train stationIt's one of those freak tragedies that sends chills down your spine. A 21-year-old college student on her daily commute is waiting for a train. While standing on the platform, she has a brief exchange with a homeless man, who allegedly then suddenly pushes her in front of an oncoming train. It's a horrifying crime -- and even more so when you learn what motivated this man's vicious attack.

The man, 39-year-old Howard Mickens, was reportedly angered when young Maya Leggat declined to give him any money. Other would-be passengers immediately went to help, following Mickens and subduing him until police arrived. Fortunately the impact did not kill Legget, but it did leave her legs badly mangled and she suffered a head injury. A family member said she will need several surgeries. It's a miracle that she survived.

It's so dismaying that this girl's life was put in danger simply because she said, "No." According to the New York Post, this man had been loitering at the station and harassing people for months. He even had 11 previous arrests. This is just a horrible reminder that danger can lurk in the most unexpected places. We have to be vigilante about our safety and, sadly, always on the defensive when it comes to strangers.

There seem to be a rash of cases in New York City where a person on their way to work or home is pushed on the tracks by a deranged stranger. It's frightening. For now, Mickens has been charged with attempted homicide. If found guilty, they should lock him up for a very long time.

Do you find this story startling? Or have you heard of a similar incident?

Horrifying ‘Lizzy Seeburg’ Sign Publicly Disrespects Rape Victim in Front of the World

FootballOn Saturday, ESPN aired its annual College GameDay and, as part of the infectious hype and hullaballoo, thousands of manic game-goers put their Sharpies to some serious work to show off the wittiness they’ve been cultivating at their respective institutions. There were plenty of Manti Te'o “Catfish” jokes at the Notre Dame-Michigan game, but one sign stood out for its pure inappropriateness. It read “Hi Lizzy Seeberg,” hoisted high above the crowd.

When a rape accuser dies, can she really ever rest in peace? Not if a Michigan fan has access to poster board and a little bit of television airtime.

In 2010, Seeberg—then a 19-year-old freshman at St. Mary's College, a school across the street from Notre Dame—accused one of ND’s players of sexually assaulting her. She did what she was supposed to do, reporting the incident to authorities, but the treatment of her case lacked concern and urgency which, according to a later report, is apparently how Notre Dame routinely treats women who call out incidents of violent sexual crime.

Days later, she got a text from the player’s friend telling her that "messing with Notre Dame football is a bad idea" and threatening her to not “do anything you would regret." Just over a week after she bravely contacted university powers-that-be, she died on an overdose of depression and anxiety meds.

That’s not anything anyone in any frame of their right mind could make a lighthearted zinger out of. Lizzy Seeberg couldn’t see that sign because Lizzy Seeberg is dead. You know, because no one with any power to help her was taking her case seriously and also, the jock culture zombies were harassing her while her life was in full upheaval.

Security is now reevaluating its sign-screening process, but the jokemaker himself allegedly emailed Deadspin to defend his actions. It might take you until happy hour to read his diatribe in its entirety, but he’s claiming he was actually memorializing Seeberg (even though, in this picture, his Cheshire cat grin kind deflects any semblance of good-intentioned empathy):

“Notre Dame isn't just chicken in not playing Michigan. Notre Dame is, among other things, chicken for not having the spine to even say anything to the family of a girl while they have her blood on their hands. Notre Dame, in all facets, is chicken.”

Then he added this: “We don't sit on problems at Michigan. We address them. And if someone wants to come into our house, with the glaring arrogance of Notre Dame, those problems will be addressed. Because once again, this is Michigan.”

And also this: “Everyone is important, Notre Dame. Everyone has value, Notre Dame. You don't treat a victim this way, or her family this way, Notre Dame. And if you don't, you will be called out on it. Because you're at Michigan.”

Smacks of a rally cry and a way to rattle the opponent rather than a heartfelt way to pay homage to the memory of Lizzy Seeberg. Folks' allegiances can get all kinds of misguided and tangled up with the culture of competitive sports and that breeds the ugliest kind of insensitivity. Because God forbid justice interrupt the sanctimonious football program.

Barring those containing profanity, do you think signs should be screened or censored?

baby grandpa false teethHooray, another crying baby video. No really, I love videos of babies crying for crazy reasons. First of all, not my baby, not my responsibility. Second, their little scrunched-up faces are so cute. I just turn down the sound. So in today's video, a baby cries when his grandpa removes his false teeth. Yeah, it's gross. I almost cried, too.

Can you blame this poor kid? Imagine, you're still trying to figure out how the world works and what permanence means (very, very tenuous grasp on that concept at this age). Maybe this baby just barely got his own teeth, who knows. And then this beloved person in his life goes and takes parts of his mouth apart. WTF!?! Those things come out of your mouth? Will my mouth fall apart like that, too? Why didn't someone tell me? Oh my God, I'm going to have to cry now.

But there's a dark side to this story: No more babysitting from Grandpa. I'm sure this baby will never hang with grandpappy ever, ever again. Think he planned it that way all along?

Would seeing someone take out their false teeth scare your baby?

little girlThe first time my daughter dropped something and said "fudge ripple ice cream," I breathed a huge sigh of relief. She wasn't asking for a sweet treat. She was copying me, specifically copying my go-to "curse" word.

Yes, occasionally I curse in front of my kid. But I try not to do it very often, and so I've got some "fake" curses up my sleeve, words I use in place of the really bad four-letter words that I want to say ... but shouldn't.

Fudge ripple ice cream, in case you haven't guessed, is what comes out of my mouth when I want to drop an F-bomb. It gets the job done, but I'll admit it's pretty comical, even a tad bit ridiculous

But if you think that's bad, just wait until you hear some of the crazy things parents say just to avoid using bad words in front of their kids!

Parents 'fessed up to all of the following:

1. Oh Buzzard Soups!

2. Zip it, Happy Meal! (stolen from Despicable Me)

3. Schmaltz (s**t),

4. Fudge graham (f**k)

5. Holy guacamole

6. My brother likes to yell "son of a BEAVER!" when he needs to swear and his kids are around. I like it because it still sounds dirty.

7. I curse in front of [my kids] but on the occasion I remember in front of other people's kids, I use "oh, sugar snaps!"

8. [My daughter] came up with "jingledarnit" as an alternative to swearing when we talked about it.

9. Shut the front door!

10. Flipping (in place of the other F-bomb).

Swear Words for Parents11. Razzle-frazzit! (Came from an old Looney Tunes)

12. I say, "Oh coconuts," though I think I stole that from Jake and the Neverland Pirates.

13. I am always yelling "GARBAGE!" It takes the place of many words I want to use...

14. I used to say, "Oh crap" all the time. Not exactly the worst curse word, but one day as I was about to scream it I noticed my 4-year-old looking right at me, so, "Oh crumbcake" came out and it stuck!

15. Sugar pie (in place of sh*t).

16. Nuckin futs!

17. Flip flop for f**k

18. Oh mustard for oh sh*t

19. Hockey Sticks (for Hell)

20. Ish (for sh*t)

21. Fanabala (f**k)

22. My mom says "oh fart" instead of the f word.

23. Friggers (for f**ers)

24. Fudge ripple ice cream

25. Frick (for f**k)

What are your go-to fake curse words?

Kris Jenner's TMI Sex Confessions in Front of Her Daughters Show She Has No Shame

kris jennerAnd the award for most embarrassing mom in the world goes to ... Kris Jenner.

So what has the supreme momager done this time? Tell the world about her sex life - and in front of daughters Kylie and Kendall no less. But what do you expect? After all, she does need the ratings on her already-tanking talk show.

The uncomfortable TMI moment came while Khloe Kardashian and Kris played a game of I Never on air. Leave it to Kris to provide some long-winded answer that no one wanted to hear about her joining the mile high club with husband Bruce Jenner. Gross! Another one that almost made our ears bleed? "I Never faked the Big O," she said. Which, for those who have not played the game, means she has. Why Kris, why?

Sensing the ickiness, Khloe says that neither Kylie nor Kendall don't even know what the Big O means. Yeah right. I am sure they are well aware of that and a lot more. Their big sister did launch her career with a sex tape.

I don't know why I am so shocked by all of this though. I actually like Kris and her camera-ready clan. But this woman has continually proven she will do just about anything for publicity. They live every aspect of their lives in front of the cameras -- every date, every fight, every heartbreak. But there are some things even diehard fans just don't want to hear and this was definitely it.

What do you think of Kris' confession?
