8 Cosas me sentí culpable cuando dejé a mi hijo en la escuela esta mañana

El año académico es apenas está en marcha, pero de la carga de culpa los padres que estoy cargando, que pensarías que era mediados de marzo. Generalmente no llegar a este nivel de autodesprecio materna relacionadas con la escuela hasta por lo menos un par de insuficiente, apresuradamente puso juntos en proyectos de ciencia o resúmenes de libros han sido entregados tarde... y sin embargo, aquí, aún no terminamos con septiembre y yo ya estoy Guisando en remordimiento. Dang, no hemos siquiera golpeamos "Me olvidé de firmar el permiso" temporada todavía!

Esta noche, es todo lo que puedo hacer para recordar, con una vergonzosa, los muchos errores que hice cuando envié a mi hijo de casi 8 años a la escuela esta mañana...

1. Sus uñas estaban tan sucias su maestro probablemente piensa hacerle la luna como un miner2 de carbón. Las mangas de la chaqueta eran corta de un centímetro de sus muñecas (podría haber jurado que cosa entra la semana pasada).3. Su desayuno consistía en un mordisco de un plátano y un trago de limonada (rosa) 4. Ni uno de nosotros puede recordar cuántas páginas de "Ramona the Brave" leyó anoche así que escribió un número inventado en su registro de lectura y había firmado it6. Al lado de su carpeta no ha sido vaciado desde el primer día de school7 "dejar en casa". Su almuerzo incluido las patatas fritas para el día 5 en una row8. Tengo un buen descanso durante el verano, pero aquí estoy otra vez: torpemente encaramado en un Coleman silla plegable al margen de un campo de patio de colegio. A mis pies es una botella de agua que corre a mi hijo y a tragos valientemente mientras que mirar alrededor para ver a sus amigos, me proporciona un asentimiento silencioso conciso como yo le pimienta con preguntas de mamá alegres sobre si está divirtiendo. Cae bruscamente la botella en mi pie en su apuro por volver al juego, y suspiro y soportarlo vuelta vertical para que no gotea en mis zapatos.

Dios mío, estoy aburrido. POM VOLVIENDO. ABURRIDO. Y hay, vamos a ver el tiempo... ¡ dulce basura misericordioso, sólo llevamos aquí durante diez minutos. Alguien, por favor, dime que ser un ama de casa se pone mejor? ¿POR FAVOR?

En realidad, no es fútbol ni siquiera esta vez, es la bandera del balompié. ¿Lo que es, lo admito, muy adorable a ver de alguna manera, gracias al grupo variopinto de segundo grado, las jóvenes que están constantemente desnudando sus protectores bucales el uno al otro como tiburones con dientes de goma y manera levantando a sus culos pequeños en el aire para lanzar (snap? Lo que se mueven entre las piernas se llama) el balón hacia adelante y hacia atrás. Además, cuando el entrenador obliga a los niños hacer un ejercicio que consiste en correr hacia atrás, alguien siempre los viajes y de alguna manera cae en una voltereta inversa completa, y es un sólido entretenimiento.

Pero Dios, la sesión.La sesión interminable, interminable. Soy demasiado viejo para sprawl hacia fuera en una silla de lona emergente campo por más de sesenta segundos continuos sin algo empieza a doler. Te juro que el instante en que lleguemos ahí entro en una especie de grieta en el espacio-tiempo y la práctica de una hora de duración continúa durante varios días en el extremo. Sólo cuando estoy convencido de que hemos estado allí tanto tiempo un glaciar va a adelantar el campo y ahogar a todos nosotros, inevitablemente me doy cuenta de que tenemos al menos cuarenta y cinco minutos (mil millones).

(Sí, podría dejar a mi hijo y felizmente la velocidad distancia a pastos más verdes como hacen algunos padres, pero no me siento bastante cómodo hacerlo todavía. Quiero decir, estoy seguro de que estaría bien, pero a su edad quiero estar cerca por si acaso.)

(Además, el continuo espacio-tiempo funciona perfectamente contra mí cuando tengo tiempo libre. Si me fui, yo tendría.0000004 segundos antes de que tendría que ser volver a recogerlo. ¿Sabes lo que estoy hablando aquí, ¿no?)

Peor que la sesión, sin embargo, es la responsabilidad de intentar hacer una pequeña charla con las otras mamás espera oxígeno-que aspira, que parece que se conocen desde hace al menos una década. Tal vez como más de cuatro décadas: eran claramente todos nacidos el mismo día, alcanzando con dedos recién alegres hacia el otro de sus cunas hospital, seguros en el conocimiento que ellos serían mejores amigas para siempre.

Mira, no estoy diciendo que es el escenario más probable, sólo digo parece que cualquiera que sea el deporte, siempre hay un grupo muy unida de los amigos de mamá: y entonces yo, sintiendo como Quasimodo tambaleándose hacia sus mantas de picnic compartidos y las discusiones de los planes de la hora feliz. Intento forzarme a eludir mi ansiedad social suficiente para emitir un saludo de algún tipo, pero si hay una manera de usted Inserte suavemente en un grupo sin sonar como un extraño híbrido de robot-hombre de las cavernas, no he aprendido esta habilidad. Es exactamente tan estresante como acercarse a la mesa de la cafetería de los chicos populares en la escuela secundaria. — Hola — resonar en voz alta. "POR LO MENOS EL TIEMPO AGRADABLE HOY, JE JE JE." Entonces me retiro con la grabación de las mejillas que luchan con armar mi mierda silla de campo y esperamos que la tierra se abre y me trague entero como las mamás BFF retorno a su charla.

Una vez comienzan los juegos, me parece que el esfuerzo todo mejora en gran medida, porque al menos hay alguna acción decente y la mayoría del tiempo mi esposo está allí conmigo. Pero también está el servicio de SNACK. ¿Recuerdas cuando éramos niños, cuando si hubiera cualquier tipo de grupo merienda después de un partido que era rodajas de naranja? ¿Y NOS ENCANTÓ LAS RODAJAS DE NARANJA? Pues Dios no lo quiera alcanzas a rodajas de naranja, rodajas de naranja no tienen etiquetas de ingrediente y quién sabe, tal vez hay una variante de los cítricos que incluye ahora maldito GLUTEN. También alguna merienda todo lo ha evolucionado en proveer a cada niño con toda la comida preparada incluyendo su propia botella de Gatorade personal. ¿Por qué hacer estos días necesitan una barra de granola, una bolsa de fruta masticable con sabor a bocados, una bolsa de Goldfish, galletas y bebidas--a las 2 PM? No sé, sólo sé que todo el mundo hace esto y no voy a añadir a mi torpeza por ser la primera madre de romper la tendencia.

De todos modos, la buena noticia es que pronto vendrán las lluvias torrenciales, frías, yo puedo distraerme temblando e intentando evitar la gripe. Sólo cinco semanas más de fútbol que ir! Entonces hay los 5 años de fútbol infantil, el 8-años de primavera fútbol, béisbol, y... OH DIOS.

I don't know about you, but I kind of thought the "make your kid hold up a humiliating sign detailing his or her wrongdoings in a high-traffic area" disciplinary trend was over. (At least I hoped so.) Alas, I was wrong. Not only is the trend still going strong-ish, it's evolving to include new misdemeanors, moving on from the realm of petty thievery and cursing to ... twerking. Yes, twerking. Don't believe me? Just ask 11-year-old Jamie Hena, a seventh grader in California who dared to twerk at her school dance, much to mother Frances Hena's dismay. 

Now, before we go any further, I should point out that twerking is apparently NOT against school rules -- Jamie was in the clear until a friend told her mom about the "inappropriate" moves she busted. 

So, beyond the question of why any parent thinks making their kid hold up a piece of cardboard with a half-hearted apology scrawled in magic marker is actually an effective form of discipline, what I want to know is if poor Jamie even knew she was really doing anything wrong. Also, WAS she really doing anything wrong? Um ... nope. Sure, she was dancing "inappropriately" for an 11-year-old girl, but one could argue that The Twerk (as I've decided it should be referred to always from this point on) is an "inappropriate" dance for anyone at any age to perform.

That said, it's no less/more raunchy than any other inappropriate dance craze from years past: When I was 11 years old, Dirty Dancing -- the movie -- was all the rage, and while there was precious little dirty dancing going on at any school functions (boys and girls still stayed far away from each other on separate sides of the gym), it was still something we all knew about and were like, whatever. Meaning Patrick Swayze didn't corrupt us, you know? (Neither did the lesser known Lambada craze from around the same time.) Just like Elvis and his hips didn't corrupt our then-young parents, Miley Cyrus and her twerking didn't corrupt Jamie Hena or anybody else. Because while twerking is tacky and suggestive, it's still just a dance, and to punish your 11-year-old for dancing "disrespectfully" is to load up that innocent butt-waggling with a butt-load of innuendo she probably never even realized was there in the first place -- 'til ya made her stand there with a sign and think about it, that is. So who's corrupting whom??

Totally with the mom on this one. 11-year-olds do not need to be incorporating moves that populate strip clubs at school dances. Show some respect for yourself.

I'm on the fence with this one...I think it is great parenting to try to correct inappropriate behaviors...however, for this one, I would have done something a little different...such as, chaperoning at one of her dances/parties and commence to twerking my behind off--it would be my way of showing how embarassing and oh so very inappropriate it is for all involve--the twerkee and twerker.  But if her way is going to make difference--then go for it.

***BTW, I should have been holding quite a few signs back in my day as a tween/teenager in the 80's...SMDH at the memories of MY wild dancing---but, in my defense, compared to the dancing in this day and age--we were ANGELS***
