Brown eye makeupSure sure, they say the eyes are the portal to the soul and all that jazz, but most of us aren't exactly Picasso when it comes to playing up one of a lady's best assets. The truth? Bringing out your eye color is actually easier than you might think. A few Stir staffers recently caught up with Sephora PRO Lead Artist Gilbert Soliz to learn how to accentuate their eye color. And let me tell you -- we learned a wholllleeeee lot. Seriously, who knew that you were supposed to curl your lashes BEFORE you put on mascara, eh?

First up: brown eyes. Are you a fellow brown-eyed beauty looking for a few tips on how to make those eyes pop? Look no further. Check out these 5 brown eye makeup tips, here:

Brown_Eyes_Makeup_Tricks1. Start with a blank canvas: This holds true for women of any eye color. It's super important to keep things neutral to start off with by applying a base. Wipe the same color foundation you use on the rest of your face across your eyelid as well as below your eye, and top it off with a light colored eye shadow for the perfect base.

2. Pick a palette that does the work for you: There are loads of palettes out there that have the right colors for your eyes together so you don't have to do the tough work. Our top picks for brown eyes? Marc Jacobs Beauty Style Eye-Con No. 7 in The Tease ($59, sephora.com) or Sephora Collection Primal Instincts Palette ($28, sephora.com).

3. The right blend makes all the difference: You want to make sure that you're layering your eye shadow the right way. Start by using the darkest shade at the base of the lashes, then buff and blend upwards. Apply a medium toned shade to the lid and ensure that the darker shade is well blended. Take the lightest shade and soften the edges at the crease, then blend up toward the brow bone.

4. Going dramatic? Choose purple. The key to getting brown eyes to pop for a night on the town is opting for cooler shades like a flirty, feminine lavender.

5. Top it off with a great lash: If you're looking for long, beautiful lashes there are two main secrets. 1. Like I mentioned before, curl your lashes BEFORE you apply mascara. This way, you'll avoid that little crease that so many of us pretend not to notice. 2. Start applying your mascara at the root, not the tips. This will make your lashes look thicker.

Want to take your lashes a step further? Accent brown eyes with a little bit of plum-colored mascara. We adore Benefit's BADgal Plum Mascara ($19, sephora.com). While you'll hardly see a difference in color, but it will add an extra pop that'll make your girlfriends say "Wow!"

Have any tips or tricks of your own for fellow brown-eyed girls?

Chelsea HouskaThe perfect look with makeup means different things for different people. For some, it's a natural look with earth tones and a solid coat of mascara. For others, it's a dark smokey eye that just screams drama. The stars of MTV's Teen Mom, they're all about the bold look. I'm constantly amazed at the bazillion different looks Chelsea Houska pulls off on a weekly basis (and seemingly effortlessly, I might add).

Check out 5 of our favorite Teen Mom dramatic makeup looks, here:

I'm a huge fan of the brown and neutral colors Farrah is using here for her smokey eye. She did the right thing by keeping her lips simple, too, letting the focus remain on her bold eye makeup.

demi lovatoSure, Lady Gaga has been exposing what her face looks like "nude" more often these days, and Britney Spears's laidback-in-sweatpants look isn't anything new ... But it really isn't every day that we see what pop stars look like when they first roll out of bed in the morning. Maybe that's one reason Demi Lovato recently took to Instagram to share what she looks like sans makeup and in a plain ol' v-neck tee, shorts, and glasses.

"Was sooooooo sleepy yesterday #TCAs," the X Factor judge wrote. In other words, she was up late the night before thanks to the Teen Choice Awards, where she performed her new single "Made in the U.S.A." with Nick Jonas. Thus, it's no wonder she woke up exhausted and looking like a ... oh, I don't know, totally normal, not at all glam 20-year-old! How shockingly refreshing!

This isn't the first time Demi's "bared all" via social media to make a point. In April, she tweeted, "Ladies, be brave today. Take off your make-up and stop using those filters! WE are beautiful!!!" Aww! LOVE IT.

And love how outspoken she is about embracing natural, realistic beauty. How she's rallying followers to do the same. Which I'd venture to guess is even easier for them to do when they see that Demi's the kind of star who practices what she preaches ... and has no problem going totally shockingly makeup-free in front of a camera from time to time.

What do you think about Demi's selfie?

yolanda fosterYolanda Foster's home-grown lemons aren't the only thing she ought to brag about. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star recently posted a bikini photo to a private photo journal Twitter, and Christ on a cracker, she looks good. It's hard to believe Foster is 49. The woman doesn't look a day over 33. What's your secret, Yo-Yo?

Well, actually, maybe a more appropriate question for Foster would be: "Do you mind lending me a million dollars so I can look like you?" We all know Foster takes her health and her appearance very seriously. Throughout the entire past season of RHOBH, she was cleansing, running, squatting, drinking weird drinks, etc. Yolanda is without question a gorgeous woman, but no doubt it takes a lot of money to look that good. And hey, you'd probably look that stunning, too, if you were on a gorgeous beach in Puerto Rico without a care in the world.

Yolanda, whatever you're doing, keep doing it. You look stunning. And, seriously, can I borrow a million dollars? Okay, fine, $500 grand. I'm good for it, I swear. No? Okay, that's cool.

How fantastic does Yolanda Foster look?

eye makeupWith approximately one zillion beauty products available (and that's just eye shadow), sorting out what really works from what just looks good in the package can be a real hit or miss experience. Spending an afternoon playing in Sephora or at the makeup counter in the mall is always fun, but who has time to do that on a regular basis? Here are 9 of my all-time favorite eye makeup beauty picks that are not only beautiful and high quality, but totally affordable.

I'm starting with mascara because that's far and away my favorite beauty product!

MASCARA

I've shared this before, but I have to share it again: my all-time #1 mascara is CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Mascara, in Very Black. It makes my lashes look great, it doesn't smudge, and it's easy to get off. My only complaint with this product is that it seems to get a little dried out before the tube is empty; it definitely has a shelf life. HOWEVER, I know you're supposed to change out mascara frequently anyway, and it's so affordable (generally under 7 bucks) that I don't mind needing to restock. ($6.23 at Drugstore.com)

Agent Flirt mascaraAnother great mascara that I just discovered is FLIRT! Agent Lash Mascara. I had no idea that Kohl's carried this makeup line, but lo and behold, you learn something new every day. I added this to my shopping bag after being reeled in by the cool packaging, and I quite like it! It's very glam and volumizing. (Regular price: $16; on sale now for $8 at Kohls.com)

Benefit BADGal waterproof mascara is a little pricey, but at $19, it squeaks in under the $20 mark and it's quality stuff. I generally dislike waterproof mascara because it can be sticky and make my lashes look stringy, but this product is quite good. ($19 at Benefit.com)

EYELINER

Sephora smoky creamThe great thing about Sephora waterproof smoky cream liner is how versatile it is. You need an eyeliner brush to do a thick line, but you can also create a pretty smoky effect with a q-tip! It comes in a whole array of really beautiful colors; pictured here is "Made in Manhattan" (a "smoky sapphire with blue shimmer"). There's a gorgeous bronze shade and an electric turquoise color that would both be beautiful for summer. ($12 at Sephora.com)

Rimmel makes a whole line of very nice, very affordable beauty products. I'm a big fan of their Exaggerate Full Colour Eye Definer eyeliner; it goes on very smoothly and you don't need a pencil sharpener, which is AWESOME. I hate having to sharpen eyeliners! ($4.99 at Ulta.com)

EYE SHADOW

Body Shop bakedThe Body Shop's Baked Eye Color palettes come in several pretty shades, and you can use them dry or wet for some great effects. The "baking" process (whatever the heck that is) seems to ensure a really rich pigment that lasts a long time. Right now they're having a "buy one, get one 50 percent off" deal. ($12 each at TheBodyShop-USA.com)

Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Metal Eyeshadow offers excellent, long-lasting coverage. I love the way a cream eye shadow looks, even without any other eye makeup, and this cream gel formula goes on beautifully and stays put. ($6.99 at Ulta.com)

EXTRAS

A primer might seem like a wasted extra step AND expense, but it's really not. A good primer not only creates a nice base for your eye makeup to go on, but it helps it last a lot longer. This Ready Set Prime set from Too Faced is a great deal. You get two primers: Original Shadow Insurance, a colorless formula, and Shadow Insurance Candlelight, a shimmery gold formula that adds luminosity to your look. Both will help your eye makeup stay put! ($12 at Sephora.com)

Sonia Kashuk

Sonia Kashuk is my go-to recommendation when it comes to makeup brushes, and her Essential Eye Kit is no exception. Perfect for use with creamy and powder shadows and liners. ($11.40 at Target)
