When you hear that phrase, "What is wrong with people nowadays?!" it seems to apply to stories like these. I think it's fair to say that the vast majority of us, if our friend was having a massive asthma attack, would call 911. Or drive her to the hospital. Or something. But one person is in jail and three others are facing charges in Pickens County, Georgia, after their beautiful 20-year-old friend, Taylor Smith, reportedly suffered an asthma attack while hanging out with her pals. After her death, these so-called friends dumped her lifeless body on the side of the road. With friends like those, you really need some laws!

Reportedly, the friends were with Taylor, a former cheerleader, when she began suffering an asthma attack, from which she'd suffered her whole life, and they tried to "revive" her by putting her in a cold shower.

When that didn't work, they drove her body to an empty mobile home and dumped it on the lawn. Said Taylor's heartbroken mother, Tanya, who is a police officer:

She didn't deserve just to be dumped on the side of the road, just because they didn't know what else to do. As a mother, I'm so angry, so angry that they treated her the way that they did ... There was a thousand other scenarios they could have done.

Lest you think these are all young kids who maybe panicked -- two of the suspects were well into middle age. One, Marty Gaddis, is 38. The other, Denise Patterson, is 51. They're being charged with concealing a death, abandonment of a body, tampering with evidence, and drug charges.

Since there's drug charges in there, perhaps the older pals thought calling an ambulance for a dying friend might expose their drug usage. One reason that it's good to have laws that protect people from drug charges if they bring someone who has overdosed to the hospital -- though police say that Taylor died from a seizure or asthma attack, not drugs.

If it can be proved that these people stood by and Taylor die, they should be charged with that too. These were supposed friends. How do you dump your friend's body on the side of the road after doing nothing to help save her life?

Well, apparently some people do do it. And they deserve to be punished. Harshly.

Taylor's mom hopes that young people will take this as a lesson to pick their friends wisely, saying: "If Taylor was with people who truly loved her, she'd be alive today."

Do you think the "friends" deserve jail time?

Can you ever fully protect your kids from crazy? That's the question one mom must be asking herself as she let her 9-year-old girl wander off in a Best Buy store, only to have the girl almost get killed by a psychopath. James Tadros, a complete stranger to the girl, allegedly followed her, forced her into the ladies' room, wrapped a plastic bag over her head, and held her head inside the toilet. Thank goodness a customer heard her scream and alerted employees, who rushed into the bathroom and rescued the girl. But she will no doubt have nightmares for a very long time.

Surveillance video inside the Best Buy in Jacksonville, Florida, reportedly shows 29-year-old Tadros luring the girl away from her mother (unclear how exactly he did this) and then forcing her into the bathroom.

There, he allegedly beat her bloody, threw a plastic bag around her head, and tried to drown her inside the toilet. When an employee heard her screams and rushed into the bathroom, the girl was able to escape the six-foot tall, 250-pound man. Other employees were able to hold the man until police arrived.

If all of this is true and he's found guilty, this is one sick bastard who should not be out on the streets AT ALL. He came to the scene of the crime with a plastic bag -- so he had something planned. He also got a young girl into a public bathroom in a very public place inside of a store with tons of people and cameras -- and then tried to kill her. He obviously does not even have the capacity to understand that what he was did would be quickly found out and he'd be caught. This leads me to believe he has a very strong desire to kill young children.

But since he was charged with attempted murder, this could mean he will get out eventually. Shudder.

It's unclear where the girl's mother was during the attack, but at least one report says she was in the store. Moms do have a tendency sometimes of letting their children wander in stores when they feel safe and complacent -- I see it all of the time. And the vast majority of the time, it's fine. But in this instance it almost resulted in this little girl's horrific death.

Do you feel safe with your kids in stores? Should this man ever be let out of prison if he's found guilty?

Woman Blames Heart Attack on Hair Dye Job Gone Wrong

woman hair rinse salonWe've all had a haircut or dye job go wrong and leave us in tears. Okay, maaaaybe occasionally we've suffered a panic attack or meltdown of some sort, too. Hey, hair can be a very personal, sensitive thing! For one Missouri woman named Catherine Oldham, a dye job gone wrong led to a heart attack and eight days on life support, she says. And now she's suing Geoffred's Hair Salon and stylist DeShone Love.

Oldham told the court she went in for a haircut and a condition, and Love persuaded her to add some color to the gray in her hair. The complaint states that "when the time came to neutralize the hair coloring agent on plaintiff's hair, defendant DeShone Love borrowed an unmarked bottle from a neighboring cosmetologist's lane and applied the solution." Oldham says that the next day her scalp began itching, and two days later, blisters formed. She ended up in the E.R., where she was given pain meds, antibiotics, and steroids.

Eventually, from talking to Love over the phone, Oldham deduced that no rinse and neutralizing agent had been applied to her hair. Instead, she had been treated with two acidic hair colors one after the next and apparently developed a bacterial infection due to the scalp wounds, which led her to having to get her hair cut off. Ugh.

But here's where it gets complicated ... (I know, as if it didn't already sound totally involved!) Oldham apparently woke up with severe pain and nausea only a couple of weeks after the dye job. She fainted and went into cardiac arrest. Then, after being on life support for eight days, she reportedly "went through numerous surgeries and was then implanted with an internal defibrillator to keep her heart rhythm regular." Now, she says she's in constant pain and will be forever limited in daily activities due to the defibrillator she has to have for the rest of her life. She will also need to have surgery every five to six years for defibrillator maintenance.

Hmmm. Something about this just doesn't add up, you know? I believe it's totally possible that she got a bad allergic reaction and possibly even a bacterial infection from the dye job. But to blame the heart attack on it? I dunno ... Seems more like Oldham was so worked up about what happened with the dye job and downstream effects of it that she basically made herself sick and gave herself a heart attack

This seems to me a perfect illustrated example of why we need to be aware of just how much our stress response and emotional health can influence our physical well-being.

With hope, Oldham is able to regain a higher quality of life after this harrowing, traumatic incident. But blaming what happened to her wholly on a chemical reaction seems sadly misguided.

What do you make of this? Do you agree her heart attack was probably more related to her emotional state in the wake of the dye job?

wildernessImagine you are on a road trip with a group of people when the car breaks down on a rural road in Alberta, Canada. While some go in search of help, you are left alone with one of the men, who suddenly attacks you, breaks your jaw, and attempts to rape you. Chilling, isn't it? This sounds like a creepy horror movie come to life. Fortunately, the victim got away from her attacker and fled into the brush, where she managed to survive in the wilderness for 12 days until she was found. It's amazing to hear how she came through this alive.

After running into the woods, she got lost and disoriented and was unable to find her way out. So she roamed for nearly two weeks, drinking river water and foraging for berries. She was eventually spotted walking down a dirt road and was treated at the hospital for exposure and the broken jaw.

This woman's survival skills are astounding, aren't they. I can only imagine how cold, hungry, and scared she must have been. Not many people would have known what was even safe to eat out there in the middle of nowhere. Plus, without shelter, she had to contend with temperatures dropping overnight and wild animals. Though the most harrowing part of this ordeal must have been not knowing if that sexual predator was still after her, possibly lurking in between the trees or somewhere in the darkness.

The alleged attacker had told investigators that he had no idea what had happened to her. However, now he is being charged with sexual assault, aggravated assault, and obstructing a peace officer -- thank goodness.

Do you think you could survive in the wilderness that long?
