Fall is here and we are expecting cooler temps, walking on crunchy fallen leaves, and Halle Berry's baby boy any day now. That baby bump is absolutely amazing and beautiful. I love that Halle went bold with a blue and white striped maxi dress that hugs her belly and flaunts a deep-V neckline and long shoulder holes, which exposes a very sexy black lace bra.

Not only is Halle wearing pregnancy well, she's showing off how motherhood and having baby number 2 at 46 years of age is fantastically possible.

Sure, she's Halle Berry -- only one of the world's most beautiful women blessed with beautiful bone structure and a Bond girl body. But she still puts one foot in front of the other just like the rest of us. She enjoys smoothies from Jamba Juice just like the rest of us. She takes her daughter Nahla to American Girl just like the rest of us do for our own daughters. Even if it isn't American Girl but rather some less expensive American Girl knock-off ... like I do with my daughter because ... I'm not Halle Berry.

Halle Berry puts on a black lace bra just like so many of us do ... and she's going to show that bra off damnit, because it's sexy and confident and hey, this dress hangs too low and who can be bothered putting a bulky tank top under it. Show off the lace bra! Why not?

Our bodies come in all shapes and sizes, and we should show love to each and every one. We fluctuate in size before, during, and after pregnancy, and if we want to show off our curves (or our bras) in every stage of their curvy-ness, then we should. We can be sexy and a size 2, sexy and a size 12, sexy and in our third trimester of pregnancy, and sexy in our fourth trimester post-baby body.

Flaunt it, Halle! Pregnant mamas, flaunt it, too!

First a confession: everything I know about sororities I learned from movies like Legally Blonde and friends' glowing accounts of them. I went to a liberal university in the Northeast where sororities and fraternities weren't a big thing, so I was shocked to learn that in 2013, any school was still able to get away with keeping African Americans segregated from its sorority system. 

According to several accounts, the University of Alabama is being slammed for doing just that. The school's newspaper, the Crimson White, published a story last week exposing the details of a extremely intelligent and qualified African-American female student who pledged several sororities in the school and was denied entry. But before you criticize the young sorority girls -- who reportedly gave the woman excellent scores during the recruitment process -- for discrimination, they aren't to blame. All of the shame for this goes to the alumnae, who tried to block the girl's entry.  

The sorority members claim the woman, along with others, were not accepted solely because of their race. They even reported that alumnae threatened to pull funding from the sororities if they accepted African American members. Since financial support from alumnae is the bread and butter of sororities and fraternities, I applaud these young women for coming forward and exposing the segregated system in which they (hopefully unconsciously) took part. 

So after what must have been an emergency meeting this weekend between the university president and sorority-chapter advisors, it was decided the school would join the 21st century and begin allowing African Americans into its Greek organizations.

I can't help wondering what I would do if I were the highly qualified woman who had pledged and been denied entry into these sororities based on the color of my skin. My first impulse is to say I would tell them to shove off. But wouldn't it deliver an even more powerful punch -- one directed straight at the alumnae -- if she held her head high and accepted entrance into one of the groups?

From what I hear -- and please correct me if I'm wrong -- being a part of a sorority is more than just living in big house, throwing keg parties, and getting invites to the best parties. You are forever associated with a group of women with whom you can network when looking for professional opportunities. You take part in community events and are able to assume roles of leadership within your sorority that can prove priceless on a young person's resume.

You can make a round cake, a rectangular one, even a Bundt, and you can use homemade or store-bought chocolate frosting. Garnish however you want -- it's like 10 chocolate cakes in one.

Black Magic Cake by Allrecipes.com

Ingredients:

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup strong brewed coffee
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or one 9x13 inch pan.In large bowl combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Make a well in the center.Add eggs, coffee, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Beat for 2 minutes on medium speed. Batter will be thin. Pour into prepared pans.Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 to 40 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean. 'Orange Is the New Black' Is Losing Alex? Say It Ain't So!

You've been watching Orange Is the New Black, right? As in the original Netflix comedy-drama series loosely based on a memoir by Piper Kerman, which tells the story of a Piper Chapman, a self-described WASP who's sent to federal prison after being convicted of being a drug mule for her former lesbian lover? As in the critically acclaimed show that's been racking up great reviews for its sharp writing, amazing supporting cast, and gratifyingly multi-faceted approach to unraveling archetypes?

I absolutely loved the first season of Orange Is the New Black and can't wait to see what happens in season 2, which is why I'm kind of blown away to hear that one of the main cast members -- Laura Prepon, who plays Alex Vause, Piper's ex-girlfriend -- is leaving the show. I mean, seriously. WHY WOULD ANYONE LEAVE THIS SHOW?

Let me start by acknowledging that this news hasn't fully crossed from rumor to confirmation territory yet ... but it's being reported all over the place, so I'm thinking we can't file it under complete bullshit. We do know for sure that Prepon has not signed on as a series regular for season two of Orange Is the New Black, and more specifically, Buzzfeed reports that she's only going to appear in a limited role for a handful of episodes before wrapping up her storyline altogether.

Word on the street is that the door will be left open for Prepon to return in the future, but she hasn't signed a contract tying her to the show. According to Buzzfeed, Prepon's agent says he can't discuss the show, and her publicist didn't respond to a request for comment.

When pressed for a response on Prepon's rumored exit, Netflix would only say,

Our season is still developing and nothing is confirmed.

Honestly, I'm sort of at a loss for why Laura Prepon would step away from this project, assuming it's true (and assuming it was her choice, rather than the decision of executive producer Jenji Kohan). It took me a while to warm up to her character, but now I really like her, and I think she's given an excellent performance on the series so far. It really seems like this is the sort of high-profile role she'd be thrilled to have, particularly since prior to OINTB she was best known for playing Donna on That '70s Show.

Alex isn't necessarily mission-critical to the story, and I can easily see them addressing her absence by moving her to a different facility, but her relationship with Piper has been one of the central points of the series. The good news is there are plenty of wonderful existing characters to explore (more Crazy Eyes, please!), and I'm sure new faces will arrive as prior inmates are released. Still, what a bummer to completely set aside the fascinating on-again, off-again dynamic between Piper and Alex -- not to mention losing a character who's been extremely relevant to the story thus far.
