Daryl Hannah Reveals Autism Diagnosis That She's Tried to Hide Her Whole Life

Here's some surprising news coming out of Hollywood today: Daryl Hannah revealed she was diagnosed with autism as a child. She also had struggles with "debilitating shyness" as a result of the disorder. Kind of unexpected, right?

Known for her iconic roles in Kill Bill: Volume 1 & 2, Splash, Blade Runner, and Wall Street, she said that she's been able to stay under the radar when it comes to her diagnosis and quietly manage her symptoms. Considering no one has any kind of privacy in Hollywood anymore, the fact she has kept this a secret so long is quite a feat.

Also once making headlines for dating John Kennedy Jr., she admitted to People magazine, "I’ve never been comfortable being the center of attention." You can see the interview in Friday's issue, when she also said, "It’s always freaked me out."

At times that she'd become so shy, she'd rock back and forth constantly. As a teenager, when she started to become famous, she had to hide her autism diagnosis in her professional life and couldn't do promotional appearances or talk shows. She said it was "not because I was above it, but because I was terrified."

Wow, what a brave thing to finally admit after all these years! Especially for someone who confesses that she is petrified of the spotlight. She went on to say, "I’m a grown up now. I’ve learned a couple of things that really would’ve made my life easier if I’d known them 20 years ago .... I wasted so much time scared, self-conscious, and insecure."

It's rather inspiring that woman who enjoyed so much success in Hollywood was once diagnosed with autism and couldn't even go around promoting her own work as a result, which is such a major factor when it comes to a movie's success nowadays. The 52-year-old beauty should also serve as an example that people who are diagnosed with autism or fighting chronic shyness can go on to have amazing careers and fulfilling lives. Good for her for coming out with her autism and opening up about how she was able to overcome her symptoms while still being able to let her guard down and perform in front of a camera and crew.

Now she's enjoying life with her boyfriend of three years, a pig they rescued name Molly, and a farm she's living in near LA. She's also an environmental activist who's been arrested a couple times during protests. Regardless, she's a true inspiration for anyone with autism or battling shyness, and we wish her even more continued success in both her private and public lives.

Is it me, or has anyone else been surprised at how much Hannah Anderson has been in the spotlight since her rescue from James DiMaggio? Anderson just gave her first TV interview. Before that, she answered questions on Ask.fm. She's just barely turned 16! And it hasn't even been a full month since her abduction. I think her privacy should be protected more. Where is her dad in all this -- does he really think it's a good idea to let his daughter do an interview on national TV already?

Obviously Hannah handled the interview well. I don't dispute that. She speaks clearly and calmly, and shows remarkable poise. I'm more concerned about how she is internally, how she's processing what's happened to her, and how she's healing from the horrific deaths of her mother and brother.

I know why the morning shows are so eager to interview her -- Hannah has a hot story. And I suspect that Hannah wants to set the record straight on some of the things people are saying about her, about all those texts to DiMaggio, about his family's allegations that he's her father. But there are other ways to do that, like through a spokesperson. Hannah's father may not have the money to hire a fancy PR company to handle their press, but they could probably use someone's help, maybe someone local. (Actually, a PR rep with a soul would be volunteering their services in the interest of protecting Hannah without making her dad go broke.)

Where is Hannah's dad? What is he doing? Was he so excited about his daughter being interviewed on the Today show that he forgot about giving his daughter the privacy she probably needs? I think that in our reality TV-obsessed and social media-driven world, we forget why we need privacy at all.

Privacy isn't just about shutting people out. It's about creating a safe space for people to process their emotions and thoughts without the pressure or influence of friends or (!!!) total strangers. I wouldn't be surprised if a teen like Hannah felt like she doesn't need privacy. But that's where her dad should step in and provide her with something he knows she needs, even if she doesn't recognize it. That's what the relative maturity of adulthood is supposed to give you -- a wiser perspective than that of your teen.

Hannah mentions that she's taken on her mother's strength. But feeling numb and being stoic in the face of tragedy isn't strength. It's just a coping mechanism. Staying home, refusing to see anyone, feeling miserable, mourning, taking as much time as you need to heal -- that's not a sign of weakness. It means you recognize and honor your emotions. At the very least, Hannah's father should be enabling her to do that instead of these interviews. Who cares what the public thinks about Hannah? We can wait to hear her side of the story.

Cause of Death for Hannah Anderson’s Mom Only Makes DiMaggio’s Motives Harder to Understand

A sad bit of closure has been reached in the case of abducted teen Hannah Anderson. The San Diego coronor's office has released the cause of death for Hannah's mother: Christina Anderson died from "blunt force injury of head." Her death has been ruled a homicide, and she was declared dead at 8:25 p.m. though police do not know at what time she actually died. According to a leaked arrest warrant, Anderson was found in family friend James DiMaggio's burned home next to a crowbar.

Since the coroner's report doesn't mention burns or smoke inhalation, we may be able to infer that she died before DiMaggio's home was set on fire ... but that doesn't make her death any less horrific or tragic. She was still murdered in a brutal way. And we still don't know why.

There are the allegations that Christina and her 8-year-old son, Ethan, were tortured before their deaths. There is no new information either confirming or refuting this. And there is still no report on the cause of Ethan's death. According to reports, his body was found badly burned. So a lot of questions are still to be answered -- and yet I'm not sure how much we really want to know.

But most puzzling of all, even if police do prove that DiMaggio killed Christina and Ethan, we may never know what his motivation was. Does Hannah even know? She says she didn't even know her mother and brother had been killed.

With DiMaggio also dead, police are left to piece the case together based on what they can find. With every new detail revealed, it's even more infuriating to know that DiMaggio will never have to answer for his alleged crimes -- if he really was responsible for the deaths of Christina, Ethan, and their dog.

El país todavía está tambaleándose por lo que le pasó a 16-year-old Hannah Anderson, quien fue secuestrado por un amigo de la familia desde hace mucho tiempo James DiMaggioy trajo a las montañas de Idaho, después de que torturó y mató a su madre y su hermano menor. Rescate de Hannah, en la que DiMaggio fue asesinado en un tiroteo con agentes del FBI, Hannah desde en social media describiendo su calvario.
