louise hiltonIt could have easily turned into every parent's worst nightmare: 2-year-old Louise Hilton walked right out the door of her daycare in England ... and kept on going! For half a mile! That's right, little Louise apparently decided she'd had enough of nursery school for the day and hightailed it home ... all by herself! According to her parents, at about 1 p.m., they heard a knock at the door ... guess who??

I bet right about now you're thinking, How on earth did that tiny little girl make it home alone? Of course Louise must be incredibly smart -- with a remarkable sense of direction -- but she's also incredibly, incredibly lucky. Just imagine what could have happened on that 30-minute walk!! Seriously, you do it -- I can't, because every time I try to imagine it, I start to feel ill. OH MY GOD, things could have gone so horribly wrong ...

According to her dad, John Hilton:

"It is frightening to think what might of happened had the wrong person seen her ... there is a canal 50 yards from the house and she always tries to jump in and feed the ducks when we go past but she cannot swim."

Cripes! It's enough to make me hyperventilate, and she's not even my kid! I bet right about now you're also thinking something like, How on earth did that tiny little girl escape from her daycare undetected? Supposedly, the facility is under construction and a workman left the door open by accident, which is a plausible excuse sort of kind of I guess not really. I mean to say, I can see how something like that could happen and be a legit accident. But in that case, I would expect one whopper of an apology if I were Louise's mom -- and as of this writing, her parents have NOT gotten any sort of "sorry" at all! Just a big fat "no comment."

I'm guessing Louise's parents are on the hunt for a new daycare, ASAP. Just look at this face:

And those curls! So cute, so smart ... so lucky.

Can you imagine your 2-year-old escaping daycare and walking all the way home?

Grandfather Whose Pit Bulls Killed 2-Year-Old Grandson May Only Get 10-Year Sentence

arrestedThe fate of a step-grandfather accused of leaving his two young grandsons at home unsupervised with his dangerous pit bulls is in the hands of the courts now. Steven Hayashi's 2-year-old grandson, Jacob Bisbee, died when he was attacked by the dogs while the step-grandfather was out playing tennis.

According to prosecutors, Hayashi is to blame for not only knowing his dogs were dangerous, but leaving the door to the garage where the dogs were located unlocked and un-child-proofed when he left Jacob and his 4-year-old brother home alone with their sleeping grandmother. And for all of this, for alleged involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment, Hayashi is facing just 10 years in prison.

Ten years?

For knowingly leaving a child in serious danger that resulted in his death?

Is that really enough?

Let me back up a second and address the elephant in the room: not all pit bulls are dangerous. It would be irresponsible of me not to mention that in this anti-pit bull climate. Frankly, that's a kettle of fish that's much too deep for me to get into in just one blog post, but it must be put out there (and if you want more info, check out this great post from the ASPCA on pet behavior and pits).

Now.

Moving on.

Although not every pit bull is dangerous, in this step-grandfather's case, police say his weren't just vicious, but he knew it! The dogs had already killed two family pets and showed aggression toward little Jacob. Prosecutors allege Hayashi had ignored family members' requests that he get rid of the dogs, stating:

But as he told his wife, the dogs were his, and the children were his step-grandchildren, and they should leave before the dogs.

Unfortunately, little Jacob did leave. He died while his grandma was sleeping, while his grandpa was out playing tennis.

The case is still in court, so Hayashi is innocent until proven guilty, but it certainly sounds like he cared nothing for this little boy's safety. Is it really so hard to put off your tennis game until a responsible adult is awake and ready to watch the kids for you? Is it really so hard to LOCK a door?

And if this case proceeds as it stands; if his grandfather is convicted; the message the court sends is that his life is only worth 10 years in prison.

What do you think of the charges and potential punishment here? Is it enough?

Baby Monitor Hacked So Sicko Could Spy on 2-Year-Old Girl (VIDEO)

2-Year-Old Boy Wearing Pink Flower Headband Is Attacked By Grown Man

pink flowerI almost didn't read this story: "What Happened When My Son Wore a Pink Headband to Walmart." I kind of figured I already knew what happened. People were jerks about it and maybe made a few snarky comments to her, she went home and wrote a blog post about it. And now we feel defensive on her behalf. The end. We've all heard stories like this before -- the boy in the princess costume, Jenna Lyons painting her son's toenails. I read the story anyway ... and my jaw dropped. It's so much worse than I thought it would be.

Katie Vyktoriah wrestled her 2-year-old son Dexter and her 5-month-old baby into the car to pick up a few necessities at the store. Moms have to pick their battles, so she made Dexter leave behind the huge stuffed bear he wanted to bring, but she let him keep the pink lace flower headband he was wearing. Maybe she expected a few looks, I don't know. But she certainly didn't expect her son to be grabbed and threatened by a full-grown adult.

A large man saw Dexter, stormed over, tore off the headband, cuffed the toddler on the side of his head, and said, "You'll thank me later, little man!" Kind of a terrifying and infuriating thing for a stranger to do to your kid, right? Kate went into mama bear mode and said, "If you touch my son again, I will cut your damn hands off." And that's when the guy upped the ante and snarled, "Your son is a f*cking fa***t ... He'll get shot for it one day."

Yeah, he said that to a mother and her 2-year-old son.

So that's undeniably horrible. However you feel about little boys in pink headbands, you just do not touch other people's children, you don't pull articles of clothing off their bodies, and you certainly don't call them a slur and tell them they'll get shot someday -- which sounds awfully close to a threat, actually. All of this is unacceptable, uncivilized behavior. (Katie said on Facebook that she did eventually report the incident to the police and can't comment further on it at this time.)

But can we talk about all the bystanders who did nothing in response? "There were several people who had witnessed the encounter, but not one of them came over to offer support or console me or my son." I bet some of them were parents, too. I don't blame them for not wanting to confront the bully. But not a single person could ask Katie if she was alright, or offer some sympathy, or anything? That's almost as bad, I think.

It's easy enough to not be the asshole. But being a civilized and compassionate human being requires a little more from us. However you feel about pink headbands on little boys, can we see what's most important here? More important than a 2-year-old learning that some adults will go apeshit if you don't conform to gender stereotypes? What's most important is that we affirm for each other, every single day, that we value kindness. And we do that through our words and actions. Don't be that big jerk at Walmart, but don't be those little jerks who stood by and said nothing, either.

What would you have done if you'd seen this happen?

George H.W.

2-Year-Old Cancer Patient Tapes 'Send Pizza' Sign on Hospital Window and Gets Overwhelming Response

send pizzaTwo-year-old Hazel Hammersley has cancer, a neuroblastoma tumor in her abdomen. On the Fourth of July, she was admitted to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles for a fever. While there, Hazel's grandmother and mother came up with a brilliant idea for raising everyone's spirits: Tape the message "Send Pizza" on the hospital window. It was just a silly whim. But days later they started getting a lot of deliveries.

It all started when Hazel's grandmother told the story of the time she was in a hospital as a girl, and put a sign reading "send pizza" in her hospital window. That sounded like a fun idea, so Hazel's mother, Lauren, put up a sign of their own. A few days went by with nothing. But then someone posted a photo of the sign on Reddit -- and guess what happened next.

A lot of pizza happened, that's what. Over 20 pies arrived before the hospital finally had to request that no more pizzas be delivered. Meanwhile, Hazel and her family and friends enjoyed one of the happiest pizza parties ever.

I love how the online community rallied around this little girl. Isn't it amazing when strangers show that they care like this? How amazing -- not just for Hazel, but for her family and for all the other kids being treated at the hospital. Lauren is hoping the Hazel's pizza sign will raise awareness for childhood cancer. "We can use this opportunity to let people know that not enough research goes into how to treat our kids." I hope, also, this pizza party sends so much positive energy to Hazel and her family that she has a full recovery from her cancer.

Have you ever done anything to cheer up a child in a hospital?
