite TV characters handling the difficult passing of someone because of hard drugs, it starts the dialogue.

Lea wants to warn audiences about the dangers of hard drug use, and that's exactly what she'll be doing. Cory's death was a chilling reminder that anyone, no matter their background, can fall victim to the horrible effects of addiction. Something tells me that the upcoming ep will have both Glee fans and the media talking for weeks to come.

What would you like to see in the October 10 episode?

'Glee's Chris Colfer Has to Grieve Over Cory Monteith in His Own Way (VIDEO)

Chris ColferChris Colfer, who plays Kurt Hummel on Glee, has opened up about the death of his friend and costar, Cory Monteith. He sat down with The Huffington Post to talk about the return of the cast to Glee and was naturally asked about Cory. I imagine it must be tough to be on Glee right now, as this is the first question anyone is going to ask. But it just goes to show how beloved Cory, and the show, are. The interviewer asked him about how he was doing in the wake of Cory's tragic death. He said:

It's difficult because it's hard to mourn someone, but it's another thing to mourn someone with the world.

He then went on to say how fans actually have TOLD him how to mourn. Which is kind of bizarre. But listen.

Chris said:

I think a line needs to be drawn, because it's really unnerving to get messages from people, from 12-year-olds in Nebraska telling you how to mourn and telling you how to pay your respects.

People telling you how to mourn is just insensitive, but many of us have probably done it and probably didn't mean to be insensitive. Chris is talking about young fans, and they are certainly too young to know how to respond to death and to deal with death. But adults do it too. All it takes is saying something like, "When do you think you'll be over it?" or "Why don't you talk about him more?" or "You shouldn't throw/give away her clothes, you might want them someday!"

The reality is that everyone mourns differently. Some people may want reminders of the loved one around. To look at pictures or video of him or her every day. To talk about him or her every day. Some prefer not to. That doesn't mean that the person isn't being mourned. But some people prefer to do it more privately or to try to "move on" by not being constantly reminded of the person.

I've had a lot of people I loved die, and I've never been one to cling tenaciously to "things" that the person owned or wore. I have pictures of loved ones who have passed on in view -- but for a long time I couldn't even look at photos of my niece, who died at 7. If anyone thought that was insensitive, they would be wrong. But I burst out crying in hysterics each time I looked at her, and I just got to the point where that was seriously affecting my health and job.

Ditto pets that I've loved. I keep their ashes, their photos, but it's hard for me to look at them. I had a video of my cat that I had for 16 years and I looked at it precisely once. Of course, I burst into racking sobs. I decided not to do that again.

That isn't to say that I'm not grieving and not processing. But I'm more likely to want to tell stories about someone along the lines of, "I remember when so-and-so and I went to ..." rather than, "I can't believe so-and-so isn't here! I miss him/her so much!"

That's just the way I am, and everyone is different.

The cast of Glee may find themselves in an awkward situation where they are all expected to grieve the same. Getting together on set may mean that some people will want to talk about him. Others may not.

It's always difficult to know how to approach someone who has had a loved one die. I remember seeing an acquaintance of mine whose sister had passed away a few years before. As we said our hellos, my mind was nudging me to say something about her sister. And yet I had no idea if that is what she would have wanted. Maybe she didn't want to be reminded of her at that particular moment. I didn't know where in her grieving process she was. So I didn't bring her sister up. And then I felt bad that I didn't.

Grieving is one of the most difficult, most painful, and most private of emotions. Let everyone who is grieving do so in the way they feel is right for them.

Have you ever been told how to grieve?

lea michele cory monteith gleeThe wheels are officially turning on the Glee tribute episode for Cory Monteith, which we've heard for a while now is planned to be the third episode of the upcoming, fifth season. We're hearing whisperings that Ryan Murphy & co. are discussing the best approach, and what's more, Lea Michele is co-creating the emotional episode.

An insider shares, "The producers are still going back and forth on what they want to do and clearing music for his tribute. The meetings are lengthy, and Lea is a part of them to make sure everything is just right."

Wow ...

We knew she was talented, and we knew she was brave to stand by Cory's side as he battled his demons in rehab, but this only goes to show that she's so strong. It's beyond admirable that she's clearly been able to pull herself up by the bootstraps to do this. I can't even imagine just how difficult and challenging it must be for everyone, but especially for Lea.

More from The Stir: Fast-Approaching Final Season of 'Glee' Will Leave Us Heartbroken ... Again (VIDEO)

Still, as a fellow perfectionist Virgo, I'm not surprised. I'd bet she feels it's almost an obligation to be involved in these talks and the planning. She wants to ensure that the memorial for her beloved late boyfriend is spot-on. But of course that's going to mean having to face heavy emotions throughout the process. The source tells HollywoodLife.com:

When they start filming the PSAs and the third episode, that is going to be a mess. After they film that episode they are going to go on a break to recharge. ... It’s still touch and go for all involved. Tears can and will happen at anytime.

Aww, ugh, our hearts are still breaking for Lea and everyone in the cast and crew. But it sounds like everyone is doing as well as can be expected ... And given Lea's involvement, we can expect a moving, touching tribute that remembers Cory in the best possible way.

What are your thoughts on Lea taking the reins on Cory's tribute?

Lea MicheleSince Cory Monteith died so suddenly and tragically, we've all been wondering how his girlfriend and Glee costar Lea Michele is doing. From the looks of it, she is holding up and was photographed yesterday for the first time since his death as she traveled in a car with a friend in Los Angeles. The most touching part? Lea was wearing a necklace that said "Cory."

Lea had her hair up and sunglasses on as she chatted with the driver, a female pal. Her silver "Cory" name plate chain was around her neck. Her only public statement about Cory was on Twitter, where she said:

Thank you all for helping me through this time with your enormous love & support. Cory will forever be in my heart.

The necklace, worn near her heart, is a tangible reminder of her love. She has been photographed wearing the necklace many times -- including in the photo above, taken before his death -- and it appears to be her favorite piece of jewelry. Still is. Now even more so, I imagine.

Having something to wear that reminds you of a lost loved one is a wonderful way to keep that person close to you. Considering that Cory and Lea were always together and were reportedly going to move in together after he got back from Vancouver, she must have a bunch of his things at her place.

One of the most difficult things anyone who loses a loved one has to do is decide what to keep and what to part with that belonged to the loved one. Depending on how you grieve, you may find his things comforting -- or depressing.

But it looks like Lea is finding comfort in this reminder of Cory.

She also looks strong and together -- though I'm sure it's a different story inside.

Have you ever kept a remembrance of a loved one?

Mike O'MalleySince Cory Monteith's tragic death on July 13th, his Glee co-stars have slowly been opening up and sharing their feelings about his passing. From girlfriend Lea Michele's emotional thanks for the outpouring of support, to Chris Colfer's sweet tribute to his friend, Cory definitely left a lasting impression on his TV family.

And now Mike O'Malley has opened up about Cory's death. Mike plays Burt Hummel on Glee, who is Finn's (Cory's) stepdad and Kurt's (Chris Colfer's) father.

His comments about how he will remember Cory are nothing short of touching, and it's obvious he thought very highly of him.

He said:

He was an incredibly warm guy, a guy who was welcoming to everyone who came on that show … he was a very hard-working actor. I loved working with him, he was a great guy. I miss him very much.

In addition, he referred to Cory as "the fictional quarterback on the show and a very real quarterback for the cast behind the scenes."

Ugh. His words make Cory's loss sink in even further and become even more heartbreaking.

A Glee episode honoring Monteith is set to take place, and Mike hopes to be a part of it. He said:

Burt is a very important role to me, it’s been a great part and I’ve said to all those guys, 'I’ll work early in the morning, late at night, Saturday, Sunday, whatever I need to do to participate and continue to be on that show honoring Cory and his passing and that character.'

And none of us will be the least bit surprised if the rest of the cast feels exactly the same way. Cory's passing has been tough for everyone who loved him -- even fans at home who never actually knew him in real life -- so we can only imagine how much heartache the Glee cast is going through at this time.

At least they have each other to lean on during this horrible time and can honor Cory's memory by recalling all of the happy moments they shared with him.

What do you think of Mike's words about Cory?

Lea Michele Gushes About Cory Monteith in Tearjerking Pre-Death Interview

Lea MicheleAs if my heart isn't heavy enough already from the details surrounding the July 13 death of Glee star Cory Monteith, there's a new interview out that's literally making it hurt. Back in June Lea Michele and Monteith took a vacation to Mexico where she shot photos for the August issue of Marie Claire Mexico. Inside the magazine, Lea touches on her relationship with Cory, saying that he made her life "incredible."

It's eery. In fact, there's no more appropriate word for the interview than heartbreaking. Marie Claire Mexico's editor-in-chief Ariadne Grant recalled Monteith showing up for the photo shoot in "great spirits," and told E! that the couple was obviously "happy and in love."

Go on. Read the highlights from Lea's last interview about her and Cory before he died, here:

It's more interesting having a relationship with someone you work with because we get more attention because we play boyfriend and girlfriend on the show and we are also in real life. But he is the best person I know, he has made my life so incredible and I am so thankful for him and not only to have him as a partner but also as a coworker.

Lea continues on to talk about the importance of being in a relationship with someone who makes you feel "unstoppable" and "encourages you." For Lea, that person was most obviously Cory.

It's been rumored that Lea and Cory were nearly engaged at the time of his death. The kind of love that they had, from the sounds of it, is the kind so many women hope for. The kind of love they had took years and years to develop based off of such a strong friendship. Sure, the couple played on-screen lovers for some time, but it wasn't until February 2012 (three years after Glee's premier) that they came out as a real-life couple. Maybe that's what made them so supportive of one-another, that time period where they were the closest of friends ... first.

My heart continually aches for Lea. My thoughts and prayers are with her and Cory's family and friends during this tough time.

How do you feel about Lea's interview with Marie Claire Mexico?

Lea Michele Accused of 'Controlling' Cory Monteith When She Was Actually a Godsend

lea michele cory monteith So much is coming out about Cory Monteith's life and death at such a rapid pace right now that it's hard to know what's true and what's being exaggerated, but one thing is clear: Now-grieving girlfriend Lea Michele was a hugely protective, positive force in his life ... Which makes it even more annoying that she's being painted as something of a control freak.

TMZ reports that sources close to the couple say Lea "swooped in when Cory died and immediately took over planning his memorial and other matters connected with his death." And before the tragic turn of events, she "fiercely protected him ... as much as she could, especially when it came to his substance abuse." For instance, she reportedly took the reins on his intervention, getting him into rehab, and giving him an ultimatum to clean up or she'd walk.

To some that may seem "controlling," but I'd describe it as being the best damn girlfriend Cory could've possibly had!

To me, what Lea did for Cory -- and what she's continuing to do -- is what you do when you care deeply for someone. You protect them and support them, but also sometimes push them to take better care of themselves.

More from The Stir: Cory Monteith & Lea Michele's Engagement Wasn't Far Off When Tragedy Struck

I've told my husband on multiple occasions -- whether it was when he was riding a motorcycle or acting resistant to addressing a health issue -- that he's gotta take care of himself. For both of our sakes. Because I love him, I want what's best and safest for him. I'm his biggest advocate. Of course, I can only say and do so much, even as his wife. Ultimately, it's up to him to make the right decisions and look out for himself. Still, I'm certain the influence of a protective partner, who always has your back, is overwhelmingly positive.

Hence why it's so wrong to use the words "controlling" and protective interchangeably -- especially in Lea's case. Sounds to me like she did everything she could to help Cory steer in the right direction. Now she's the one who needs all the support she can get and reassurance that she loved and cared for him as best she could, in the best possible way.

What do you think is the difference between being "controlling" and protective of your partner?
